I'm a veteran DIYer who loves hand tools. It took me years to come to grips with sharpening. I blame my slow progress on not having good YT videos like yours. Nice job.

I came for the "plan" but stayed for a very good back-to-basics sharpening video.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for a practical guide on how to sharpen one of these. I'm a hobby wood worker/crafter and just needed straight-forward info. I picked up a vintage planer that is in mostly good shape and just needs a little refining and was reverting into fetal rocking by the multitude of overwhelming information out here -- interesting, but not of use for my purpose. Man. I also ordered the sharpening tools you recommended. Thanks. (again :) )

Really enjoying your videos. Really breaks down how to get into hand tool woodworking in an accessible and cost effective manner. I plan on building my work bench soon and seeing your shop setup really gives me inspiration that this is possible by hand in my basement. Thankyou

Awesome to hear! Thanks for sharing and good luck with the shop! With enough time I believe you can do just about anything with hand tools.

Great video with excellent camera work and no stupid music background. Also, your shop is an inspiration. I noticed you have a small workbench. If you desire, a video on making it would be very interesting, especially to people with small work space.

Excellent advice! I've spent way too much money looking for the magic sharpening system for plane blades and I can tell you that you won't do any better than this system. If you can learn to free hand sharpen, that's good, but I don't sharpen enough to do that. This system will do the job for almost all plane blade sharpening.

These are my thoughts exactly! I've tried freehand sharpening but always got frustrated with it and came to the conclusion that I'm fine taking the extra 30 seconds or so to setup the honing guide.

Nice video - simple, direct and clear. I agree with LitoGeorge that a strop improves the edge, but like you, I don't think it's necessary for a beginner. He is absolutely correct that you should be careful about contaminating plates with coarser swarf. Also, it's worth mentioning that really cheap diamond plates are made with plastic backing that can flex during the sharpening process, thus becoming nonplanar. Yours is the sharpening video I wish I'd seen 50 years ago. Good job.

I completely disagree. A strop is essential to sharpening. I dont care if its thick cardboard, leather, denim or even smooth wood. I'll admit that polishing compound really does make a useful difference too. My personal litmus test to everything I sharpen is if it shaves arm hair. If it does, good enough. If not, something is wrong and will make your woodworking unnecessarily difficult. Also recommend a wipe of the iron/chisel face with a cloth when moving from one stone to the other. Mixing swarf is a good way to hasten the demise of your finer and finer diamond stones. Takes about 2 seconds or less.

ps: yesterday I sharpened a bent neck gouge. Blacksmith made, I put a new edge on it. It felt sharp after sharpening but couldnt shave hair. After stropping the gouge with red oxide (I dont care which compound I use - whatever is closest at hand - not for the purists!) it shaved my arm hair with ease. I thought of this video and offer the update.
