First of all, quick fix: you need to say should *have* known better, not should *of* known better. _Should of_ is a misunderstanding of "should've." Second, not really the driver's fault. I know this for a fact, because a railroad company re-graded the intersection of a road in a nearby town just recently. They did so despite complaints from community leaders and the road commission as to their timetable. I think their control has something to do with the railroad owning the track plus a set distance to either side. So, my "dumb comment" is quite correct. To those who wonder why all crossings aren't rebuilt so that auto haul trucks specifically can clear them... first, this would cost an ungodly amount of money - for one specific type of truck. Professional drivers wouldn't let themselves get caught in this situation. Carhaulers ride very low and their drivers know this. They know this as a fact. I'm a 30-year veteran truck driver, and that includes auto haul, and there is no way a professional auto hauler would have even attempted to get over that sharp crest. Trailers only bottom out if the drivers puts it there. Trailers only hit low bridges if the driver puts it there. In short, trucks only go wherever the driver puts them - and a low-slung trailer is a hazard the driver is responsible for knowing how to negotiate. Period. Absolutely no sympathy for this idiot who could very well have killed any number of people. My thoughts are with the locomotive crew, seeing that truck looming ahead and knowing this could very well be the end of their lives and there's nothing they can do about it.

This road is a shortcut of about 3 miles, and there are signs at each end that say "Bridge ahead - Load Limit 5 Tons Local traffic only." Many times they would hear semis and there would be a 40 ton truck easing across the bridge. Occasionally, one would back up a mile to a spot where they could turn around. One day there was a large touring bus (25 tons) stopped on the bridge while the passengers took photos of the creek. The reason for the truckers taking this route - to avoid a truck scale on the main road. That indicates THEY KNEW THE TRUCK WAS OVERWEIGHT for even the main highway. They took the risk anyway, proving that there are some really stupid drivers out there on our roads. The overloadings damaged the bridge and it is now blocked off. I had to call dispatch while in Tuscaloosa, Alabama a few years ago. We had a train go into emergency and block almost all of the crossings in the city. One crossing was clear, but the train was still inside the "zone" of the sensors. I called dispatch, told them what was going on. They knew about the train and had a team out already. They sent one of them to the crossing, to verify the crossing was clear, and then overrode the crossbucks. That person stayed at the crossing with the PD until the train came back online, and when it did, he re engaged the crossbucks so the train could back if needed... all from the info on one little sticker!

I've seen videos of cars getting hit by freight trains that stopped just a few seconds later. The driver called 911 instead of going straight to the crossing hotline. The time that the 911 dispatcher took to get through to the train controller could've saved them. In this case though, there was no time to stop. It's also important to use the crossing hotline for non-emergency stuff like gates stuck up or down. 911 doesn't need to hear about that because they can't fix it.
@jovetj
2 жыл бұрын
@@RsRj-qd2cg Impacting a vehicle will slow down a train some, but different trains take longer to stop than others. The main factors are the speed of the train and the weight of the train. Passenger trains, like this one, tend to be faster but lighter. Freight trains can be a mix of empty and loaded wagons, and are heavier. Most trains aim to go as fast as they can on their section of track because time is money. There are several different types of brakes on a train. The main brakes are operated by air pressure from the lead locomotive(s). When the brake line is pressurized, the brakes turn off. The train driver (engineer) can adjust this pressure to engage the brakes as needed based on the terrain and conditions of the track. In an emergency, or if the brake line is severed (such as two train cars separating from each other because of a broken coupler or the like), the brake pressure drops to zero very quickly, and this causes all the brakes on all the wagons to engage as quickly as possible. This alone can cause the train to derail, because it's an uncontrolled braking sequence. While emergency brakes can be engaged at any moment, most train crews will not do so until collision is imminent because of the risk of a possible serious derailment.

The trucking industry is in shambles. Anyone who can stand upright and breathe can get a commercial CDL, and NONE have anything but the minimal training when they "graduate". I watched one guy in a truck stop who had no idea how to slide the rear wheels on his trailer. His comment: "It's my first day..." And then he's gonna go out and do 70 on an expressway?!? WTF......

The GPS might have told the driver to go that way. That happened in Grass Lake several years ago where a driver that was pulling a low boy trailer got stuck at a railroad crossing because of the GPS and a Amtrak train hit the truck with enough force that a Haz-Mat team had to be called in because of the diesel fuel from the truck and the lead engine for the train had to be parked at the Jackson Norfolk Southern yard.

Low boy trailers are scary as fuck to get over a railroad crossing. That’s a sure way to derail a train if you get stuck with one of those. I heard the engineer was injured. I hope that the other 3 who were injured are also okay. As a railroader, this is a scenario that scares the living shit out of me. As for truckers, it’s likely an innocent mistake, which I really feel bad for that poor driver. All that income is gone. But it really bothers me that grade crossings like this are left open for a trucker to accidentally access. I wish there was better signage or something within our GPS maps systems that could notify truckers or motorists of geographically difficult crossings like this one. If you drive over a crossing with a hump that a trailer of any kind could get stuck on, that’s a fatal mistake with fate just begging to happen. And I wouldn’t wish that on anybody.

