Toncs, I'm a bit loathe to post this, since I respect your skill at this game so much, but... I really think some of your attacks are starting to get *REALLY* risky. I remember you doing wild stuff like later in this episode back in 1939, and even all through 1940, but... it's mid-1941 now, my friend - The times, they are a-changin'. I admire the heck out of your gumption, but I do worry about how long your luck can hold out 😬Because, even though you are quite skilled, in situations like these, eventually expertise just gives way to pure, dumb luck as to whether or not you'll survive. And I've noticed that, as your skill has increased, so has the frequency with which you make risky, dangerous decisions 😕 I'm really starting to think the US Navy was quite wise to stick their veteran sub commanders behind a desk after a set number of missions... whether they wanted it or not 😅They say familiarity breeds contempt - What happens when a commander becomes as familiar with danger and risky situations as... well, as YOU have? 🙁 ...I hope you know I don't mean any disrespect by saying any of this - I just want to make sure I have plenty of these videos I can look forward to in the future! It's... completely out of self-interest, I swear 😅😒

As in real life Prien had a tendency to get his boat on sandpads, or doing extremely wild things from close distance. He was caught when he tried to torp a boat from a few hundred meters while two escorts were very near, they noticed him and started a real hunter killer mission. Noone knows what led to his demise, some speculate he tried to fire his rear tube to the front and his own torpedo catched him. Kretchmer was kindof more relaxed, although he made some tactical errors, and was fortunate that his orders were disregared by his watchcrew on his last patrol. If they would have stayed on the surface as Kretchmer ordered, the radar equipped destroyers, would most likely ram them as they did with Schepke that night.

RANGE to Target. When you make a surface torpedo attack, you do not have the advantage of the systems in the attack periscope like split prism. But you do have the one you use, namely the height of the mast against the reticule marks on the lens, then put it into the aiming 'wheel' and calculate. Obviously you cannot do that with the UZO, since it is not set up for that. HOWEVER, you can simply ask the watch officer for the range to the nearest ship, and get it exactly. Apparently the UZO, in real life, had nothing but a center bearing line. BUT, also in real life, the captain using the UZO (a binocular), and the watch officers were trained Kreigsmarine officers, who were practiced in this discipline, and were using eyeballs and binoculars, both of which allow for parallax to the target. Thus, a trained officer could tell using size, AOB and experience, with some precision, how far a target was from the watch-stander. But in SH3, you are not actually using the UZO, rather you are receiving data through a 2-D monitor, and this removes all of the range-finding ability you would have had in real life. FOR THIS REASON, I think that asking the watch officer for the range is in keeping with the spirit of what you are trying to emulate in this game! Good thread on this, comparing RL to SH3 game: < www.subsim.com/radioroom//showthread.php?t=151742 > from: [ SUBSIM Radio Room Forums ], titled: "Uzo, its use in real life and in SH3".

I notice that every Silent Hunter game (and also other subsims like Cold Waters) portrays multiple shell hits as survivable for your boat albeit with a little hull integrity loss. For such an otherwise realistic simulator that seems to run at odds with the wartime assertion that one hit on the pressure hull would doom the boat (either causing it to sink or preventing it from diving at all).
@thisherehandleIdospout
9 күн бұрын
Well... if you don't mind allowing yourself a little suspension of disbelief, than in this situation you could maybe chalk it up to a combination of factors, possibly including lower shell caliber and/or an obsolete and outdated gun, maybe using HE or even obsolete, anemic AP shells (it was the merchantman that hit him, after all - IIRC, they stuck whatever guns they could scrounge up on them, particularly this early in the war.) All of that, combined with possibly-glancing blows on U-80 that didn't compromise the pressure hull, at least that badly... yeah, I could see it. I mean, we saw that the one shell hit U-80 right at the top of the deck, and I could've sworn the other hit somewhere on the bridge - Neither of those shots likely hit the pressure hull at a good, clean 90-degree angle. Far from it, I'd wager. All of these things being true *at the same time* does seem... implausible, I'll admit... but to be fair, I've heard of way more bizarre and unlikely things happening *IN REAL LIFE*, lol =p

Fantastic episode! You do like to take chances : ) if I get anywhere near that close , I shoot and scoot and don´t hang around much. I also think that you suffered from faulty torpedos. When I get more than one dud, i generally decrease the depth to about 3-5 meters (weather permitting) to hopefully account for them running too deep. Looking forward to the next installment! -- And yes, as someone else in comments mentioned, there is at least one game (i think still in early access) where you play as a pt boat.

Generally 1 out of 10 is faulty. To have a sure shot without actual distance to target known Gyro has to be very 0. SH is really unforgiving with imprecision few hundred meters off or one knot faster or slower, it will miss.

Yep I would have made that shot submerged. If I even try it. The angle was actually horrible, the ship zigzagging, definitively a little bit hasty decision.
@thisherehandleIdospout

1:05:00 To be fair, Toncs, regardless of speed, although you were presenting a pretty narrow target to that freighter, you were also presenting one that was pretty stationary in a lateral sense, too, since you were moving at almost a 90-degree angle to them and were not really zigzagging or making any evasive maneuvers to throw off their aim. Not trying to be critical, mind you - Everything was happening VERY fast, and you already had a LOT on your plate, and even if you had made evasive maneuvers, they very well could have hit you anyways. But that's my point: Some more speed, some zigzagging - I don't think either would've made much of a difference, when it comes down to it. Just be glad you escaped! Remember the pilot's motto: Any landing you can walk away from... is a good one ;)

8 күн бұрын
Wow that would be something. Although I think the only way to actually shoot without knowing AOB and speed is coming directly in front of or behind the target. The con is that the ship gives the narrowest profile, so its easiest for it to dodge a torp.
@AndiKoehn
7 күн бұрын
@@gaborrajnai6213 no, not like that. The Ausdampfverfahren actually is method where you go from a far off parallel course to a collision course (turn in to target and adjust speed or course until you get a steady bearing). Then some math is required to calculate target speed, set AOB to 90° and this gives the opportunity to shoot from large distances while keep staying undetected. Provided the target is not changing course. 🙂
