YO I'M HALF THAI AND I'M GONNA TELL YOU RIGHT NOW THAT THE REP IS *IMMACULATE*. Bro you don't even know how fucking stoked I was to see a THAI MAIN CHARACTER IN A SHOW THAT DIDN'T DEPICT THAI CULTURE AS BAR GIRLS AND TOURISM. I relate to Anne so much with her loud, energetic personality and how proud she is to be Thai, and how stubborn she is, AND THE PART ABOUT HER MOM SINGING GOOFY THAI LOVE SONGS, *MY MOM DOES THAT*. Of course I still relate to Marcy in with the interest in things like D&D and she's so ADHD coded too, but with Anne it's just so amazing to see my culture shown so accurately and often. I will proudly admit I was audibly squealing when I saw her in traditional Thai clothes that have names that i don't know how to spell in a language other than Thai. This is the first time I've really seen a character who I can relate to almost fully, flaws and all, it's not often I see characters that look like me either. Matt Braly definitely made me feel seen with this show, and I'm so excited to see where Amphibia goes from here.

Can we take a second to talk about how visually please the pallet of the entire show is though? Amphibia's more earthy tones was one of the things that drew me more towards it rather than the owl house, as every color just feels like it belongs in the same universe- which is probably due to more an emphasis on pastels and dulls, giving a more natural feel compared to the owl house who has brighter- more eye catching colors due to the whole magic/witchy tone of the location.

I have a Disney+ subscription. The fact that The Owl House and Amphibia episodes weren't released on there in a timely manner is exactly why my partner and I pirated every single episode. Pirating meant we could watch it on the same day it came out instead of who knows when (and thanks to The Owl Club and its sister site for Amphibia, in high quality with decent subtitles). Even releasing the episodes a couple hours after they aired would have been alright with us because we're 18, we don't wake up early enough to watch TOH right when it airs and we were off doing our own things on Friday nights when Amphibia would air. Disney could have cultivated so much more direct hype for their properties if they were just smart and listened to what consumers wanted. If their dying TV shows got timely releases on Disney+, they wouldn't appear to be dying. More people would happily pay for Disney+ if they could watch Disney channel shows the same day they aired on cable.

The difference between an episode with not much in it and filler is the ending. A filler episode ends with nothing changing at all, they went to a place to do something but that thing didn't matter so oh well. Notorious filler is in naruto, the various "methods of finding sasuke" episodes are all complete busts, they start with them trying to find a way to track sasuke, and end with that method failing for some reason. Rinse and repeat about 10 times.
@elianna838
3 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY! This is why I love Amphibia and I would say even puts it in the same league as Adventure Time. The majority of Adventure Time episodes are "filler" but you don't even realize that fact because almost every story no matter how seemingly inconsequential actually develops characters and adds to the overall complexity/multifacetedness of that world even if the plot itself isn't driven forward. It's the same in Amphibia. If a show is a sandwich the plot is the bread and butter but the meat and the veg and the delicious sauces are the characters and the world building.

About the show's formula compared to SU: Personally, I think a lot of the filer episodes work much better for Amphibia compared to Steven Universe. I think part of that has to do with the fact Amphibia is not like our world, so time spent not on the plot is still fun because we can explore more of Amphibia, it's culture, and creatures. In SU, anything that was not about the Gems was very similar to our own world. So it's a little harder to establish intrigue with basic human characters compared to Amphibia's outlandish depiction. Not that the human characters in SU were boring, but to me personally most of them were either mediocre, annoying, or merely charming. Granted I found the characters in Amphibia more enjoyable and easy to watch haha, the Gems were very grating to me at times.

To this day Amphibia has never get tedious, and every episode has fullfiled its purpose in the series overall.

