You just made my day ! I could never remember what amstrad model I had . It takes me back to a 13 yr old in early eighties. I can even close my eyes and still smell the plasticky stink off the turntable when it finally came out

I guess realistically Amstrad expected these things to last customers 5 years tops, like most low cost budget audio systems of the time. Great video yet again my friend.

I have the single deck version in storage. I picked mine up off the street next to a bin about 20 years ago! It had a blown transistor in the amplifier and, like all those Tanashin mechanisms, the wow and flutter was pretty bad. I have found that unless the pinch roller is tip-top condition, it will struggle to get through a tape. I plan to get round to restoring it one day, this video has certainly jogged my memory! Incidentally, the single deck one has manual level control and a crude LED array VU meter.

I had one of these when they were new, I remember my dad repairing both tape decks when they were fairly new, and the chrome strip by the function selectors was lifting up and the turntable draw used to get stuck. The unit was like that from new, so it's not an age thing. I was up in my parents loft a few months back and the box is still up there.

The extensive use of cheap plastic parts and cardboard backed speakers made all these amstrad units a laughing stock in the 80s, especially when you had similar priced pioneer and technics units that were twice the quality and twice the power

Thank you for your informative video. I remember back in 1984, a young lady I cared about had on of these and played the Frankie Goes To Hollywood double LP on it... Annette of Crowthorne and Manchester you are missed, hope you are well and happy.

Love your video's take's me back in time..I agree with your comments on the Amstrad shame they never spent a little more money on them it was all a cheap fix ....Although when they worked they were not awful ..There clone VHS /VCR was pretty indestructible . The original speakers were all for the look and not the sound.But put a good set on and they did not sound bad...Great video's thank you for sending.

Many thanks. The same's true of today's Crapophones, I always wonder why they don't put a little more effort in, and have a really good product. As you rightly say, an Amstrad on decent speakers didn't sound bad. Funny thing was the first ones did have decent speakers, I've an early pair from the very early 80's on my TS33 MK2 in m kitchen, and it sounds MUCH different to the shallow originals.

Yes earlier model's were better .I found that the newer the cheaper .They tended to use more plastic .One thing that did annoy me was keeping trim together with staples rather than screws,plastic to cheap chip board .Funny thinking about it the same was true with early sofa's .Thanks for the reply and good luck with your future repairs...

When i first took over my grandparent loft as a play room years ago this stereo and an Alba one were up there... this one was my mum's when she lived with her parents and she seemed happy with it, but at that time my grandpa said lets take this one to the tip and its speakers. Looking back now it probably wouldn't have needed as much work as this one did and i do regret taking it to the tip... so i bought this one. sadly its original speakers are only a 5" 5watt standard woofer... not even long throw. and some plastic trims on the front of the speaker to resemble tweeters, but alas that's all they were... just trims. They were badly chipped on the corners.. being chipboard they broke, i knew at the time of purchase they were damaged as it showed it on the ebay listing but for £20 or it might have been £30 i thought i would get this one to see what it was like... but sadly it needed a good service and i simply didn't have the time patience or experience doing all these modifications. my forte is more on building and modifying speakers. Nice to see this old crock saved and brought back to life, and glad you can give it a home where it should hopefully see some use.

I had one of those for about 5 minutes around 1987. I bought it for £20 from Dixon's. The best thing was the LED VU indicators. If I remember correctly, I would adjust the speed of the record deck via the trim-pots on the PCB underneath the record deck. I eventually hooked a CD player to it via the record deck pcb as it was connected via Phono plugs as there was no line ins.

My grandparents had this in the 80s, it was good and loud but the tape heads demagnetised and wouldn't record. Looking back it was a gimmick but I'm still curious about it👍❤️😎

The switch for chrome and metal tapes was for playback only. Despite that proudly displayed "/|/|etal" badge, it wasn't that capable sadly! It was just their approximation of the slightly familiar metal tape logo that appeared on other equipment: images.45spaces.com/f/aud/jvc-metal-5-aud.jpg I too had trouble with the speed selector on the BSR 275 record deck. The Tetrad cartridge was unreliable and would crackle on one channel when the stylus cantilever was pressed or otherwise moved. Such an enormous downfall for a once respected deck manufacturer.

I have the ts88 tower system. My record player is doing the same thing. I would replace it but I want a deck that will fit . I do like the original but the speed is unreliable. Is it just a motor from an old record player with a switch? I take it you had to drill out a piece to fit the new switch.
@riverhuntingdon6659

Hello there, about your TS 88. I suspect the same system for the motor's in there, and yes, what I did was to use a motor from a scrapped 33/45 only record deck.The motor runs on a 12V dc supply. I didn't need to drill anything out on this one, the hole left when the original lever was removed along with its wonky control board meant the 3 - position switch just went in. I've wired it so it's still "right" according to the lettering on top, 33/OFF/45. Hope this helps, sorry to be late replying, it won't always let me !

Panasonic had a portable music centre with slide out deck - SG-J500 (not particularly good quality). JVC also had a system with slide out deck, model DC-7, much higher quality. Sony, Pioneer, and AIWA - also made turntables with slide-out mechanisms. All were sold around about mid-eighties. Sony PS-FL77 is a good example.

Open the unit at the back...bottom half panel.. there you can then push the turntable drawer out slightly and you should be able to see the motor under ther drawer. The rubber belt that goes round it will have perished but if it still spins when you press the open / close button it should just be a case of replacing the rubber band / belt. It goes from the drawer motor around the main cog that moves the drawer. Sorry dont know the sizes as I've not had mine out the attic in 20 years.
