Pierce Brosnan ate Mrs. Fitzsimmons' sea bass. CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS:- - Poison no longer drains health outside of battle as of Gen V. - There was a method to re-teach Pokémon moves they had forgotten in Generations I and II, by transferring them to Pokémon Stadium 2. - Fire isn’t strong against Fairy, it just resists it. - I mention Fairy being introduced to balance out some weaker types, such as Steel. It's implicit, but I should have made it clear: I meant Steel is fairly weak offensively. - Black & White tell you who Alder is the first time you meet him. - Nob Ogasawara included some memes in his games, particularly from the Something Awful forums. I wasn't familiar with these memes which is why I didn't remember the previous games having any. - While most of Kalos' towns and cities are named after perfumes, Lumiose isn't one of them. Even then, I'm not entirely sure the criticism is accurate. It seems more likely that I don't remember these names because I didn't play Generation V and VI as much. - If you run from Deoxys, it will reappear atop Sky Pillar later, meaning you don’t have to save a ways back. - There are ways to reset EVs. The Reset Bag in Super Training is a hard reset; the EV-reducing Berries let you micromanage. I imply in the video that you can’t correct mistakes with EVs so to be clear, you can. - You don't always want 31 IVs across the board. There are certain builds, as well as Hidden Power, which benefit from different IV spreads. So you couldn’t cleanly remove IVs without some issues.

I come back to this video so often. I love Pokemon, and I love hearing other people talk about the games' strengths and weakness. And this is one of the few videos I've found that actually does a good job balancing out talking about the positivies and negatives, so many other poketubers or retrospectives I've tried to watch are just incredibly cynical and not enjoyable to me. Pokemon certainly has it's faults, but man the series wouldn't be so popular if it didn't also have tons of positives and I think some people forget that and just focus on the negative.

4:53:58 Pokemon sun and moon actually did something similar to this with the regional bug, vikavolt. Vikavolt has a really, REALLY high attack stat, especially for something as common as an early game bug. So it only evolves once you get to the area right before the legendary encounter, which essentially is the victory road of that game. And I love it, it's so satisfying once you finally get a vikavolt because it's the final reward for keeping this partner with you for your entire journey.

@Declan McKenna Yeah, I have been playing Pokemon Battle Revolution (a friend found his copy and wanted to battle,) and I use so much strategy that feels like a complete waste. Why would I status conditionmy opponent and buff up my Pokemon when I can just bring 3-6 sweepers including legendaries and insta-kill everything? It feels like I should un-learn the usefulness of buffs. But before this I just finished the Triangulum arc of SMT Devil Survivor 2. In that game I spent multiple days testing different team compositions and demons just to barely beat the Tico's while underleveled. I had to use characters I never tried in the campaign and put skills on Demon's I previously considered trash just to get to the final boss stage (each stage giving me an "oh sh't, there's more!?" moment before I lost.)

At the segment with the oceanic museum, it absolutely taught kids things they didn't already know and inspired their own research. I got the game the summer that I was around 8, and at the start of the school year, we went on a field trip to the local museum, even being allowed to see where they store the stuff that they dont put on display. Slateport was fresh in my mind at the time, and i think i was the only one excited that we got to see actual newspaper clippings from when Titanic sunk. (It was that era where people were bullied for liking pokemon though, so I'd be damned if any of my classmates knew why I was so fascinated.)

2:05:02 idea for that: Have Archie fight Maxie before you. Archie gets defeated, but you're able to jump straight into the fight before Maxie can heal. Give Maxie pokemon that are a good 10-15 levels higher, but start the battle with them at half or so health, and one or two knocked out, with various status effects like burn/paralysis on the rest. This keeps Maxie as threatening, give Archie more to do in the plot, and makes both of them feel more competent.

@@shoogles_ yeah, I can understand some people not liking them but they were one of my favorite parts of Pokemon games. Building the perfect Pokemon for a particular contest category, making perfect poffins or poffin-like items, building their move sets around them, outfits for the ones that had those, contests required more time and training than actual battles. I especially liked how in Sapphire and Ruby any pokémon who won the master contest would get their art displayed in the museum. Yes, there is some luck involved, but that helped it feel like a real contest against other people. And if you understand the moves' effects and pay attention to what the other Pokemon are doing, you can pretty much always win unless you are really unlucky.

That would be fine if put into a game that's about that sort of over-the-top stuff, but Pokémon isn't. Or at least it wasn't. It's so out of place here it's actually off putting, you can really tell that whole section was written on par with the modern, anime styled Pokémon games. It's so obnoxiously tone deaf considering the rest of the game isn't like that, because the originals weren't like that. They might as well had rewritten the whole game, but then they wouldn't had been able to cash in on nostalgia.

