One of the best things about version 2 is that the co-op campaign is baked into the story. The team of splinter cells that destroy the foundry in Iceland and start the prison riot are the co-op team you can play as in co-op mode

Hyper, you need to post some updates. There's an additional way of doing things with the first bomb on Version 2. So, there's a reason for collecting the medical files of the JBA top brass. Jamie has a pace maker and you can see it on the EEV, you can also target it and shut it off with your OCP, causing that nerd to be heartbroken in more ways than one. So, about the EEV, remember how Hisham said you can remote hack it? You can and start the detonation sequence, prompting more dialogue and then B.J. Sykes (V2's Stanley Dayton) to come off the billboard and defuse it for you. God I love this level. Had to add this as well. You can also blind Emile, grab him and he gives the most identity questioning dialogue. I wanted to see what he said in V1, but I'd have to do some wonderous BS to interrogate him.

Right off the bat seeing the nearly two hour runtime, stylish intro, vibe heavy music, and overall production value, I was hooked. Metal Gear Solid 4 does something similar to that blasted desert section in Double Agent V1 right at the start by putting Snake in a warzone letting him sneak around, but the difference is jarring in how fun one is and how unfun the other is. Here’s my perspective on Sarah’s death I agree with you on the fact it was executed poorly. But I do think it was necessary in order to push Sam into becoming a deep cover operative. It’s very out of character in my opinion for Sam to just ditch his daughter entirely for undercover work (while she remains alive) Now that given, they should’ve definitely fleshed Sarah out more before pulling that move, simply because it would’ve served the opening much better, and her death wouldn’t have been as cheap. Sam’s grief should’ve also been showcased as well

I really wish they just committed to one version with both teams, each version has a few moments where it's clearly a "We're running out of time and money" situation that I think could have been avoided by just focusing their work on one game. (Command Center in version 2 Russia not even being playable definitely feels like a cut section.) I'm iffy on the trust meters, I think it's a neat idea that neither version lands. (1 has it be too easy to please everyone while 2's nonsensical single bar means there's only a minor consequence for it actually reaching the end and also means actions that *shouldn't* make one side distrust you still impact it.) For instance, I think Daylight missions would work better if the game was a little longer but the day light levels were primarily towards the end of the game (still have some shadow cover during indoor sections.) as opposed to Version 1 having you first real mission be daylight. I really feel like Version 2 *wanted* to have proper cutscenes and the weird montages were a compromise when they ran out of time, I really doubt that was what they wanted.

