I don't really believe that this is the strongest lock in the world. I love my Opinels, but I don't use them really hard, just like I don't use my other knives with other lock types really hard, so I don't have too much practical experience to back up my opinion above. But I have noticed on some of my Opinels, that the Virobloc can get a little loose over time while cutting stuff. You are right, the blade cannot cut through the lock :D but if the blades rocks back and forth, the lock can start to move out of the way. Try to lock your Opinels, then hold the blade on the sides and start to wiggle the blade up and down. For a while, it should not move at all, but after some time, you will probably notice that it starts to have some play.

Some locks that are looser have this issue. However my No.9 and No.8s are rock-solid. It is impossible to wiggle it up and down as the blade refuses to move alltogether. It's hit n' miss sometimes, as you may get a looser lock. But the strong ones are so sturdy, they practically make the knives fixed blades. Each one's different though.

That was a really good review, thanks. I had to laugh when you opened the blade. I wasn't expecting that. I'm also pleased you mentioned the wood, as I was wondering myself. I can see that knife running around plum and damson stones this summer. Always a chore. I've just taken the locking collar off my Nr7 and given it a squeeze. You could actually unlock the knife by wiggling the blade up and down. Whether that motion could be replicated in actual use, I don't know. Just a heads up. Again, excellent review.

Thanks for the lengthy comment! (as always!) I feel like this and the No.8 Mushroom would be a great gift for someone who enjoys cooking!

@@miklospinter Again, in some cases the locks don't twist as far as others. Therefore the blade has more room to wiggle. In other cases the lock is so strong, it is physically impossible to get the blade to move !

Opinel is our main carry. Did some mod to it to make it look awesome but still functional. We fill the extra grove/cut on the handle, leaving just enough for the blade slip in. Use it for mushroom hunting. Only had the knives for 5 years but with all that work & abuse, it look a hundred years old. Grandy call it a Pirate's knife.! Cheers mate.

Hello! I am about to buy my first Opinel. And I am between the n.7 and n.8. It will be the tradicional folding one, not the garlic. Do you thing that is big difference in the size of the blades?

Hello! I'd say the No.8 is probably the best bet for most individuals, but if you prefer a smaller knife, or have smaller hands, the '7 may be better for you. Have you carried any other knives? Perhaps I can find a size closest to that. Cheers!
