America's rail system gets a lot of flak, most of it deserved. But the Acela Express is actually fantastic for what it does. It's one of Amtrak's most popular services, runs at a great profit and passenger load numbers, and gives domestic airlines on the East coast a serious run for their money. It's a shame that the line hasn't been completely overhauled and upgraded, since the Northeast Corridor is perfectly suited for High Speed Rail operations: many cities with large populations within hours of each other.

I live in Australia, large area with many State Governments much like the U.S. Very difficult to get a national approach to a high speed rail network to cover such vast distances. European countries, Japan and the UK isles are much smaller areas and therefor much easier to achieve what we long to have. Still, we do well with what we have :) Cheers.

1:34 for a solid 5 seconds, i thought that was a MARC I dont know why the hell do people constantly complain about Acela. it makes no sense. the line it runs on has a lot of sharp turns, what the hell would you expect? The US has a lot of space between its cities, as such it is more efficient to use aircraft or a vehicle that does not require so much infrastructure. European nations are small, so planes would be out of the question. Same goes for many asian nations. Population density is high, and as a result, trains are most efficient. but in sparsely populated nations, like Canada or the US, trains arent as efficient. The reason we dont have high speed travel in other states is that the rail lines that exist out there are owned by private freight lines. High speed rail would not benefit them, so they wont upgrade the tracks. They do what they want witthe tracks, Amtrak just has to go with it. Take this into consideration next time you watch a video of US rail lines.

They badly need to expand Acela lines to nationwide services. Or at least between certain cities. Like I’d love to have a Midwest corridor. Milwaukee, Chicago, St.Louis, Cincinnati, Louisville, Indianapolis, Columbus, Cleveland, Detroit, and finally Pittsburgh with connecting lines through Pennsylvania and New York to the north east corridor. Definitely encourage more travel between cities on day trips or smaller trips.

+Vaas Montenegro The Acela is just as fast as most high speed express trains in Europe, its top speed is 150mph, which is 241kph. Soon the speed limit will be raised to 165mph, or 265kph. Yes there are quite a few trains in Europe and Aisa that are faster, but the majority are the same speed as this. And it isn't really that much slower than the latest and greatest high speed trains that aren't a maglev. I think they travel at about 320kph/198mph. Its only a 35mph difference, and it gets the job done. That's the thing, everyone wants the US to build a "real" high speed train, but what it has does the job fine.

The fact that this train is shorter than more common European or Japanese models (TGV, ICE, Shinkansen, anyone?) doesn't make it look faster. But the Acela is very slow anyway. I hope that someday the United States will develeop better infrastructure than it has now. I am from the Netherlands myself, and I absolutely love trains. Seeing them arrive on their stations, depart with grace and rush through the countryside at their top speeds is truly amazing to watch. It just shows that trains simply do not belong in museums. They belong on the tracks, where they perform their duties. However, as we all know, the United States has a poorly maintained infrastructure when it comes to their tracks and trains. Amtrak owns only a very small portion of all the track it operates on, meaning the owners of the non-Amtrak rails will naturally lend the priorities to their freight trains. Whenever there is a freight train approaching, Amtrak train operators are told to park their trains in sidings, while the 2-kilometer long freight train passes by at the slowest possible speed. Normally, these non-Amtrak tracks are not powered by overhead electricity either, which means they are forced to utilize diesel engines for their passenger trains on those tracks, just like the freight companies that actually own the track. For this reason, high-speed rail travel across the US, even by diesel trains, is impossible on the track they do not own. The reason why the Acela is so slow on the Amtrak-owned track is because the track isn't upgraded. However, they are working on gradually upgrading the track they do own, which would eventually result in the trains being able to run at their top speeds. Avelia Liberty will have to wait, because upgrading the tracks is the first step to take. Without this crucial step, even the new Avelia Liberty would still only be chugging along at less than 125 miles per hour, just like the Acela Express. They could go faster on European tracks, but they don't, since the track is poorly maintained. How badly I wish the United States would be getting a good network of trains across the entire country... (Sorry if my English was bad) -Jack
@tibbers3755
6 жыл бұрын
Jack DvR we need to straighten the line more, the bends and turns keeps them slow. But since that would mean taking property from people, it would be much more complicated. I wish it was easy to do this, but since amtrak is govt owned, anything for it to upgrade would have to be fought over in the senate

With my experiences on fast trains in the UK and France, at first I thought the US-xpress was not going that fast till 406 and 416, yep, that sucker definitely is hammering down in the 140 plus mphs. Mint captures.

Can you come to Long Island to film the Long Island railroad,also, the New York and Atlantic railroad for freight

150mph is actually damn impressive for hundreds of year old lines travelling on some of the busiest corridors in the world with mixes of commuter, freight, and Acela, and without their own dedicated right of way. That being said Acela ordered new Alstom Aveila Liberty trains that starting in 2021 will lean into turns and are going to be able to go 220mph on these same old congested lines.
@Sedna063

220 mph? That would be 350 on old tracks. I don't have to tell you how hazardous this is, do I? HSR needs a fixed underground made from concrete slaps. It should run on dedicated tracks to avoid collisions. It needs a new type of signalling because older light - based signals are not cutting it for HSR. They need special electric cables and they need more space between the tracks and in tunnels. It would be ludicrous to think that you will be able to ride 220 mph on the same old network.

Impressive shots, Mike! Acela trainsets surely do look and sound amazing. If only the NEC could be improved and new high speed lines built so these monsters could show what they could really do!
@davidfreeman3083

Exactly. The top speed is already not bad. Anything above 125 mph is remarkable, not to say the top would increase to 160-165 mph. That's not that significant a difference than 180-200 mph from my opinions, especially given that NEC is literally town after town. The problem is we need to make sure that such high speeds is reached at most of the length. Right now there's only about 30 mi of 150 mph lines in MA/RI, and about the same length in NJ for 160 mph next year. We need literally all 500 miles of track and even some branches (like Springfield, Empire, Keystone and VA ones) to be reaching that standard. That would be impressive and world class.

Mike - Another fine video. I've seen other videos of the Acela with even with one or two produced by Amtrak. It wasn't until I saw this one of yours that I really noticed Acela's unique sound as it sprints by. Thanks for posting it. Art

Hey dude lots of love to American rail fans from India.I am also a rail fan.I want to say that please be safe while the sexy beast 😍😘 on the track bcs of it's high speed it can pull u towards bcs a low pressure system is developed when the train at high speed running out of platform . And also there is a high risk while clicking a camera flash near high tension overhead wires .Bcs some times it can give a spark through the flash and can hit the photographer too. I'm not warning u but be safe bro we want some more vids from u 😎😎🤗😘🇮🇳🇮🇳🇺🇸🇺🇸

I was planning on filming at North Elizabeth on the NEC today, which would've been the first time I'd ever seen an Acela in person. Unfortunately, my father and I didn't have time-if we'd gone, we'd have only been able to stay for about 20 minutes. Another day...

The Acela trains only have six passenger cars between two power cars.... why so short? One would expect 10 or 12 cars.
@marc21091
7 жыл бұрын
The Alstom-built TGVs in France have 8 articulated cars between two power cars, often double-decked ('Duplex'). However the Acela trains are much heavier - the cars are not articulated and their have to be more heavily-built for use at high-speed on a mixed-traffic railway where freights also operate. So they are not as fast or as energy-efficient as the TGV from which they are derived.

marc21091 Actually, you don't see freight trains often on the railroad because Amtrak and not somebody else own the railroad.
