We didn't know how good we had it in the 80s, quality of tape decks (and tapes) was just taken for granted. Great video!

I don't know about how expensive a Nakamichi is but I got one in perfect shape for $350.00. dbx is great, but it is a powerful compander. That means it compresses the audio in record and expands it during playback. It is vital that the deck is properly aligned or adjusted to prevent pumping and breathing effect. Same can happen with Dolby as well. So Bias and Record sensitivity and Equalization must be spot on as does head azimuth for best high frequency response. I have had the pick of the litter and doing tape for over 50 years. There is nothing wrong at all with Akai. I have an Akai Diatone GX-Z6300EX running Japanese Voltage as it was a Japanese Domestic Market only. It is a good sounding deck. You make references to audiophile. Michael, stop mentioning them. Who cares what they like. It matters what works for you. Too many people are too busy telling others what to do, and don't listen what that person ultimately wants. High End audio is really guilty of sales people selling you what they want, not what you want. So rock on! Love what you have and keep sharing your experiences. Screw the Audiophiles. Good luck and good listening.

Wait... your Nak's dbx works in both playback AND recording? My Yamaha K-960 can only do it in playback!

The only cassette unit I have with dbx is a Tascam 424 4-track recorder. It does reduce tape hiss, but when music dynamics change, there is a noticeable "breathing" artifact. However, I like the idea of having dbx as an option on a standard cassette deck, and your GX-R70 also has Dolby B and C for diversity. Nice find! Liked and subscribed.

I got like 30 cassette decks.. I would never admit I liked dbx, what does it do.. I like the tape hiss I guess.. My main thing in a deck is have no TAPE TYPE detection, just give me a switch.. I can set it to TYPE II and tape onto a TYPE I.. I have experimented with the settings so a TYPE I sounds pretty awesome.. I am working on another recorder setup right now, which the details will remain top secret.. But it was a great video

I also replaced a nak bx-300 discrete head pos with an akai lol, but i got a hx-r41 remote compatible. It is a 3 motor auto reverse dolby c&b ,has music search not as fancy as the gx-r70 but recording i usually use the dolby c. i have recorded on normal bias maxell ur 90 with dolby c on and the reproduction is awesome have some chrome blanks coming bought off ebay to give that a try. There is not much info online to the akai i have it usually reverts to the hx-r44. I record cassettes which i call my beer bottles and road signs collection (cause i will bust a road sign with a beer bottle empty of course) to play back in my 1998 mercedes sl500's weekend cruiser cassette deck which is a bose crap system. My home stereo consist of adcom gtp500 preamp, gfa555 amp, klipsch heresy's x2, 2 heresy clones, 2 single channel rane eq's for correction, pioneer hr-99 8 track deck yes dammit i said 8 track, realistic lab-400 turntable with m97xe cartridge, yamaha 5 disc with usb play only, a pure junk teac ad-800 cd,cassette, usb w/record to usb that was an over priced china pos and of course the akai. i can go from superb sound quality well to my ears to making the roof leak, dimming the lights just by pushing volume + on my remote. I spent a small mint keeping the nak going sold that crap on ebay before it decided to crap on me again ( He left me excellent feedback, probably raising frigging hell by now thanks for the nearly 500 bucks).. Good luck with your akai deck i so far love mine.

If you had the AKAI GX R 99 like I do you would consider it the best deck with DBX. I myself don't. Too many to compare to Like the Yamaha KX-1200 3 head, Teac V-900X to name a few.

Very sleek looking machine! I love Yamaha design from that 80s time period - they had some gear that looked quite futuristic and minimal.
