These videos are so fun to watch! I work at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, so completely understand your review at the end. Amsterdam really suffers from mass tourism sadly. But thankfully it hasn’t been as bad, as the years before COVID. I live in the city of Haarlem. Which is 15-20 minutes west of Amsterdam, by train. Think of an older, smaller and more quiet sister of Amsterdam. Happy to work in Amsterdam, but glad when I’m taking the train back home.

We appreciate you watching and reaching out, Michael 🥰 I feel like it would be amazing to live in a smaller city near Amsterdam. That’s kind of how we feel about London as well. It’s nice to live in a smaller village to come back to. We didn’t make time to go inside the Rijksmuseum sadly, but the grounds were stunning. What is it like to work there? If you don’t mind me asking. Hope you’re enjoying the weekend. 👨❤️💋👨

@@RockyandKimball you’re welcome guys! It sure has some benefits, living in a quiet city close to the beach and a national park. While at the same time living almost next door to a big city like Amsterdam. Working in the Rijksmuseum often feels a bit like working in a theme park, because it can get really crowded in there. But during the off season, it’s a remarkable museum. Showcasing the finest Dutch art & history, from the Middle Ages up until the present day. So you’ll find Vermeer, Frans Hals, Rembrandt & Van Gogh in there. Alongside the history of our country. I hope you guys enjoyed the weekend too! I sure had a blast at work. 😉

It's been fun seeing you guys exploring and commenting about a city in which I work but don't live. Yes, it's very expensive except for those savvy enough to have bought their homes back before the economic boost. BTW, 'brood' is pronounced [br-oh-duh] ... 'o' like in 'oh my God'...hahaha. Glad you enjoyed everything there and have been exploring areas I've never even been in, myself. I especially loved your kitty shots, such as the yellow-striped tabby with the big green eyes. I have a chocolate brown British Shorthair, and they're lovely, good-natured cats. But I basically just work and then leave Amsterdam ASAP because of it being way too touristy for me. I was surprised, though, that you hadn't visited any of our famous museums, such as the Van Gogh museum which I think you'd have especially enjoyed. When in Utrecht be sure to check out our train museum, the Spoorwegmuseum. You can take a short train ride from Utrecht station to the museum's door steps. It's amazingly fun to explore. Not only are there trains from way back when like the Orient Express, but also a fun amusement ride, an antiquey photo booth, train souvenir shop and food café.

I think you will like Utrecht a little better, less tourists / crowded compared to A'dam. But still very bussy and bustling. Do you only visit cities/towns or also nature stuff? Like the hunebedden/dolmen in Drenthe? That's prehistoric Netherlands history. But maybe stuff like that needs a little bit more planning, and extra time shedualing for if things go off the rails. I remember me trying to check off things I wanted to have seen/been before my 30th b-day in the NL, and not being able to complete all on the list - even with the NL being not that large. And my home country. Things took longer as planned, or where harder to get to than thought.

In all honestly, the main purpose behind our travels to various cities is that we’re trying to see as many places as possible to help inform where we’d eventually love to relocate. We spent 40 years in the US and we were ready to go somewhere new that could feel like home. The Netherlands was stunning and there are still so many places we’d love to visit. I love Nature, Kimball is okay with it. We used to live in Portland Oregon and would do hikes a lot. But during our travels were pretty focused on the cities for now. Once we start making content in England, where we live, we’ll be sharing some of the natural areas of beauty around us as well. 👨❤️💋👨 Are you still working on your list of areas you wanted to see?
@schiffelers3944
5 ай бұрын
@@RockyandKimball Portland Oregon, I think if that felt like home; mountains, forests, rivers, etc. The NL will not fit that bill. Places in Germany might, or Scandinavian places. What type of climate are you looking for. But what are you looking for? For me to move to a different country, there had to be better laws and social protections and better weather/climate, and or freedoms so I would feel the need to move. For my own safety and wellbeing. That list is basically shelved, but there definately are places I would like to see and experience personally. Like: Petra, Gobekli Tepe, Neuschwanstein, etc. But I would also die in peace if I hadn't. I'm not that much of a vacation type person. I feel rooted and am a home-body. Maybe camper-life (tourbus) would suit me, lol. A home on the move. My partners sister, her husband and kids, live in Sweden. There are aspects I think I would find facinating to experience, Midsomar, Northernlights, or just winter and the lack of sunlight and the twilight day's. The winters are too cold, I am like Pablo the penguin that hated the cold. And in the spring and summer there are a lot of mosquitos, I am allergic for them - I swell up like crazy... but I also attract them more than others. And I smoke, smoking has a lot of rules and issues in Sweden. So, I bow out, no thank you. I think I'm also more like Kimball, sensitive and don't like too much people around me. Simple example: I went to a concert, all was fine until it was over and everybody started to move at the same time.... Before I was at the car, I had a severe migraine and was vomiting. But then I also still had to drive me and my ex-husband home. Not fun. So a "fun" night out, ended with an acid after taste. Have too many of these and a fun night out, is not that fun. Similar with group rides/shows in parks, for me it is better to be at the back at the group being herded like lambs to the slaughter and moved simultaniously in the similar direction. The way you get squeezed together, I'm not a big fan of. Stunt show, everybody drips in, but when it's over it's a tsunami of people at the same time. So it's not fully the size of the group that is the issue, it's more about the group herding behavior that takes place at moments. Big tourist places, crowded places etc. I avoid preferably. I've seen and been places - but in the end, no place like home. The only place that has felt more like home than home was Mont Serrat in Spain but also very specific that location, not so much other places in Spain, Park Gaudi nice but didn't feel like "home" if you understand what I am trying to say.
@RockyandKimball
5 ай бұрын
That totally makes sense. I’m rather extroverted and even I avoid group events. Though over the years I’ve grown more of a home body and just want to be with Kimball all the time. Even when I leave for work I feel sad. He always waves at me through our kitchen window, lol. As far as where we’ll relocate, we’re open. It doesn’t need to be mountainous. I grew up and lived with mountains for years but I’m okay without. I live in England now which is about as flat as you can get. Only time will tell where this road takes us. Wishing you a very happy St. Paddy’s day.

