Oh, and for some reason I got distracted when talking about the rolls for Vichy/Free French territories. Corsica had become Free French, and THAT'S why all the fighters/bombers could come by and destroy the Italian fleet - they could land in friendly Corsica. Cheers!

Finally someone does a video on this game! I'm in Prince Rupert. Three of us are probably going up to Prince George in August to play General HandGrenade. I see you're in Abbotsford. that's not too far from Prince George hmmm. I've got the 36x72 version of 39. Will probably play that for 4 days. Two games two days each. One as the allies and one as the axis. Great video. Germany is way bigger on this map. A bit small on the 36x72 lol. We populate French Indo China and Saigon. One man in French-Indo China and two men and a fighter in Saigon. sometimes it makes a difference one way or another. How many in your group? We max at 6-8. Anyway can't wait for the next one!

Sounds like fun! Have a great time! Smart of you to set aside 2 days for each game, as we will start at 8:00 or so in the morning and go until midnight and usually we don't have a clear cut winner. It's a big commitment, to be sure, but it is so worth it! About populating French Indo China: I like that idea! It was full of people, and it only makes sense that the Japanese would either get the bonus from walking in (Vichy) or have to fight to subdue them (Free French). Not a game changer, and just adds some flavour. My group is 5 or 6 at most for this game, but we haven't really advertised too much as we want to get the core group solid in the fundamentals of the game. Right now I'm the one with the most experience, so "my side" tends to win, just because I am able to see further down the road. I really try to help my adversaries as much as possible, otherwise, this beautiful game becomes rather lopsided. Bo-ring. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Yes. I'm the most experienced player in our group too. I end up teaching as much as playing. I tell the opponents how to beat me so we have a real game. We start our games here at my place @ 3pmish and usually finish @ 3/4AM, and like you without any clear cut winner. We usually get around 12-16 turns in that time.

Hi. Our group is playing probably our tenth game of GW39. Every time we play we learn something new! My question is ‘do you regard the Phillipines as one land zone or three?’ Thanks chat soon.
@TheHilltopPillbox
3 жыл бұрын
Hello Rich, we always play it as a single land territory. Just one roundel marker on it, and since any territories without roundels cannot be used for anything, that seemed to be a logical assumption. Did you or your group have an alternative reason for making it three territories? Thanks!
@richjerstad2030
3 жыл бұрын
The only reason we were questioning it was that Manila could be construed as being on the northern island,the middle island was worth two IPCs and the southern island isn’t worth anything. We’ve always treated it as one,just thought the question could be answered by you or Panzer J. He said the same thing as you. I also concur with that. Thanks!

@@richjerstad2030 Understandable. I like defaulting to the "where is the roundel?" rule. Makes things simpler. Having said that, I think having the Philippines be multiple islands (at least two) is an intriguing idea...

War in the Pacific by Xeno Games has the Phillipines divided into four separate territories. I think it’s a great idea. We may do that for our next game.

Do I need second edition of A&A to play this game (Walmart only sells first edition Pacific)? I know I need the map and rules from BoardGame geek. Great review by the way! Subscribed!

Thanks, Claus! The more units you have - the better. Even the old edition works, and then you just add a spot of paint to differentiate specialized troops and other units. You can also go onto HBG's site to find particular units, and they sometimes have killer sales! If you stick with it, you will grow your collection over time, just like I had to. Eventually, you'll be set! Happy hunting! historicalboardgaming.com

Why on Earth is Fiji a French territory? it was a British Territory.
@TheHilltopPillbox
5 жыл бұрын
That is a good point. I think they were going for "playability" over historicity. With many of those islands being French Polynesia, it was easier to have both islands in one sea zone belong to one power, not two. Plus, it adds a bit of a twist when rolling for Vichy, as those islands could become Japanese, which could impact the game considerably - IF the Japanese prosecute a war in that area, they would have a place to land fighters after tipping a carrier. Just my thoughts, though. I wasn't around for the design phase!

Did the map give you any trouble when you rolled it out when you first had it. I’m about to buy it but I’m having second thoughts because I’m having a hard time believing it’ll just lay on the table, but it looks good on yours.

It's on a pretty sturdy vinyl, which has bonuses and drawbacks. The bonus is that it will survive spills and holes can't get punched in it like lighter stuff. The downside is that it will retain its shape a little longer than lighter grades. I didn't roll it properly once, and it had waves in it for about a week. But, if you lay it flat and put clips on the sides, or heavy books or other objects on the corners, you should be fine!

Is there a reason that Iraq is a different colour from the other pro-Axis neutrals or did they just forgt to change it when they updated to the v2 map? Love the map but I'm not a fan of some of the colour choices for the nations like the netherlands getting their own colour while Poland is neutral white (despite being part of the very first alliance) and Britain, the Commonwealth and Italy being so similar (Wouldn't have minded if it where just Britain, FEC and ANZAC being similar shades to represent their innate cooperation).

Hey Bruce, I really can't answer that question, as I didn't do any of the design work for the map. Likely it was overlooked, or deemed not too crucial to gameplay. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Are the territories big enough in the small map to comfortably place units?
@TheHilltopPillbox
6 жыл бұрын
That's a good question! The "smaller" map is still quite large, and there is a lot of space in most territories. If you are deciding between enough space to place units and having enough space to actually put the map on a table, then I would suggest the smaller map. With all the different markers (if you play with them), it can get crowded on any map, but it's more important to have a comfortable area to play in. If you do find that one army is getting really large, you can definitely use the Task Force markers - very handy! (Yes, they were meant for fleets, but now they have them for armies, too!) Enjoy! www.historicalboardgaming.com/Task-Force_c_438.html

Thank you for this. What confuses me is all the expansions available on HBG. I wonder if they add any balance, fun, realism etc. to the game or is it just for people to spend $$$? Do you play with any of the expansions?
@TheHilltopPillbox
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a tremendous amount of options/expansions for the game, and the one I filmed has a few of them, such as: mines, minefields, hospitals, medics, forts, and coastal guns. The only ones you actually need for the setup is the forts, which you can use other sculpts for until you order the real thing. I used old Monopoly houses for a while. Whatever works and is recognizable, I guess! Like any additions to the game, such as the myriad of units and facilities, you have to be careful to keep the balance intended. Although getting historically accurate would be great, I think the game would be too Axis-heavy because they only lost due to poor leadership, not ability or amount of materiel. Yes, it can be a bit overwhelming to start, but chip away at it and eventually you will have a beautiful game that has extremely high re-play value!

@TheHilltopPillbox

Good question! If an enemy ship of any nation parks in another nation's convoy zone at the end of combat movement, that is considered a declaration of war. (It should be done at the START of a turn, but sometimes people forget that formality...Japan, I'm looking at you... ;)

@TheHilltopPillbox
3 жыл бұрын
Short answer - you can buy the map here www.historicalboardgaming.com/Global-War-1939_c_170.html Long answer (not much longer) is that you will need a number of different countries and units in order to complete the set up. Old A&A games are a good source of cheap units, and HBG periodically has major sales because of mis-coloured units. If you follow on FB, you'll get any updates as they happen. Enjoy!
