I run 90:1 in my 1972 Homelite chainsaw and it works GREAT. Fires right up, idles like butter, and when I rip it up to make a cut it has plenty of power even with a 2" longer bar than stock on it (running at 18", came factory with a 16"). The fuel I use is 91 octane ethanol free. I've noticed improvement with all my 2stroke stuff since I made the switch. Used to use Castor 927 but now I'm a die hard AMSOIL fan. Next season I'll try mixes of 85:1 and 80:1 and see if I notice any differences. I figure if AMSOIL claims it'll safely do 100:1, the 90:1 that I do is plenty good as far as longevity.

Started 50:1 Saber on new MS261 yesterday. Stihl Ultra went on the shelf. Bought a first new MS261 two weeks ago and returned it the next day. Cold engine, off the shelf, dealer started and ran about 10 seconds then W.O.T. for 20 seconds to milk some bar oil out. Two Stihl support guys said to return the saw or get another and don't let the dealer rev it up. Stihl did allow me to take off the muffler for a flashlight inspection. Your piston here looks better. The new piston has a solid, tan band above the top piston ring. Brake and carb cleaner on q-tip would not remove any of it at all. Third (follow up from Stihl) contact was a guy from Virginia Beach directly who said the full throttle for that length of time, without load, was okey dokey. I don't think so. Talking a bit more, I believe he's from the one of two schools that say fire up that new engine and cut wood at full throttle. I keep things a long time and want the engine clean with as little wear as possible. The V.B. guy says that the factory runs them up and down. I suggested that I doubt their protocol includes 20 second or more runs at full throttle. Should just ramp up and down to help wear in the rings and other moving parts.

I run Saber at 80:1 in most my saws. I was very skeptical at first but I completely trust it now. Actually it's brought a few saws that I felt were nearing the end of their useful life back from the dead. After a few tanks of Saber I noticed a significant power increase and just a better running saw. You will notice the saw runs richer and needs to be leaned out a little bit. I've seen this happen at least 3 times now...proof enough for me that Saber is an excellent lubricant and the fact that it's almost completely ashless leaves you with a very clean engine. The amsoil has great film strength, as the saws are staying together, and the piston is clean at that ratio, but if you run at regular ratio's, the piston crown will have a fair amount of ash on it. Amsoil says that their oil builds a lot of ash in higher concentrations. Once you get a new saw, it will be interesting to see how the oils perform.
@em4703

Any synthetic oil does just fine at 80:1 or 100:1 even. For piston lubrication only, IF carb is tuned right. The problem is that even a bit lean on the mixture and you're putting serious oil starvation to the engine. The other issue is the crank bearings, which don't care about oil quality, only oil volume. It's just the nature of rolling friction. Amsoil was sued multiple times for blown bearings and them refusing to follow in with their warranty.
