If you had the time, and since this plugin appears to be at the high end of the "auto-mixing" market, I would love to see you mix a track yourself, then get Neutron to do it's version, and then compare the two with commentary on, for example, the main moves you made, the main moves Neutron made and obviously whatever issues and observations arise from the comparrison.

My most recent track that I'm going to be uploading in a few days was damn near completely mixed with Neutron 3. I did a complete mix before I got it. Then I started over with using about 95% Neutron 3. I will say that my first mix was better, but only slightly. And with the difference in time, I felt I was able to compensate for the tonality difference of the track when mastering it. With me it was days to mix (I'm slow I have a traumatic brain injury, haha) using LOTS of different plugins vs a couple hours to "auto-mix" (with tweaking obviously, haha) using almost all Neutron 3. I kept a saturation plugin on my guitars from the first mix that I liked, that Neutron wasn't quite getting me towards. But I still don't really know the ins and outs of Neutron yet. And obviously delays/reverbs/amp sims/etc. (all the stuff Neutron doesn't do). I have to say Neutron is DEFINITELY my favorite mixing tool now. Izotope is scary amazing at what they pull off!

I was and early adopter of their spire studio.. firstly, amazing customer service, but lets get beyond that, alot of their products are in fact as walking the snake oil line. I like you how you put it. I really hoped something like this would work better, because if Im a musician first, and secondly a producer, I might really want to put those features on auto-pilot.. the fact of the matter is this entire concept is flawed from the beginning. if you are using algorhyhthms to force your mix to be within constraints of normalness is pretty much garunteeing it sounds like everything else. I like a unique sounding mix.. and not just generic sounding.

After the autobalancing in all reviews I’ve seen still some changes had to be made to make it just right. So it’s not completely automatic (thankfully) and is just like the track assistant more of a starting point. Especially since sonic balances might change through arrangement differences in a song making adjustments needed antways. Seems to work quite decent indeed, thanks for the clear review as always.

I've had this plugin for a bit. Shelled for advanced. I find balance to be complete garbage. Track enhance is hit or mis and mostly miss. The plugin as a plugin full of tools is actually really good though. The eq is one of the nicest I have ever used and that includes pro-q (excludes hardware though obviously). So my thoughts are: plugin is great, automatic features don't work well at all.

I own Ozone and Neutron, but never use it. I personally believe when you're making electronic music with the best possible sound sources, these tools give you the impression you need to 'fix' things that aren't broken. I can imagine it's very powerful when you're recording real instruments under less perfect conditions. But if your library is recorded in Air or Abbey, I will not touch it and trust the legendary engineers who recorded them.

Do you think masking is more dependant on the genre of music that is being mixed? hi ! I'm a sound enginer myself (mostly hiphop/trap/dancehall/Maloya/Reggae, styles with lots of low end energy), and i tried to mix a metal track a few months ago for a client. And that was a disaster ! the client didn't like it AT ALL ! He wanted something more "blended" aka less defined, more muddy, with agressive guitars and loud lead vocals. I guess the mixing genius (i'm not one of those) can adapt to any style. Perhaps okay for inexperienced engineers. Want to change the "focus"- gee whiz-- make a track louder, how complicated is that, good god. I do like the mixing assistant in Ozone for mastering/mixdown however. You can get a quick idea of what you may be missing, and then either use Ozone, or replace the components with other plugins. Visual assistant- totally ridiculous- mixing should be an AURAL thing, to interject visual information is not only unecessary, but clogs stuff up.

What if I want to unmask my vocals or guitars to all tracks? I am worried about masking from any track When I check for masking, is there a way to put neutron on one track and compare it to all tracks? I don't want to get a CPU overland. What if I bus all the other tracks to one aux track and compare the a neutron track to the total mix? Like the vocals to every other track? This should unmask that track. Could I do this another way.? Thanks Any help would be so helpful. Stay safe from the Corona virus. I have mixed many of my songs .but i feel like my mixes are so muddy. I would love a thorough review of Neutron 3. As an owner of most Izotope products, and admirer of RX, Ozone, Iris, and Trash, I have come to the conclusion that all the “smart” “advisor” stuff is snake oil. Especially when compared with stuff from Sonible, Oeksound, and the Gulfoss guys. My worst disappointment with my Neutron 2 Advanced was when I placed it on a track and let it do its “advising”. I accepted all its recommendations and inserted another Neutron after it. I let it do its listening and, OH!, it recommended exactly the same settings that the previous instance was already implementing!!! This is not A.I.! This just identifies what instrument it is listening to (I could have told it!), and then recommends the same preset! SNAKE OIL! Please try this test! (Also bad is that N2 was very CPU intensive, which Izotope admit and say they fixed in N3, so we get the “benefit” of an upgrade price of “just” us$149!!. Really disappointing coming from this company.) Unless you convince me otherwise with a good review, Neutron (and Nectar, for similar reasons), will be out of my list. Thanks!!

people are obsessed with spectral shaping because on paper, it seems like the quickest way to hit a reference like balance for a commercial mix without having to go backtrack your entire signal chain for where those changes were to actually happen. it comes with loads it's own problems obviously. it's sometimes what producers end up doing when they're working on projects with no budget for an engineer and very, very limited time.

