ridel149, Thanks for you video. It is very informative. Gibson should really consider you as their spoke person, you sure have the presences for it. I do agree with you about how chambering does enhancd the tone quality and sustain of the Les Paul. I was very weary of the chambering, but after playing a couple of the newly designed Les Paul standards, I'm glad Gibson has implemented it. You'll get purist out there that will say otherwise.

one important thing got left off.. the bridge and the stop bar tail piece are tonepro locking type so when you take off the strings they don't roll off and ding the finish.
@DelHollowProductions

I respect your difference on the locking jack. It can be a hassle at times but I like it. I like not having to loop the cord. On the bridge. I didn't mention it because (and this is just me) ..aaah it aint no big deal. I don't change a lot of strings (this is Ian's LP) but when I do, I do with it laying flat, bridge up - like forever and ago. I'm a pro Gibson guy but I can't buy their position that setscrews help the sound. I believe there's already enough down-pressure on the bride for that.

What is slick about Ice Tea is the lighter color stain on the mahogany really shows the grain. I don't know if you guys have ever seen it but the place I got this on for Ian (Sweetwater Musical) has a Guitar Gallery where when they get guitars in, they unbox them, take a few high resolution photos and then post them w/the specific SN. The cool thing is - you can actually see the guitar & not a stock photo. The thing is, I don't know if it is still there but they had an Ice Tea. GORGEOUS!

Excellent video! Great job of pointing out some of the major upgrades on the 2008 model. I am currently in the process of buying one of these, (and I'm getting the Desert Burst as well...) and you're video has helped me make my decision. I was dead-set on buying a vintage Paul until I played one of the new models. The new neck profile, the locking jack, and the locking tuners sold me on it... as well as the fact that it's much lighter than the traditional models, and sounds just as good. Thanks!

I don't know about their (Gibson USA) shop floor arrangement (I'm not an Industrial or Manufacturing Engineer) but when you rework a production line, you generally have to shut it down - that is work stoppage. Reconfiguration and work-flow must be considered in any new layout. Some parts of the existing line may not be readily movable such as NFPA 33 paint & spray booths or solder vapor capture/vent. Fitting in PLEKs may require parallel flow or simply more space or capital than is available.

Three thoughts to share 1) Gibson USA has a video on their website showing their production Plek process. I'll admit, this is the first time I've seen simulated stringing of the neck. 2) Bob Furlong told me Sweetwater has their new Plek machine in now.I don't know what the charge but I think old Marty can re-fret one of your old LPs and now, just might be able to Plek it after. You'd have to call to find out.

They work just like regular pegs - except that you turn the thumbscrew on the backside and it pinches the string which is fed through the peg's hole. That way the string cannot creep and that way, you don't have to wrap a bunch of rounds to add friction between post/string enough to keep from creeping. One round is plenty. Restringing gets faster.

Gibson started actually making them early in 2008 (judging by serial numbers) but released them Aug 01 2008 after Summer NAMM (which was held last year in Nashville by coincidence - like 3rd week of June). This year Summer NAMM will be back in Nashville in July at the downtown convention center.

So our older featherwieght tailpieces are now treasured for tone. With that thought, i have gone further from the additional weight of locking cast tuners. I have used conversion bushings and put original style kluson/tulip style tuners on my les pauls. I'll stick with my 73 and 75 deluxes.

The Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts area has some interesting trees. While not New England, upstate NY and PA also beautiful. If you do get down here some time in the fall, east Tennessee in the Smoky Mountains right at the color change is gorgeous. I hope you like it here when you come.

My friend, I thought you should know that after viewing your video review of the 2008 Les Paul Standard in August 2008, I got so excited that I ordered the guitar in an Iced Tea finish. It was subsequently built on August 10, 2008. Because I live in the UK, I didn't receive it until end October 2008. So, I've had the guitar just over 2 years now, and I am so thrilled with it! I often think about your review and should have thanked you at the time, but I've been too busy playing! Thanks!

The neck's cross-section is different, the body I think is the same outside but each is still hand sanded after 3D routed. The neck joint is bigger in the 08 so there may be a slight diference there - but externally it is the same I think.

I've never really been all that impressed by les pauls, and before you ask, I have played one, my uncle has had a standard ever since I was little, but they always felt too heavy and unbalanced to me,not to mention the price being a little crazy in my opinion, but I have to say these new ones look fantastic,I saw one in person and was just like "oooh" lol but I'll always be a strat guy, and that said, I'm waiting on my White/maple American standard arriving! :)

@11harrison11 - They are a local company and I try to support them. Yes, like so many companies they seem to have had a period where they thought the name was all that mattered. I think the company has learned you have to keep working 24-7, 365 to hold on to your tradition. They had to loose some colors and really look inside and discover what they wanted to do.

I think Gibson studied on what to change and what-not for a while. I think they did a great job. Some may still like the the super-fat tone of the 57 Classic Humbuckers in the Traditionals while others like the massive feel of the original solid bodies pulling that guitar strap deep into their neck or even the neck profiles (some have bigger hands). No one guitar can truly be perfect for everything and every style but the '08 seems to me to be geared to drive right down the middle of the road.

I wholly agree. I have a 2008 Iced tea burst Les Paul Standard (premium top) and I have to encourage all guitar players to do what it takes to acquire one of these. Yes. very close. the majority of a guitar sound comes from the pickups. the "system" (everything else) does have an impact because it holds the strings and pickups in relation to one another. The guitar electronics, capacitance of the guitar cable, impedance of and amplifier also have a big effect. But [in my opinion] the single largest, most important thing to the sound is... on any guitar... are the pickups because... for any guitar "the system" is what it is. The pickups can change.

I bought a honeyburst 08 standard 2 weeks ago. This guitar is a dream. Yes, it does sound different, but it sounds awesome. I own an epi LP. You are kidding yourself if you think these guitars in the same league. Check the fret wire on the epi :-( If you want a standard and can't afford it, be patient. You won't regret it.

You forgot to mention that the bridge and tailpiece are not the same as years past, but are the Tone Pros Locking Tune-o-Matic Bridge and Locking tailpice. These help keep guitar in tune when changing strings and help sound and sustain because they're securely locked in place. And I don't entirely agree with the locking chord jack being a good "feature" though. Everything else looks awesome. I've played it and it sounds and feels great, nice low action and no buzzing.

You mentioned the Gibson USA frets. I like the way Gibson takes the binding up over the edge of the fret and smoothes them on down. It feels super smooth - like the neck is all one piece. No sharp or rough spots. We don't have an Epiphone LP in house but the last one I held only had the binding to the fretboard's edge. The fret's edge itself was exposed. It is a small thing. And to that same sentiment, the studios don't have any binding at all and have the thicker 50's style neck.

The differences between the Standard and the Studio are, that the Standard has a lot of new features and that it has Assymetrical neck, and it's got bindings, or what it's called. I'm from Denmark, so I'm not sure if I write perfectly. And no, it's not available in Alpine white.

Cool. I drill holes in pauls often. It's really no big deal as lacquer is easy to drill through (with a good sharp bit). Polyurathane on cheaper guitars is another matter though because it fractures. I think Gibson needs to lessen the prices of their axes in every way possible without skimping. The pickguard as an option would be one way, but they typically don't consider stuff that makes good sense in Nashville.
