I do understand that lane discipline at that roundabout was a major fault. However, if road markings had have been regularly maintained, Ian would probably not have committed this error. I remember it was not like that 30 or 40 years ago. It is illegal to drive a car on the public road if it's not road worthy. The same standard should apply when roads are not maintained to a reasonable standard, The highways agency should be held fully to account.

Lol, I have some sympathy for Ian re the worn out road markings at the roundabout, I challenge the most experienced and cautious driver to get that right all the time. The truth is sometimes it can be confusing cos the markings have faded and there is no signage, but once you've been round it and figured it out, piece of cake. This is why at some roundabouts I give other cars a lot of grace, never assuming they know where the hell they are going. I'm not a beeper, in fact I hate beepers. Don't beep people, unless it is to say hello or goodbye. Don't be a d*ck, the world is full of d*cks (apologies to any ducks who may inadvertently take offence at my post).🦆Ducks forever.

I find that modern cars give a sense of safety that in reality does not necessarily exist, by this I mean that my wife has a Citreon C3 and at 70mph it feels safe, I have 2006 BMW Z4 and at 70mph you know that although it is probably safer at that speed because of its age it feels a lot scarier even just cruising. Modern cars give the illusion of safety by sound deadening and many other changes. I'll stick with my old Z4 2.5li as its more fun ;)

This driving instructor would *fail* a test if taken in Australia when it comes to roundabouts. If the roundabout has two lanes though it, the outer lane(curb-side) is for turning left or going straight ahead. The inside lane(near median strip in some instances) is for turning right, or going straight ahead but in the latter, only when safe to do so. If coming out of a roundabout you're on a dual-lane, you move to the left as there is sometimes a sign which says "Keep to the left except when overtaking". As to changing from outer to inner lane through a roundabout, this is where you "straighten the curve" as much as you can safely do so.

One thing this highlights is the appalling state of UK roads these days, due to lack of maintenance. If Ian ‘failed his test’ as his manoeuvre was considered dangerous enough to be a risk to other road users, this says to me this badly marked road is dangerous due to the markings not being maintained correctly. Our local roads in West Yorkshire are the worse I’ve known in 40 years of driving: signs that can’t be read due to overgrown trees, road markings such as stop lines at traffic lights, yellow boxes, keep clear signs near totally worn off, variable speed signs on motorways not working, traffic lights out at junctions, you name it and that’s before you look at the state of the road surfaces with terrible repairs, worn out surfaces and pot holes bad enough to cause serious damage to your car. They are getting increasingly dangerous. Why exactly do we pay all our road tax again?

Just took my license in Greece, and it lasted 10 minutes in a small quiet neighborhood. Every turn was directed. Had to do one parking and for some reason, back up around a corner, as well as one theory question. While driving at the school, and during the test, you're not allowed to go above 40 km/h and so naturally, you never get to practice on the highway. You get to drive to the testing areas (so for me that meant some city driving). In reality though, I was told never to go above 30 km/h during training, so that I would be ready to do 30 km/h during the test, as apparently the examiners were "nervous about speed". Feel lucky I drone independently with my mother daily for three years in Sweden many years ago (don't ask why I never took the exams) as it prepared me well for driving in the real world (drove long distance, big and small cities, in every season and type of weather, with and without trailers as we moved a couple of times, too), and especially here in Greece where you have to focus 200% considering all the drunk and improperly taught drivers (many until a few years ago at least also just paid to get it without an exam). Still, it is interesting to come back to this channel and watch other learners. It gives a good perspective on how people act in traffic and why, and it's a good reminder that there is much to learn even after getting the license, so the car next to or in front of you might just be a new driver - you never know. As I also got my unlimited license for motorcycle, it helps even more. Well, to be honest, motorcycling also helps with driving a car, as I now naturally 1000% always check my blind spots. It becomes second nature coming from a bike, as if you don't, you might as well be dead.