The difference between SU and Amphibia is that SU actually had filler episodes. They usually don’t further along the story in any capacity. It’s just Steven livin’ life in town. But with Amphibia, Anne lives in Wartwood so any character episode that involves Anne is used to further cement her relationships in Wartwood. Her relationships in Wartwood are important because we see that her time in Wartwood is a constant reason for caring about the frogs in general and not just the Plantars. Hence her protective nature over them in seasons 2 and 3

@@kelsey1467 It always depends. Star Vs handled filler episodes really well up to Battle for Mewni (after BfM it became a mess, yet not just in fillers but overall). Steven Universe in the other hand has some of the most pointless fillers. A good filler adds to the show's quality. Amphibia is a crazy example where what it seems filler does actually affect the overall story. That doesn't mean Amphibia doesn't have filler (yet the only one i can think of atm is Cracking Mrs. Croaker, and even that episode serves a purpose of presenting Mrs. Croaker as a badass veteral, something that played a role way later. Amphibia season one and two built up 30 different chekov's guns and True Colors fired them all point blank one after the other in ways that subverted expectations while still keeping in character. It was beautifully written imo, especially the tragedy of Marcy. God I hope she's ok.

I desperately wish I grew up with this show. Not because of all the amazing morals, but one in particular: The college episode, and how it ends with the moral "College may not be for everyone." Growing up, I had the goal of College drilled into my head, because everyone kept saying I was so smart, I deserve so much more than this dunghill I live in, yadda yadda. Problem is: When I managed to go to college 2 years after I graduated High School... Well, to say I failed spectacularly would be an understatement. I literally had to leave after the first semester because nobody wanted to make a loan with me and I left with a 0.0 GPA. I ended up not even going to classes beyond the first few days, and holed myself up in my dorm because I was just so damn scared of failure, and it had been so long for me since High School, and a lot had happened to me. So that moral of "Maybe college isn't for everyone", is so impactful for me after the fact, and something I desperately wish I had beforehand. I wouldn't have been so hard on myself and scared of failure, and I wouldn't have been so diehard on going to college as soon as possible.

Very late reply, but you pretty much touched on all the points that I (and many other reactors and KZitem cartoon analysts) love about _Amphibia_. From the deft balance of light-hearted character development to world-shaking events that feel engrossing thanks to the proper buildup, Matt Braly's team deserves so much recognition for pulling this off. My personal favorite aspect, though, is the influence it proudly wears from its predecessor, _Gravity Falls_. While _The Owl House_ does its best to be its own show without relying too heavily on that show's past accolades, _Amphibia_ is willing to proudly embrace the elements that made _Gravity Falls_ a success while forging its own path. The humor and story pacing in particular feel like refined takes from the lessons learned from that show. The episode "Wax Museum" was an amazing love letter to Alex Hirsch and the legacy he helped create. Its really no surprise since Matt Braly was one of that series' greatest directors, with "Northwest Mansion Mystery" being one of his greatest high points. Its also worth mentioning that Braly has also stated one of his favorite parts of working on _Gravity Falls_ was Pacifica's character. Everyone wrote her off as a seemingly stereotypical rich valley girl bully, but her brief character arc showed that, beyond the front she displays, Pacifica was a deeply abused child terrified of what her parents might do if she didn't meet their expectations. Watching her start on a path of overcoming that trauma and connecting with the Pines twins as good friends were some of my favorite moments from the show. Matt loved it so much that he incorporated aspects of Pacifica's character and brief redemption arc into Anne's character and expanded on them. Sure, Anne doesn't come from obscene wealth, but she's also been bullied and manipulated in similar ways by Sasha and Anne and her initial interactions with the world of Amphibia was one of disgust and frustration (much like early Pacifica). However, both actively work to overcome their flaws, fight for those they hold dear, and actively strive to be better versions of themselves that they can look in the mirror and be happy with what the person they see. Then again, my Dipper X Pacifica bias might be coloring my view on that. And Matt only add more fuel with that Caesar cipher in "Wax Museum." Afmzfcfzx 4 ivcb!
