Completed in 1883 at a cost of $600,000 ($15 million today), the George Stephen House in downtown Montreal was built for George Stephen, a Scottish businessman who became President of the Bank of Montreal and the financial genius behind the creation of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Today, the mansion along with a sleek modern tower behind it, serves as a spectacular 5-star hotel that combines 19th century charm with 21st century comfort.
The mansion was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1971 and is considered one of the most beautiful Victorian mansions in North America.