Funny because things like him going over a very worn out line would be a fail yet every single day I go out I see multiple drivers on their phone, no idea how big their car is, not indicating (or indicating when they shouldn't) and observations are almost comically lacking. If you have been driving for 30-odd years without smashing cars up you've probably got a decent idea of how to do it. If you've passed first time and wonder why you've had three crashes in less than a year maybe not so much. I think the difference is in quotas. When there were none there was no pressure to pass borderline students. Now it seems like they just have to keep turning up and sooner or later they get a pass regardless of how poor their driving is.

I find many of the concerns to be unrelated to evaluating a person's driving ability The lack of headrests is certainly an issue when considering potential injuries in an accident however it has no bearing on evaluating one's driving ability Situational awareness and speed appropriate with conditions are I believe far more important than a lack of headrests Motoring can be both safe and enjoyable If we reduced the speed to 30kph we could cut fatalities to almost nothing How many people are in favor of such a change I am betting not many There is a balanc3 and I find the entire suggestion that the aforementioned vehicle is unsafe for a driving test based only on its age and dated technology absurd

Read what you said again. A driving test is usually for people who may or may not be qualified to drive, meaning the likelihood of an accident is slightly higher. With no modern safety tech, what could be a minor hiccup could end up in injuries in a 40 year old car.

Roundabouts? If I am aware of no vehicles in danger of being hit, I will cut across marked lanes and take the racing line as it where, when safe to do so, but if not, I will always follow the road markings. Some of the spiral roundabouts do not make sense and in some instances, I feel that following them could cut up some people who do not know how these spiral roundabouts work and cause a crash. Observation is key, if it is safe then do it, if not don't and if you are not sure then just follow the road markings ;)

Interesting, and a fair look at Ians current driving skills. We have the same up here in Blackpool with faded lines, so it isn't fair to get you to get you to follow a line you can't see properly, and the only way round that is local knowledge. A fail on that isn't really fair, but that's how it is. (I am an instructor also). Their are 2 requirements for cars on the test, a head restraint and all round visibility. The DVSA decided a smart 4 2 was not suitable, so 20 years after it's introduction, DVSA decided to add it to their banned list for cars on test. Interestingly, you can use a panel van on test (if you call first), although I have not done that for a pupil, or ever see anyone take their test in a van. (Why the ban on some cars when a van clearly does not have all round visibility ?) Anyway, if you (Ian) are ever near Blackpool and want to test the worlds 1st hybrid SUV (A 2006 Lexus 400h), let me know, I also have a brand new Sandero, I know you have tested the previous model.

Interesting, the test has changed a bit since I took my test in 1982. No emergency stop? I suppose ABS has largely taken the skill out of those. No 3 point turn? No reverse round a corner? There was also no following of signs back in my day, only instructions. Some years ago we did have a go at the hazard perception test at a BSA Owners Club meeting and nearly everyone failed!

I think they must be fairly recent changes! I passed mine about 6 or 7 years ago and I had to follow signs independently but I also had to do learn turn in the road and I’d learned reversing around a corner and emergency stops too!

At Last, a proper driver. No sitting at traffic lights with the clutch depressed and the car in first gear. Using neutral and the handbrake. A man who knows (probably with painful experience) how to minimise clutch wear and tear.

Only time i sit with clutch down in first is when i stop at a set of lights i know doesn’t take ling to change but 99% of the time i’m in neutral

What was illegal about it out of interest? Have the rules changed, admittedly a long time ago (1991) but I passed my test in a 20 year old car Good vid, I’ve a 2cv so was waiting for the gears and the window 😂

doesn't meet some of the rules for a vehicle used on a real UK driving test, one of them being head restraints apparently

@@RWL2012 not sure how I get that? Has it changed or least rules were it had to be roadworthy.. ie tax, mot and insurance… Not sure headrests are making anyone’s driving better or safer 😂

17:07 Even on a left only turn lane, would it not be beneficial for say a pedestrian waiting to cross the exit road to realise that a car is coming? It may not be clear to them that the lane is only for turning left?
