You're really lucky! I'd love to go to Deutschland some day and visit Solingen...such rich culture with a vast history of metalworking! Let me know how the trip went-I'd love to hear about your experience! Cheers!

@@TheKnifeRaven So I went to Böker and Otter (Hartkopf and Klaas next time). Böker has a large modern building with a fancy shop and an entire office complex nearby. Otter, on the other hand, is a small company with a very unassuming main building. They are situated close to Böker in a street called "Schwertstraße" ("Sword Street", Solingen used to produce bladed weapons for the military) with a variety of metalworking companies. I was the only customer at the time and the lady in the office showed me around. They have a little showroom with their products - they produce the all-metal Mercator knives and a variety of beautiful traditional pocket knives. They also have a variety of fixed blades, mostly traditional hunting type, and a beatiful sailor's knife. I spent more money at Otter than at Böker - the former has a special charm and the Mercator is a classic. - It is apparent that Germany is undergoing a process of de-industrialisation, combined with mass immigration and you can see that in Solingen. It is somewhat depressing to think that traditional companies with a century and more of culture will struggle to stay in business. Böker has outsourced parts of their production to China; their Chinese pocket knives - the Atlas and Atlas Backlock, for instance - are very affordable, made of superior metals (12C27N and D2 steel), and with expert computerised precision, as compared to Otter's traditional pocket knives, which are much more expensive, rough around the edges, and made of simple 4034 or C75. But I've come to really appreciate Otter for its traditional craftsmanship. I hope they will tay in business forever and I will send them all my $!

A proper gentlemans penknife is not cheap. And this is a PROPER gentlemans penknife. A celebration of it, really. Interesting that you say it is the little brother to their multi-tool, as by putting a belly on a pen blade, they've increased the utility of this knife greatly. With draw and push cuts available it's duties can be more than removing an errant thread or tortuous knot. A flint napper might recognise it as a sage leaf blade design. With regard to why blades bend, I'm casting back to my days at the school forge and I think it's to do with the heat treatment process. I could be wrong. Is it inevitable? I don't know, but I'd imagine straightening it would not fit into today's manufacturing processes. Enjoy. It's lovely.

Hello Ian, thanks again for stopping by! I am very happy you enjoyed the video! The utility on this knife is outstanding, truly. The belly and less pointy tip makes me think of a "Zulu Spearpoint". I believe Knife Thoughts discussed this. As for the heat-treatment, you're probably correct. Blades tend to bend when put through excessive heat. Why often to one side? I don't know. Regardless, this is still one of my favourites. Nothing is truly perfect, so this certainly deserves the love others have given it. Cheers!
@ianrosie4431

@@TheKnifeRaven Yes, I see what you mean about a Zulu Spearpoint when you focus on the tip. I'd instead taken the defining feature of the blade to be the belly, which tends not to be found on a Zulu Spear, but is on a Sage leaf.

As always an excellent review of an excellent piece. I am with Slick Slicers on the issue of shields but that said the Boker Chestnut Tree is a very elegant and subtle shield compared to some of the garish blingy ones seen on other brands. Your taste is class!

Slick's collection is mostly TEW at this point. I imagine you'd get used to such a style! 😅 I love Böker's new shield. The old, silver one was kind of ugly. I've been told I have very expensive taste...probably true. 🤣 Cheers!

One reason I like Copperhead and Canoe design is because the tang is not exposed, really don't know why knife manufactures make so few knives with the tang sunken into the knife. The shape of the blade is very similar to the RRR017 and I like it a lot though not crazy about that swedge the long pull great, I know it's an old fashioned style but a favourite of mine just about a perfect pocket knife in my opinion. You said hello to Alice but she didn't make a guest appearance maybe next time. 😁 Oh forgot to say I can do without shields except when they are small and classy like this one.

The blade is bent at the factory to be centered between the liners (or pretty close to center) when closed. At GEC I saw them anneal the pivot end of the hardened blade by passing it though an electric heater element - the cutting edge is not heated, so its unaffected and stays hard. Softening the blade at the end allows the blade to be bent slightly after the knife is assembled so it can be adjusted for fit. FYI - I recently bought a Boker Barlow and it has an almost identical cast to the blade as yours. Must have been made by the same Messermacher.
