The 'kroket' (croquette) is a deep fried roll with meat ragout inside, covered in breadcrumbs. The original Dutch croquette is made from beef or veal, but there are many different flavors like chicken satay, shrimps, goulash or even a vegetarian version.

THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED: For the meat: liquid cooking butter approx. 400 g soup meat 1 bay leaf 1 onion, coarsely chopped pepper and salt thyme cloves 1 stock cube dash of red wine 1 tomato, cut into quarters For the filling: 700 ml water with 1 beef stock cube 1 onion, very finely chopped 160 g butter 160g flour plus extra for breading fresh lovage and parsley, both finely chopped spices: thyme, nutmeg, cloves, roasting and grilling spices, mace, pepper, salt For breading: 3 eggs flower 1 pack of Panko (coarse Japanese breadcrumbs, available in large supermarkets) This recipe is for 20-22 croquettes. HOW TO PROCEED: Place a generous dash of liquid butter in a sturdy frying pan. Then fry a nice piece of soup meat until brown on all sides. Add the remaining ingredients, bring to the boil and then reduce the heat to as low as possible (use a flame diffuser if you have one). Let the meat stew quietly for four hours. Turn the meat occasionally. Remove the meat from the pan and let it cool slightly. Then cut it as finely as possible. You can also use other beef or leftover rib steak or steak. STEP 2 Make a stock from 700 milliliters of boiling water and a beef stock cube. Melt the butter in a pan, but do not let it brown. Add the onion and fry briefly until translucent. Reduce the heat. Add all the flour at once and stir with a wooden spatula to form a paste. Keep the heat low. Keep stirring and let the flour cook for a few minutes. Then start adding the stock. In the beginning, a little liquid is added; keep stirring until you get a smooth paste, there should be no lumps. As more liquid is added, more liquid can be added. However, wait each time until the liquid has been completely absorbed and has simmered. STEP 3 Stir the finely chopped meat into the thick sauce. Also add the finely chopped herbs and spices to taste. Now it's important to taste! Add more herbs and spices to taste. STEP 4 Now let the mixture cool completely. Spread it over a baking tray and put it in the freezer for half an hour. Don't let it freeze completely, but let it get really cold. Then you can roll it better later. STEP 5 Prepare two deep plates: one with flour and one with beaten egg (add a little salt to this to make it easier). Also prepare a deep container (for example an oven dish) with the breadcrumbs and a wooden board for rolling. Remove the ragout from the freezer just before processing. Using your hands, form the mixture into balls of approximately 4 centimeters in diameter. Roll these out into sticks on a floured wooden board. STEP 6 Now bread the croquettes. Dip the sticks first in the flour, then in the egg and finally in the breadcrumbs. This is really a job for two people: one rolls, the other breads. Make sure that the croquettes are completely breaded, so that there are no cracks in the crust during frying. FINAL RESULT The croquettes are now ready. You can fry them immediately or store them in the freezer. Then take them out of the freezer two hours before baking and let them thaw slowly. Very tasty with coarse mustard and a slice of white bread.

If you want actual spicy, go to an Indonesian restaurant in the Netherlands and order any of their curries. Vindaloo is probably one of the best in that regard, genuinely spicy As someone who's Dutch but has Indonesian heritage it sucks how hard it is to find good spicy food here so I usually just make stuff myself. McDonald's had a Tabasco Burger a few years ago that was really good but sadly they took it out of the rotation

If you don't take out & they forget something or mix your order up with someone else's they usually come by your table & give you the ordered item & you get to eat the mixed up stuff too because they can't serve it to someone else anyway. But honestly, you're better off eating somewhere else. It tastes so much better at local restaurants that aren't massive chain franchises that only truly care about yearly profits increases.

After all your Amsterdam video's food tastings, comparing to US, the general what I notice: More flavour, less oil, less sugar, smaller sizes, less processed, less artificial, better bread..... Check out (google) ingeedients of the fries of McDonalds in USA vs the ingredients of the same fries in Europe: USA 14 ingredients vs Europe 4 ingredients.... Notably absent from the EU fries is methylpolysiloxane, a commonly used anti-foaming agent that's also an ingredient used to make Silly Putty....... And thats just the fries as an example.....Also bread differences are huge! It may sound odd, but in America, your loaf of bread can contain ingredients with industrial applications - additives that also appear in things like yoga mats, pesticides, hair straighteners, explosives and petroleum products. So many USA products are illegal to sell here in Europe because of better restrictions here: In US the mighty dollar is more important than health.... Also in Europe eating at a fastfood restaurant is considered a "bonus" while in USA for more people its considered as a daily routine...
