Why are the trains going slow? Ig cause of the fog or something

No, because they're crossing over up ahead, so 45 mph speed restriction for the switches.

Why do the Amtrak locos have both pantographs up but not the NJTransit locos? Is it because of speed?
@cehayes74

No Amtrak does that to keep the Ice off the wires, more like a Ice Scrapper 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 !!!

It really depends on the equipment used by the train I think. It seems that Amtrak trains like the Northeast Regional or the Keystone Service, hauled by a single Siemens ACS-64 usually only have 1 pantograph on top of the locomotive up. Meanwhile the Acela Express with its 2 power cars on its both ends in a push/pull configuration have 2 pantographs up, 1 per power car. The NJ Transit trains hauled by a ALP-46 seem to also have just 1 pantograph up. It's the Arrow IIIs which are electric multiple units that usually have multiple pantographs up. kzitem.info/news/bejne/u6WYwIitj5dorII I shot my video the day after the snow on the corridor. Feel free to check and see how many pantographs are up on the trains.

I suppose, it is because of high speed of Amtrak trains. Current collection becomes more difficult at high speeds with clean contact wire. And it will be more difficult with contact wire, coated with thin ice. Also, ice will cause heavy arcing between contact wire and pantograph's contact shoe, which wears both. So, in order to maintain good and maximum arcing-free current collection, both pantographs are raised. PRR had a "Double pantograph order" for such weather conditions. Also, local tracks are used more intensive during a day, than express tracks - that's prevents from ice buildup at local track's contact wire.

^ Just the design of the new “City Sprinter” Amtrak electric locomotives. They’re fairly new, only having first appeared a few years ago. Before them, the AEM-7 electric locos or “toasters” as they were referred to as, had only one pantograph reaching up to take power from the overhead catenary wires.
@AlexsMemeDump

The lead pantograph is dead, but is up in order to clear ice and snow buildup from the wire so that the trailing pantograph has less chance of arcing or losing power. It is an Amtrak-specific operation procedure. I guess NJ transit does not have this SOP.

Is the Northeast Corridor Line the only one that provides light rail? Because every light rail I see coming in and out of Newark Penn is bound for Trenton.
@rominn2184
2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you have it quite correct. The NJT Light Rail is an entirely different system. It’s like a trolley or streetcar, and only serves urban areas in New Jersey like Newark. Or you have the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail in Hoboken, Bayonne, etc.

Yes. Of course. On the Northeast Corridor Line, it’s the only way the trains receive power from the overhead catenary wires which are highly electrified.

Amtrak runs lead pantographs up (not drawing power) in icy conditions so that the lead can scrape the ice off the wire and give the trailing a better power connection

And can someone please explain why all these trains have such small narrow windows?
@Shuotography
2 жыл бұрын
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amfleet#Design As far as Amtrak's Amfleet coaches are concerned, I think their design was meant to emulate the aesthetics of airliners as well as to make the windows somewhat less susceptible to damage in case they were hit by debris.
@rominn2184
2 жыл бұрын
^ That’s just the design. Ask the people at Kawasaki or Bombardier or whoever designed these cars when they came out in the 1970’s. The double-decker cars are newer, but you have to have slightly smaller windows in order to accommodate a bi-level train. And it just looks smaller cause you’re viewing the cars from somewhat of a distance but inside the cars looking out, the view is just fine. Now, if they would WASH the cars from time to time…but that’s a different story.
@Space_and_weather

The windows aren't that small, once you get into the train and sit down it allows for enough viewing space.
@TyrellGordon

I can’t speak on Amtrak windows but the double decker NJ transit windows aren’t as small as you think.

As I said on the other video. My guess for both pantographs being up is for more power output since ice accumulation on catenary cause power to not be as great as it would be in normal conditions. At least that's my guess anyways lol.

Simple answer Jersey Ave was never upgraded and the there is no to do so. It's a park and ride station with nothing else around it. I'm guessing Jersey Ave will be eliminated if North Brunswick gets built. All NJ Transit trains have the capacity to board both low and high platforms.
@rominn2184
2 жыл бұрын
^ Because it’s very infrequently served (I think they should consider just closing it) and it’s just been neglected. There’s literally nothing around the station, nothing to walk to and no stores or businesses around. You can’t reach it without a car and it’s literally just a parking lot. It’s fairly useless. Then again, if it were closed, it wouldn’t be such a great place for railfanning!!
