Today we’re doing a little bit of a throwback. A time when I was still relatively new to railfanning and using older equipment for filming. This was actually a video originally going onto the main channel (and some clips are on there), but I chose to wait and I’m happy I did as more showed up later on!
Although P42s are now the only Amtrak engines that regularly pass through New Mexico, there are instances where other motive power make an appearance.
Throughout 2017 Siemens built the SC-44 chargers for Amtrak intercity routes, and many were put on the Southwest Chief being sent to TTCI in Pueblo, Colorado for testing. We see both Midwest (IDTX) and Cascades (WSDOT) units deadheading on either the Southwest Chief or their own short deadhead consist (Later on they were cut off/added in Albuquerque as opposed to La Junta, CO, possibly due to ABQ being a longer stop).
Fast forward to 2019 and Amtrak begins testing chargers for a long-distance variant, so on two occasions test trains were sent with Midwest chargers. One as a separate train, the other on the Southwest Chief. Both times the lead P42s were isolated while the chargers did all the work.
The most recent appearance of a charger in the state was a unique one, as a California (CDTX) charger was sent to TTCI. We caught it returning west, and even though this was a last minute catch, it was a good one!
Charger numbers in this video:
WSDOT: 1404-1407
IDTX: 4614-4615, 4617-4625
CDTX: 2102