Yeah hotels can get pricy. I like the Ibis Styles brand of hotels and in Amsterdam a room would be around 100 euro for 2 people which is "ok" I guess for a large and popular Western Europe city. Other than that, you can make it as cheap as you want. The classic Albert Heijn supermarket branches are everywhere in the city and prices there are reasonable, its where locals do their everyday shopping. If you want to buy real dutch cheese of good quality, just get it there. Locals eat it all the time so no need to go to an overpriced touristy cheese shop. Also they sell pretty decent ready-made salads for a quick and cheap dinner. And for meals, a Turkish style Doner sandwich is pretty popular should cost about 5-6 euro and really is a full meal in itself. Also very unique and flavourful are the many Surinamese restautants throughout the city. There is a large community of people from there in the city since obviously the country was a colony of The Netherlands untill relatively recently. Its a very interesting cuisine with influences from South America, Creole, Indonesian, Chinese and even Hindu foods. You should be able to get a good meal at a local place for around 10 euro's. Also Chinese food in Chinatown isnt expensive. Usually youll even get free tea with your meal so no need to order drinks so for 10-15 euro's you are all set. And some tips for budget friendly actvities: Take the ferries behind the Central Station, they are free. An interesting one goes to the NDSM wharf in the northern part of the city. Its a former industrial area where local artists now rent work spaces in the large abandoned warehouses, and you can just walk in and check out all their stuff. Also free of course is the main branch of the public library, the OBA, not far from Central Station either. Its an interesting buidling to just hang out and chill, but the best part is the outdoor viewing platform on the top floor that directly overlooks the old town. Some of the best views youll get for free! And in general, just take the time to walk 5-10 minutes outside of the touristy canal area and youll find shops and restaurants that cater to residents, so lower prices and better quality there in general. Plus the chance to meet some locals, so if you want to have after dinner drinks, go to De Pijp area or Oud West and just walk into a bar that looks nice, unless you just want to hang out with other tourists... hehe.

Don't drive up to the center of Amsterdam! Traffic is crazy and way too busy; parking is crazy expensive and almost non-existent or distant. Better park your car on the very edge of the city and do the last part by tram or bus. Amsterdam is always crowded but excessively crowded in summer and end of year. EVERYBODY visits Amsterdam ( and I understand.. it is a world on its own ) and some tourists have zero responsibility and/or don't give a flying f**k about keeping stuff clean and tidy. The decent rule is: You bring stuff or buy stuff - take your trash with you until you can dispose of it in the dedicated bin.

@@RockyandKimball woops, didn't think you'd be interested in Noord Brabant, so yeah Eindhoven is the town I was born, a long time ago. Then and even now it is seen as a backwater, probably due to the nearness of Belgium. See, it is far easier to go there instead of A'dam. Antwerp is about an hour away and Amsterdam takes as much time spent for Brussels. And those are far more interesting places than Amsterdam. Second thing, Eindhoven has a Technical Uni aswel as a top notch design environment DAE designacademy Eindhoven (add nl after designacademy and you got their page). Thus there was no need to move for further education. As for industrial development, there are a few options there, ASML is nearest to me, as is part of the research for Philips electronics. Then there are a few medical companies in Oss and Best. Of course one other thing has be mentioned KMA is located in Breda (think West Point in the USA). It has gotten worse due to 'statiegeld' on cans and small bottles. The city should just make special garbage cans where you can throw them in. So either the money goes to charity or the poor, homeless and junkies do not throw all the rest of the garbage on the ground while searching for some cans and bottles.

That’s a great idea. They could actually have waste bins totally designated for all drinks which also include coffee cups and lids as well. Noooo American Husbands, you missed the most important monument in the entire world 😢 Do you know where "our" pink triangle 🔺️ comes from. Many, mostly german gay people, ended up in one of the destruction camps. Like the jews had to wear the star of David, the homosexuals had to wear pink triangles on their "clothes" (striped pyjama's). Even under their fellow prisoners, they were considered as the lowest of the lowest. They had to do the hardest forced labor, and only a handful came back after the war. Nowadays, it stands for more "The Homomonument: An icon of remembrance". It was the first gay monument in the world. The monument goes beyond commemorating just the victims of World War II. It also commemorates all LGBTI people who have been or are still being persecuted by government regimes. This world-renowned icon takes the shape of a triangle on the bank of the canal". I visited Auschwitz a few years back and there it was. A sing with all the different prisoners symbols. One of them was the pink triangle.

Love meeting people from the areas we visit as well, so they can keep us in check 🤣 I could totally see the tourist thing being an issue when things like this pop up. Kimball and I kept having conversations about what it must be like for the locals and it was a bit hard to imagine as we’ve never been in that kind of situation before. But such a cool city.❤️ Have a great week and hope to chat again soon! Stick around for more fun 👨❤️💋👨
