Violent crime rates have risen in the last few years in America, while deepening divisions between law enforcement and the communities they serve make solutions harder to come by. Antong Lucky, a former leader of the Dallas Bloods who now leads an organization to end gang violence, and Eddie Garcia, the city's police chief, are leading a pioneering approach to change that.
They recognize that effective crime reduction cannot be achieved solely by arresting more people. And they recognize that police officers cannot effectively do their jobs when they are treated like public enemies. Instead, they have sought to bridge the trust gap between law enforcement and the community by bringing everyone to the table. By holding meetings with the community, visiting prisons, and reframing interactions with law enforcement, they've created a model of cooperation and mutual accountability.
And their approach seems to be working: Dallas was the only top 10 most populous city to see crime rates fall by the end of 2022. Their efforts form part of a national coalition aiming to replicate this success elsewhere.