The Ideal version of Double Agent would be a mix of the two Versions, none of their weaknesses. If they wanted to do the whole 'Enrica' thing, they could have at least added a bit more flavor to it as to make it work, some agonizing for Sam as he figures 'I did NOT figure her into this, when the time comes all of them will die...Can I hope to pull the trigger on her?' with that little element of tragedy as she, in a moment far too late to even hope to stop the inevitable, reveals (to the player but not to anyone in game) she's going traitor herself at the same time as your cover basically disintegrating and you being given the order to terminate the JBA INCLUDING her. Maybe have THAT be a choice that can be suitably dramatic as hell. Deciding if, during that encounter at the Elevator, she's to die now or not by having Sam GET THE DROP ON HER so she can't whip out her piece either, least so you'd think she was until she reveals that she was never going to shoot you in the first place, having grown disillusioned with the JBA and wanting you instead. And while she ultimately dies anyways at the end on the Rooftop, it could be a similar effect to how the first mission handled the 'Sarah's Dead Sam' reveal in Version 2. A hope spot followed by reality driving that irreconcilable wedge between them. More moments with the JBA as to show their HUMANITY would basically be better as to preserve the meaning of the choices, have the Lambert or Jamie shot decision ofc but with those very moments clashing about, having moments where their ideal isn't a degrade into 'Emile goes full Mad Bomber so you have to shoot him dead now' but genuinely seeming like they could have a point, just lost in the extremism and terrorist acts that ultimately place them on the wrong end of Good and Evil. Moss as you said, could save your hide and you save him, thus he warms up and acts more at ease around you but still making his comments toward you, just with far less venom in his tone. Like a brick joke between friends. Having that exchange in the grapple could be all 'I guess I was right the first time, well played Old Man...' with a tone of grim respect. Jaime genuinely believing you a friend from the outset, even if you were soft he'd probably be commenting 'He may not exactly have a taste for blood like us but the man's effective and professional, like a grandpa who could whup the entirety of the Navy SEALS.' and shit like that, so perhaps having him be far more heartbroken when he's a target ultimately because he's far too much of an remorseless killer and unrepentant of his evil deeds to be allowed to still draw breath. Even Emile, he could still be employing his charisma and while you and he both KNOW that only one of you will walk away from that rooftop tonight, it would make more sense to have that game of theirs, where neither will give ground. He knows you have a job to do, and would still put down Erica if he knew about her also going traitor and still would crater cities with Red Mercury? He could at least be more like Vlad in Max Payne 2, an element of frustration as you prove far more difficult to stop than he thought but he doesn't truly hate you. Instead of that stupid 'Killing the guy who popped Enrica despite the fact he's a fucking CO-WORKER doing the thing you failed to do' thing, have the two have different conversations depending on if you killed Lambert and Enrica or not or a MIX (Killing Lambert but not Enrica, Saving Lambert but killing Enrica). If he'd killed the two himself, the Agent and him have a tense conversation but the Agent asks Sam if he's OK, he speaks, quite drained, 'I'm out. Let Williams know we've got words before I turn in my two weeks...' before he walks away, cutting away the comms on his person and handing it to the Agent. If he spared Lambert AND Enrica, have the two have a somewhat more tense conversation with the Agent remarking, "Somewhat naive Sam. You know the mission and I just had to finish it." and the response being, 'Reasonable, you didn't know.' followed by him suddenly SLUGGING the Agent unconscious and cutting away his comms, knowing he's most CERTAINLY fired after that. If you Killed Lambert but Spared Enrica, THEN we do the whole 'See you in hell' exchange as the two argue it out first. More meaningful if you saved Hamza as HE will be the guy who you see on that rooftop. Otherwise it's a Newbie Agent who, nonetheless, follows orders. If it's the Newbie Agent, he gets choked the fuck out, if it's Hamza then Sam's slicing the guy's throat open followed by 'See you in hell Hamza, save a spot for me.' before cutting away his comms and dropping it on the body. If you spared Lambert but killed Enrica, THEN the conversation is more friendly but still somewhat tense for the Agent and Sam. After all, he's still got his own problems to deal with, he's just less likely to leave 3rd Echelon at that point. Because as it stands, BOTH games kind of end not SUPER great, but Version 2 does a better job of lining up to Conviction.

I feel pretty much the same as yourself in every regard with Double Agent... only I played V2 first having not upgraded consoles yet when it came out, and never played V1 till years later on pc. Much prefer V2. I still alway loved Conviction too for where it brought Ironside and Sam, despite it's gameplay direction (but would've loved the original cancelled version of it more), and blacklist felt generic without Ironside and heavily cliche writing, though I still enjoyed the visuals and gameplay of both. Great review man, although version 1 might look better visually and play more fluidly in some instances, I’ll always prefer version 2, not only bc of the nostalgia of it being my first game ever, but because it sticks true to what I think splinter cell really is, and why it’s one of my favorite series to date, even after so long since a new release

@@hypertensionfilms5439 honestly the prison level is my personal favorite, mainly for the environment. Every time I think of DA I think of those dark and dingy prison hallways, with piles of trash burning giant flames being the only source of any light in most areas, let alone the ambient sounds and yelling guards as you sneak around them/ take them out. Pure nostalgia every time o hear that guard yell “come out here, I know you’re hiding”

