Dave, Thanks for sharing this. Yesterday, I celebrated my 78th birthday. If my Mom were still with us she would be 108. My mother always encouraged my love of music. The best gift I could give her were cassette tapes of music she loved. A lot of it was classical but she also loved Jewish music. I cannot remember the conductors but some were crossover from classical to "pop." Anyway, this was a wonderful addition to your many, many videos. Much appreciated.

Wilmington, Delaware? I hope you had a chance to see the incredible Phillip Wykoff watercolors which used to reside at Wilmington`s country club. Our band played there a dozen years ago and I was so entranced by the supremely detailed work that I later on brought my wife to the club to see them, as well. They were worth the 3 hour drive.

Thank you for this video. Glad to have met the supreme cause of this channel, one that has taught me how to become a better listener, and critic, of records I listen to, in addition to what I think is even more important, namely how to look at musical compositions and understand their structure and significance without having much knowledge of detailed music theory.

Hi David, thanks...I enjoyed so much this interview with your lovely Mother!! It kind of brought me memories of my beloved mother who had some recordings of classical music, by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Eddie Grieg, Manuel de Falla... and I should mention too Die Fledermaus Overture, conducted by Ormandy... I rediscovered those records when I was 16...and got me interested in Classical music...Also, My dad loved J Strauss Jr's Waltzes and Chopin's Polonaises...both Mother and Father also loved Jerome Kern music, as played by Kostenaletz...O tempora...cheers, GV

This is such an enjoyable chat and I drew some parallels with my own early musical experiences. My love of music came largely from my mother, born in 1929, and who therefore grew up with music mostly from the 1940s, 'though she also remenbered some music from the mid-to-late 1930s. As a child I heard her sing some of these pieces, and I listened to them as recordings at home too, so they became embedded in my mind as much-loved melodies. Years later as an undergrad., I used to give one of my university's staff a ride into work every day and, when one of these songs came onto the radio, I'd occasionally sing a few lines. Being younger than my parents (and therefore a fan of 1950s music), he was amazed that I knew these 'old' songs. Although I now tend to listen mainly to classical works, I still enjoy the 1930s and 1940s music I learned thanks to my own mother!

So I can now quit pestering you about getting your mom on a video! Thanks to you both for sharing some screen time and for letting us get a little more history about this person who was such a tremendous influence on you--and obviously not just on your musical development. You both seem to have the same open, curious minds, the same breadth of interests and a directness of expression. Sort of uncanny. More than anything, this confirms what I've always thought based on all your family references: it was just a whole lot of fun growing up with the colorful & stimulating personalities of the Hurwitz household. Thanks!

Thank you both for sharing! Wonderful to see the love, respect and admiration you both show for each other ❤ I'm not sure if my memory serves me right, but I somehow from a story of Dave's in one of the earlier vids (during lockdown, I think) have an image etched into my mind of Ma Hurwitz vacuuming with Brahms' 1st symphony on the turntable, blasting at full volume (if its a fig of my imagination or a rather free embellishment on the household chores, it's never the less a wonderful image! 😉)! The best wishes for both of you to keep going on! 🙂
