My experience with Amiodarone was similar to yours. My AF isn't permanent and haven't had ablation until now. Amiodarone is for short term use, because a long term use is most likely to cause damage not only for thyroid gland but for other organs as well.

Thank you for this. Started amio 2 weeks ago. My loading dose was 400mg for 10 days and then 200 mg with low dose metoprolol. Low or very low doses are considered relatively safe, but follow up tests needed. Hoping to go to 100 mg as I also await ablation soon. In these 2 weeks some little extra fatigue, afib or flutter much less now as it kicks in

Hi~ I have heart failure and afib. Two years ago I was on amiodarone before my scheduled ablation. I did not have any side effects at all. The ablation was successful for two years for which I am grateful. However my heart went wobbly again in November and I am back on amiodarone again while waiting for a 2nd ablation. I am hopeful that it will be a long term solution as I know that the 2nd ablation has a much higher success rate. I hope your worked! It's always a fine balance with medications for sure. take care,

Remember amiodarone stays in your system for months so you need to wait about 6 months to know if an ablation was successful

About 6 weeks I’ve been told by the cardiologists, which ties in with what happened to me last time, I came off the drug and then literally 6 weeks later had a shock.

I have exactly the same as you....persistant AF....2 Cardiovrsions , both successful but returned to AF. Have just been put on Amioderone.....with another Cardioversion booked..Hopefully I will not need the Cardioversion and Amioderone will succeed. My question is - how long exactly did it take for Amioderone to return you to Sinus Rythym? Thank you....John. , , , Sinus Rythym? ,

Hey John The first time only took a few weeks and the second time a bit longer, it can take up to 6 weeks to be fully active, and it takes about 6 weeks for it to leave your system after you stop.

I’ve been on Amiodarone since oct 2021 i had atrial fibrillation which was uncontrolled for too long and led to heart failure 200mg per day

Let your doctor know if your skin turns blue, it was most noticeable on my hands & forearms. It can also raise hell with your eyes. My cardiologist told to make an eye appt as soon as I was put on amiodorane. You should have bloodwork every 3 mos. No one ordered it for me, when I reached 6 mos I asked who was going to write the lab order. As soon as the results came back my cardiologist stopped it immediately. That’s a terrible drug.

Hi I’m about to start with this drug and I’m petrified about taking it due to all the side effects I have been told about, I hope you are now off the drug and you have had your ablation and it’s worked for you.

Hi, I’ve now had the ablation and should be coming off the drug in the next month or so. Try not to worry too much, whilst I’ve been on amiodarone it’s done a good job keeping my heart normal with minimal side effects. Everyone is different but hopefully you will have a similar outcome.

I just started it.. I'm pill averse and didn't want to take it 2 weeks after my ablation because i was having some Afib. I told the nurse I didn't need it. She said you are going to read a lot of bad stuff about it. I said I already did as I just posted a video about it by the KZitem guy called the heart pharmacist on Reddit for Afib. Little did I know I would be prescribed it two days later. She said only for a month and the people who have problems are on it long term. I really trust my EP so I said ok. 400 mg for a week, 200 mg for 3 weeks. 66 M 190 lbs very fit. I take the last 400 mg dose today.

How did your cardioversion go? Did you have any side effects from the drug that affected your lungs?
@cardiomyopathyandme5970

In the end I didn’t require the cardio version as the drug returned me to normal sinus rhythm. I am currently still on 200mg per day as without it I keep suffering Ventricular tachycardia. The plan is to have a VT ablation very soon. I have so far not suffered from any serious side effects whilst taking amiodarone.