Just finished watching your review. Good stuff all around and a chill watch. I pretty much agree to all of your points with a few nitpicks. This game was the splinter cell title that got me interested on getting an xbox one and playing both versions as it is the most accessible way to play double agent. God forbid trying to play the broken PC port, especially playing the downgraded ps2 version. The falws are major, the half-assed reputation system, the obviously rushed story-line, the shotty level design and lighting system of version 1, and finally the under-developed JBA cast. Despite all that, it is somehow my favorite splinter cell title. Specifically version one. The reason? Style. Playing in missions infiltrating the JBA headquarters is such a stellar idea to sell you the double agent gimmick. Stealing crew members files, finger prints, eye scans while under their noses is leagues better than Version 2’s. Missions like V1 Cozumel is one of the superior missions than it’s 6th gen counterpart. Shanghai especially being the highlight of V1 and prefer over the rather underwhelming train heist. Even the little things like the use of Michael McCann’s underrated soundtrack to add tension when nearing a guard got me to really love the 7th gen version. Dont get me wrong Version 2 is objectivley superior than it’s next-gen counterpart. I dont have to gamble whether I get spotted or not and can depend on my hud to inform me how visible I am along with the emotional gut punch on iceland and the jailbreak setup in Ellseworth Penitentiary is better handled. Cheers to Montreal for bringing Coop into the mix as it was such a beloved feature that my sibling and i loved from Chaos Theory. However, it is just preference. 23:45 I actually much prefer the humorless Sam. Dont forget he just lost his daughter so of course he wouldnt be all witty like he was before. It honestly kind baffled me on how much ludo-narrative dissonence in V2 where Sam would still act like himself considering his loss and working with a terrorist organization. Also the ending in Version 2 was just uncharacteristic of Sam in my opinion. The spotty romance between Sam and Enrica is eye rolling and barley has anything for us the player to get invested in apart from easily glossed emails. Killing an NSA member just to avenge a terrorist he loved didnt helped. It had potential to be heartbreaking but my god it felt out of left field and underdeveloped. If I was to write Enrica. Id rather have her as a surrogate daughter to Sam. It was such an obvious opportunity for Sam to have character growth to seeing Enrica as Sarah and trying to protect her from getting killed. We would have moments with our lead dealing with his grief and projecting it upon Enrica. Being all protective and doing anything he can to keep her from causing casualties. Hell, It would make the frame Enrica decision even more painful and we could have seen Sam breaking down. while he did what he had to in order to save lives, however, ending up seeing another person he cared getting killed without warning. I know this is a Tom Clancy game, but it had so much potential to be a character defining moment for our gruff protagonist! In all honestly, In order to really play double agen, people should really go all out and play both versions to get the full experience. Its unfortunate to see both studios were unable to completely realize their vision and ending up its own pros and cons. If only we can see any dev diaries or any interviews in retrospect of developing this title just to see any concepts or cut ideas and content they wanted to implement as it was clearly a rushed production. Out of all splinter cell titles. This honestly deserves the remake treatment more than the first. It has so many cool ideas and features that has the potential to be rectified. I know it may never get to have its chance but a man can dream. Thanks if you ever have the chance at reading this. Again, the issues are there, but I cant help but love what it could have been.

Well said, and I do agree with a lot of what you said. I don't think V1 is as awful as some make it out to be. And I really love the idea of hiding in plain sight in JBA HQ. I also agree that people should play both versions, as they both have their merits and flaws. Either way, I'd consider myself a fan of both. Thanks for your insight, love hearing people's thoughts on Splinter Cell 🤙

This was my first splinter cell when i was little. And even i being a kid could tell that the pc version was rushed. Like having the ps2 cutscenes in places where dont belong. For example the endung of the first mission, you get to the helicopter on a rope, but the cutscene is sam rushing to the helicopter and finding that her daughter has died? And then this random ahh dude get us a free knife fo escape prison? Like who tf are you

I know it's not a popular opinion but I couldn't disagree more about the music. I think the music in double agent is by far the best of all of them, while chaos theory is one of if not the worst. I think double agent themes sound intense and have a sense of danger to them where chaos theory sounds campy, upbeat and even having a light hearted fun vibe at times. One of the worst examples of this for comparison: the soundtrack that plays during the bomb disarm sequence when closing in on Shetland in ct vs the bomb disarm sequence in okhosk in da. The da soundtrack gives a sense of adrenaline and even some despair when the strings come in, bringing a sense of "this could be the end..." Where the ct soundtrack sounds like something from a zany gameshow where the object is to spin in circles around the bat till you're dizzy then scoring ten baskets on the arcade style basketball machine before your opponent. Anyone else agree?
