Seth, my favorite English teacher once told me there are too many amazing books out there to waste your time reading something you don’t like, but always give it at least two chapters and never be so stubborn that you’re unwilling to come back and give it another try later in life. Maybe someday I’ll go back and try to listen to Celebrity Baby Teeth again. (No, I won’t)

!! This is a great point. Many things I disliked when I was younger, I took a liking to later. And some pieces of art connect with you differently after a while. You might like or dislike parts that used to have the opposite effect on you.

Yes and yes. I started & bailed on Crime & Punishment 3 times before finally tackling & finishing it. A dense, wonderful, massive book, worth the effort but you have to decide if it's worth the time. And our time is worth more the older we get.

I 'read' (audiobooks) Anna Karenina and The House Of Mirth and The Jungle on some long road trips. Tolstoy, Wharton, and Sinclair. I haven't read Crime and Punishment, but I'm guessing these might be a bit more engaging?

Advice for reading Russian classics: Get yourself a list of the characters and each of their twentyfive different nicknames and formal names. It will save you trying to keep track of all these persons and then a couple of hundred pages in realize that the 75 persons are really 23 persons, but by now you are not quite sure which of them are really the same.

As a reader this conversation is giving me all the feels. 1. My goal is 52 books this year. And I think Amy is on track 2. Like Amy I also slip in a few children's books to keep me on track 😊. I would also suggest graphic novels. 3. I agree with Seth. You've got to give yourself permission to bail out out of a book. Life's too short! And that question is something that you need to decide upon if you're serious about reading

In terms of her book-reading pace, she is right on schedule. She needs to read 4.17 books a month. Her target is 50 for the year. She needed to have read 33.36 books by the end of August. She’s at 30 so far.

I love that at 8:03 we see Amy's quote on the cover of the book she's promoting. Probably she read that book in pre-print to give a quote, but it would be so much funnier if she read it years ago, loved it, forgot about it, read it again and didn't realize it was her endorsement on the cover.

CORRECTION: she's pretty much on pace after August is over she'll be 2/3 (approx. 67%) of the way thru the year and she's at 60% of her goal so if she reads like 3.5 more books by the end of the month she's on pace

Crime & Punishment is my favorite novel. She's not wrong. It's basically Rodya justifying and coming to terms with killing and then devolving into madness. It is written beautifully. 10/10 would recommend.

SETH! YES! You hit on a huge economic concept called “sunk cost.” You’ve already spent the money or time finding out it’s bad, there is no way to get that money back but you can STOP. People who stop watching bad movies or stop reading bad cooks are making the economically efficient choice. Since they already spent the money of the activity is not gaining you anything you have to stop or you lose twice as much! Great convo