There are a couple of reasons for people to know that all RR crossings have a number assigned to them and most of them also have the RR Dispatcher emergency phone number posted with the crossing number. Foremost of these is situations like this where the truck got high centered on the tracks and could not get off. However, there is also a FRA rule that prohibits a train crew from leaving their train blocking a crossing, outside of yard limits, for more than 15 minutes. If they can't move off the crossing for an extended period of time, they are supposed to split the train and park the 2 sections of cars 200 feet from either side of the crossing. If you are blocked by a train at a crossing and they have not moved for more than 15 minutes, call that phone number and give the crossing number and how long you have been there. The dispatcher will get them to move or split the train.

Supposed to and doing are two different things. The book, rules, and laws were written by a bunch of desk jockeys who know nothing about how the real world operates. You can call dispatch and say something. No matter how nicely you ask, 99.9% of the time it doesn't work if they are waiting for another movement to clear a siding or for space in a yard. They police can come out and ticket them every fifteen minutes, but chances are that ticket is going to go unpaid. I deal with this several times a week and have grown accustomed to the problem. Norfolk Southern and CSX and I'm sure the other major class 1's aren't going to waste time doing the hokey pokey uncoupling trains, setting hand brakes, recoupling, taking hand brakes off, and doing brake tests if they don't have to.

Absolutely insane how a car trailer can lift up the front end of the locomotive. Eyes got wide when I saw how fast and what railroad it was. Just watched it in slow-mo. It's hard to tell, but one for sure thing is that the locomotive is severely tilted on the ass end on initial impact. That's why an 8 car passenger train going 80MPH can stop in a fraction of the distance that a 100 car freight train going 40MPH can. Yes, all train cars have their own brakes, but those brakes are controlled by the locomotive. Sure my coworkers may get tired of about it, but it's helping me mentally. Although I do sometimes still see the semi spin past my window and see the sparks from us stopping. I know it could have been so much worse. Physically, I wasn't hurt. Mentally, I'm still kinda shaken up from it. But as I said before, talking about it helps me.

How are you "traumatized?" No one even got hurt.🙄 I gotta agree with the other guy. You're angling for a payout.

@@jeremymenchaca Oh, I don't doubt you were on the train. But the amount of trauma you're claiming borders on the comical. You CLEARLY are emphasizing how mentally traumatized you still remain, I.E. "It's still affecting my life." And then saying how "talking to people helps." I.E." I need therapy, (treatment.)" Both of which just HAPPEN to be grounds for a payout. All this, and nothing ACTUALLY this traumatic happened to you. You were unharmed after the train crashed through a semi. I would understand being briefly shaken up, then just having a cool story, but you're over here acting like a Vietnam vet who saw four years of action.🤣🤣🤣🤣😀😀

Wouldn't cost that much to raise up the road a bit to smooth out that crossing but as usual, they do nothing and blame it on the driver.

A passenger on the train said the train was braking harder than normal. I state this because some have blamed the engineer for not braking. I gave a link to a local news report (dfw cbs local) where this passenger was interviewed, but KZitem seemingly removed my comment.

I live just right down the road from here and what happened was, the guy was overweight and was trying to bypass the scales, turned the wrong way and ended up at the train track which there is a sign down there that say no trucks. He got stuck because of how low his trailer was… The truck driver was freaking out because he had a Rottweiler in the semi and plus he is getting his cdl took away… What I mean is when he went the wrong way is down there off the highway he took a right instead of a left, thinking he would end up on 77.

Some commenters are saying the driver was foolish for attempting to cross due to the steepness of the grade. I can't judge that; I don't know enough about long-haul trucking. I do know that I've experienced that feeling of utter helplessness in the face of impending misfortune, and I'd hope we can all feel for the driver's horror in that moment. Here's hoping that all of the injured passengers recover quickly.

Car carriers (the trailers) are pretty low to the ground. Next time you see one take note as to how low they really are. The driver should have been more aware of this fact, AND the roads he decided to take.

Um, how about the horror of the engineer who was operating in the margins of safety and had no choice but stay in his cab with his train and for his passengers? Or the passengers themselves who could have been skewered or bludgeoned by any portion of the wreckage penetrating the train at 79 MPH? The truck driver obviously was either distracted, unaware of conditions, ignorant of the limitations of his vehicle, and/or just lacks any common sense. He is clearly the only party that set the event in motion. He shouldn’t be horrified; he should be ashamed, thankful he didn’t commit manslaughter, and asking for forgiveness by all. If anything he needed to be on the phone to 911, and heading down the tracks to render aid versus crying himself a river. I am horrified by him. Tell me I’m missing something here…

@@quarrycliff Thank you ! You hit the nail on the head man, that driver is 100% to blame for this, no question. As a class A truck driver you alone are responsible for the safe operation of that vehicle, period. It is a tremendous responsibility that not all drivers take seriously. It is DRILLED into your head over and over how to safely cross RR tracks and to be aware of low slung units getting hung up on the tracks in PRECISELY this type of situation. This was totally avoidable. Glad no one was seriously injured.

As a class A truck driver you are taught over and over again to be aware of low slung units while crossing RR tracks, no question the driver should never have attempted to cross the tracks at that location. It's a tremendous responsibility to operate a tractor trailer, but unfortunately not every driver takes it that way.
