TheHaywire's interview with singer/songwriter Amy Lavere between sets on June 14, 2010 at the Rochester International Jazz Festival. Lavere, who was backed by guitarist Joseph Restivo and drummer George Sluppick of the City Champs, discusses her early resistance and subsequent re-introduction to country music after moving to Memphis, the work of her early bands like Last Minute, why Last Minute was mis-labeled as punk, her affinity for the standup bass, working with producer Jim Dickinson, the direction she's gone on her more recent material with producer Craig Silvey (which can be heard on the 2011 release Stranger Me), collaborating with romantic partners, staying on good terms and even working with former partners like drummer Paul Taylor and Gabe Kudela, guitarist Steve Selvidge's departure to join The Hold Steady, the flexibility and range of her new backing band which consists of guitarist Joe Restivo and drummer George Sluppick (both of The City Champs), her hesitations when it comes to playing her own material, and her jazz influences.