I'm with you almost 90% of the time in philosophy and weighting - i.e. how you think. I tend to revert to basic tools, because I know exactly how they work, and I'm wary of "auto" and sensing stuff. But I'm sitting on the fence with "spectral shaping". At first, I thought - that's just EQ and compression. But it isn't - it's a real-time reactive EQ (in most implementations) and maybe some of them are doing real-time reactive compression (not sure who is or isn't). But even with the case of the real-time reactive EQ, that's clearly better. I used to use matching EQ's as detection meters (never as a final EQ), until I realized that a static EQ match is just too inaccurate for a moving piece of audio. But I think maybe spectral processing is going to get us to new places. It's still just a tool, and one best used by a conscious decision maker. I just generally find I can get most things done with EQ and compression. Great review though, and I love this channel.

If izotope can develop an AI algo to control other company’s plugins that would be very interesting. Otherwise it can never compete with real mixing engineers. As real mixing engineers pick EQ and compressor and other Fx with heavy colours to mix their tracks, plugin emulation like 1176, Fairchild, Pultec etc are the key to make a recording sounds lively and compelling. iZotope Neutron 2/3’s EQ and compressor and exciter are so colourless that they can only make a track sounds clean, but not pleasin to ears. If you are a musician wanna do rough mix to ur music, instead of buying Neutron 3 u should buy some video tutorial of basic mixing and mastering and do the rough mix with ur stock plugins. Once u grab the idea u can buy some cheap but famous Waves plugins (SSL E/G channel for example). I believe u can make a better mix than Neutron 3 in a long run

@@benbenzon But it's not just Sculptor -it's also performing dynamic EQ, static EQ, excitement, and multiple levels of compression if necessary. Honestly, if Neutron can make an ideal clean mix, and then you get to have all the fun coloring it up - I say again, what's wrong with that? It's like a car manufacturer arguing that no no no, hand-painted cars are better... riggggght. Do you know how many paint flaws, excess paint (and weight!), and cost would be added if people had to paint the cars by hand? Instead, some designer gets to have fun in a nice cool room somewhere, design the model of his dreams, and make it available to the masses via the robot assembly line. You're really saying that a good mix requires a human to listen to every EQ move, every compressor tweak, etc., across all 10-100 or more tracks on a mix? Isn't there a strong argument for ear fatigue, and how much nicer it would be to come in to the mix with a baseline already set? (a process which many top pro mixers already do, by the way - they have their lackeys low and high pass each channel, set up a rough mix and all their chains that they have been trained to do - by the time the master sits down, he just hits play and starts his true personalization/coloring of the mix)

5:15 i would like to see you do a video on what clashing vs no clashing sounds like with different instruments such as guitar and piano, synth and rhodes or something. im sure you would figure it out well and explain greatly. but i hear this term so often and i fear i am not paying attention for it and thus am getting a poor mix because i dont know what i dont know im looking for 😅 ive looked into it as much as i belive i can and still feel uninformed about the issue in whole. if you could go in depth about it more in the future id love to watch it!

i don't think izotope ever intended for people to hit buttons and not use their ears - i think the assistant thing is only really intended as a potential starting point.

I've never been overly impressed with Neutron 3. Demonstrating how to do a mix entirely with Neutron 3 would be great because there must be something I'm missing

I would like to see the full mix. I have been awaiting your review. I purchased this and am blown away. I had a couple of tunes that I had difficulty with then applying Neutron 3 found a much better mix.

The music bizz is already struggling. A. I is fun now, but in years it put most musicians out of job. The future of A. I will be that it will write custom songs depending on the listeners need.

It seems like it’s just a minor update to Neutron 2, should have been a free (or very cheap) upgrade for people with Neutron 2 already, not a whole new fee. Cancelled my subscription to Neutron 2 with Splice, not keen to buy new thousand-dollar software every year - I’d rather invest that money in hardware or Softube products.
