Sergio Rodriguez-Castillo Dissertation Defense
From the dissertation abstract: In the late 1950s and 1960s, the therapeutic potential of psychedelics was widely explored, resulting in the publication of numerous books and research papers. However, between 1966 and 1971, psychedelics were gradually criminalized globally, leading to a near-total cessation of research by 1977. Over the past 30 years, attitudes have shifted, and today, amid a psychedelic renaissance, interest in these substances has resurged. This renewed interest has spurred the creation of multiple training programs for practitioners, yet there is no consensus on what these programs should include. Consequently, existing programs differ significantly in length, content, depth, breadth, and objectives. There is an urgent need for clear guidelines on what comprehensive training programs in this expanding field should comprise.
This dissertation seeks to address this gap by employing a pragmatic philosophical worldview alongside qualitative, comparative, and theoretical research methods, a naturalistic stance, and a constructivist grounded theory methodology. From a pool of 80 reviewed programs, 16 were selected and analyzed in conjunction with the principles of integral education and relevant literature, leading to the development of a map for training psychedelic therapists. The emerging theory, in the form of an integral blueprint, consists of 15 robust and strategically sequenced categories-plus 60 second-level topics and 265 third-level components-that integrate and systematize the data from the reviewed programs, supplemented by the application of integrally informed metrics and the delayed literature review. The resulting blueprint, consisting of carefully organized content areas, may serve as a template for developing new programs, a benchmark for evaluating existing and emerging ones, and a tool for aspiring guides to assess and choose between competing training programs that best cover the different aspects required to train practitioners integrally.
