I mean, the M16 is an assualt rifle. The definition of assualt rifle is that it fires an intermediate cartridge (smaller than a proper rifle caliber like .306, but shaped like a rifle round so its not a pistol caliber) and is select fire, so you can chose between semi and fully automatic (burst is an option in some). So probably something to do with that. An SMG is pistol caliber, and in the original designation could only be fully automatic, no option to select semi auto, so thats probably true for every other MG. But nowadays the designations are a lot more fussy, SMGs are often select fire, you get PDWs which fire intermediate cartridges and can be select fire but aren't assualt rifles, and LMGs are often select fire as well, just signifcantly bigger than regular rifles, esspecially in magazine size. So bassically, it feels wrong because morphology based phrenology is an insufficient classification system.

It has to do with the caliber, not so much with the weight of the platform.

Okay, so what is the dividing line between an SMG and a rifle that can do automatic fire, but isnt considered a light machine gun? Is it just that theyre not chambered for pistol cartridges?
@icspps

That's generally the line. Pistol Caliber is SMG, intermediate rifle cartridges is an Assault Rifle.

@@preknife there is a key difference between Assault Rifles and Battle Rifles, and that's cartridge size. Assault Rifles use Intermediate Cartridges. Battle Rifles use full sized rifle cartridges. Generally the line is anything around the size of a .308 or bigger is a battle rifle caliber. And the line for Assault Rifle is larger than a pistol caliber, but smaller than a .308. Which mainly leaves the 7.62x39mm, the .223, the 5.45, and the 5.56. Most assault rifles are chambered in one of those. Another wierd thing, to be a true AR, it must be capable of fire fully automatic with a selector switch. But Battle Rifles can be exclusively semi automatic, or capable of firing fully automatic. And yeah, machine gun is a catchall term for a weapon capable of fully automatic fire. Although not everyone uses it that way, since it can be confusing with LMG/MMG/HMG terminology which are often just grouped together as "machine guns."

The bar was an automatic rifle, full sized, similar proportion to a standard rifle and is hampered by a crew of more than 1 The pkm / mg34 were more of an lmg, can be used by one person but often not Mmgs are smth like the dshk Hmgs are smth like the maxim Hmgs to SMG goes from low to high portability and high to low sustained fire At least this is what I heard in one of forgotten weapons videos

In a nutshell, yes. Hmgs in modern warfare are things like the M2 Browning .50 cal-usually mounted on armor units like the Abrams and leopard 2 as auxillary weapons or light infantry transport vehicles like humvees as “primary” weapons. They were also used in anti aircraft roles and were the main guns of most American airplanes during ww2 (which led to pretty impressive ground attack capability compared to other craft).
