Great overview of the state of testing and the direction we are going with Y DNA testing. The talk has reinforced and refined some of my own ideas and added new information for my research and project members. The conclusions are very similar to what is my current advice to my project members. I recommend testing to or upgrade to Y-67. If they are getting a reasonable number of matches there is usually many who have detailed SNP results. Then I or they can review those Y matches for their current SNP results. If there is a significant amount of SNP variation in SNP results, the SNP Pack from the discovered SNP library will reveal a SNP that can more closely group the tester with relevant matches. In some cases, a specific SNP stands out within a surname or surname lineage grouping. Then an individual has an option to test a specific 'terminal' SNP or get the complete review through the SNP Pack. Big Y results are contributing more SNPs and options. With at least some individuals and project members ordering Big Y 500 and now the BigY 700, there will be additional SNPs available in order to get closer to the current era. This can further refine the most recent common ancestor and permit more accurate dating. It's a great time to be testing for these discoveries when not so long ago we were more limited by genealogical record brick walls.

My Haplogroup and BY101802 share a common ancestor (IJK-L15) that is estimated to have been born around 44,000 BCE. You both have different Royalty connections: House of Stuart and I have House of Bjelbo.

My Haplogroup and your I-BY121051 share a common ancestor (I-M253) that is estimated to have been born around 2600 BCE. We both have a connection to Pete Rozelle and Pruszcz Gdański.

In fairness in mid-2021...I just picked out one of my y111 matches at a GD of 10 and ran the TiP and it is now predicting 95% at 20 generations...fwiw. It would appear FTDNA has made some adjustments to the way TiP calulates its predictions. ps 01:38 He mispoke saying "unreliability of SNiPs" when he intended to say STRs... just to avoid any confusion, go with the slide..;)

hi, FTDNA surname project recommended two SNP tests, should I take or go with Big-Y?

Can a SNP only be discovered when there are two testers with it?

Discovered singly, confirmed with two. At least that is my understanding so far.