In my opinion mythical pokemon were BEST handled in generation 4, because they're status as mythical pokemon were tied directly into the world and lore itself. There're three mythical pokemon in the base gen 4 games, Shaymin, Darkrai and Arceus. Okay, while the only real hint that Shaymin exists in the base game is the mysterious dead end in route 224(there isn't another dead end like that in the entire Sinnoh region), the other two are masterfully done. During an optional bit in Canalave city, you find a boy trapped in an eternal nightmare and his parents tell you that you must find Cresselia's feather to help wake the boy up. The only hint that a pokemon is causing the boy's nightmare is the boy's sleep talking when you interact with him. I know Shay rags on how ugly that old pokemon names are, with them all being stylised in all caps, but the writers do something smart with this here. The boy says something akin to "DAR...DARK...is watching me...". Instead of some amorphous or metaphorical 'darkness', the player knows that the boy is talking about a pokemon here due to the caps, hinting towards the existence of Darkrai. This can also be inferred from the existence of Cresselia. All of the legendary pokemon in Sinnoh with the exception of Shaymin are part of some trio or group. So the player can easily infer that there must be some sort of counterpart to Cresselia that exists. Arceus is also brilliant. In the postgame, if you visit Cynthia's grandma's hometown and observe the mural inside the ruins there, Cynthia pops out of nowhere and comments that while that mural likely represents the lake trio Uxie Azelf and Mesprit with the trio master Dialga/Palkia in the centre, it might actually represent Dialga, Palkia and Giratina as part of a trio and some sort of trio master to them might exist. This is the only hint towards Arceus in the game and it's brilliant. I can't stress enough how these hints and lore fascinated me as a kid. The internet wasn't that prevalent in 2008, and me and my friends were all coming up with wild speculations about how to catch these mythical pokemon and what type of requirements there must be to get them. It felt like that's actually what made the pokemon 'mythical', instead of them just being unobtainable without an event. This mythical quality is what's severely lacking in the modern mythical pokemon imo.

that kind of worldbuilding and the actual sidequest, i guess i'd call it, involved in getting all of them is really great, and makes it all the more unfortunate that the azure flute (arceus' event trigger item) was never officially released. i remember reading somewhere that they thought 'take the azure flute up to spear pillar' was somehow too difficult a puzzle, which i think is a bit ridiculous, like what else would you do with it, spear pillar is the Main Legendary Place, of course that's where arceus would appear

1:02:15 I suppose I can jump in here and say, yes, Idol Culture is entirely built on it's artificial aspects. Idols are built and raised from the ground up to be "your" perfect girlfriend, kind of like how boy bands were and still are here, only amped up to much higher levels. Idols practically don't exist or have lives outside of their job, and most don't really get to interact with their fans, which makes Lissia something of an oddity when comparing it to real life idols. Lissia is much closer to how anime portrays idols, with much more freedom to do how they please as long as they keep up their job. It's much more idealized, and how people usually associate idol culture. A lot of her actions feeling "fake" may be part of her idol status as well, as a lot of her character tics and quirks are things that are usually pre-decided for the idols to embody. Fill a niche, that makes them appeal to a specific group of people, and in turn, makes those specific group buy merch. So, in a way, yeah, Idols are just there "to be cute" because that's kind of their job. One thing that comes up in this particular circumstance that stands out is that Idols are not by any means allowed to have relationships with anyone, as doing so is "betraying" their legions of fans. Idols that caught even getting close to those of the opposite sex get expunged in usually very public ways, as examples for the rest of them. Idol culture is kind of dark and screwed up and I'm not gonna go super indepth into it but it's totally there and learning all the nitty gritty details about it puts a LOT of anime and Japan as a whole in a very different light.

Unbelievably detailed. One thing I do want to praise is your ability to make it sound like it’s all one recording, I imagine you didn’t just sit reading a script for 7 hours so props to you for making it consistently detailed, funny, informative and a treat. Thank you! Would love to see more if you need something to do..

It's a shame I'm finding this two years after release, but I'm pretty glad that I did. I looked at the 8hour timestamp and was immediately intrigued, and by just a few minutes in, I had been rolling in laughter and knew I was in it for the long haul. Truly, good job.

This is late, but just wanted to say this video is the best Pokemon content I’ve seen on KZitem. A balanced perspective on modern Pokemon is rare, so I appreciate it.

How I just found this video is beyond me but I’m in love with this video. It’s amazing to listen to, and fall asleep to. Omega ruby was a phenomenal game, and I love remembering it.

being able to freely walk into other people's homes is often brought up as something ridiculous in the pokemon series, but I don't think it even is that ridiculous. It's important to remember that the world of pokemon is far friendly, and more co-operative than our world, and people are generally quite happy to go out of their way to help random pokemon or complete strangers. Because of this, I think it's fairly reasonable that people would be happy for a kid going on an adventure across the region to come into their home for a little visit and a friendly conversation. In the world of pokemon it makes a lot of sense, it only seems ridiculous through the lens of our world, where people would generally rather stay out of each other's way.

"Which is fine, send me the link" has been the best joke that was just slipped in and I actually laughed out loud. I'm not even halfway into the video but it's been an amazing and insightful look at things, both good and bad, that I've noticed with the series but couldn't explain it in detail like this wonderful madman can.

I won't lie to you, when I'm on my laptop for hours on end doing homework for college, or even when I'm just looking for something to listen to? I've come back to this video so many times. Your commentary is witty and interesting to listen to, and how you examine the series through Omega Ruby objectively and attempt to break down all the flaws with the game and the series is fantastic. I can't imagine how much work went into this video. Thanks for the entertainment. :) Also, Pierce Brosnan ate Mrs. Fitzsimmon's Seabass
