Massive 'Bait Ball' Hunted By Marlins 🐟
The BIGGEST Bait Ball You've Ever Seen 😱
These sardines were pictured forming incredible 'bait balls' to keep themselves safe from hungry predators, but it did not stop these marlins from attacking. The stunning images of the natural phenomenon were taken in the Pacific Ocean by Wojciech Dopierala, 33, an underwater photographer and freediving instructor. Snapped over a 10-day-period in Baja California in Mexico, the photographer followed the sardines in search of bait balls and hunting marlins. He said: "A bait ball is when a group of sardines forms a ball shape school protecting themselves from predators. "Our goal was to photograph hunting marlins. "The striped marlin, also known as the Kajikia audax, is a highly migratory fish found in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. "It is known for its distinctive appearance and has a long, slender body and a vibrant blue or black colour on its back - fading to a silver-white belly. "As the name suggests, it has vertical stripes along its sides, which can range from a deep blue to black. "Marlins are known for their speed and agility, capable of reaching speeds up to 80 kilometers per hour and leaping out of the water." The photographer explained that the 'opportunistic predators' feed on a number of fish, including mackerel, sardines, and squid. Wojciech added: "They use their bill, known as a rostrum, to slash through schools of baitfish and stun their prey before consuming it. "Striped marlin are social animals and can often be found in groups or schools, particularly during feeding frenzies or while migrating. "They typically follow warm ocean currents, moving between different regions in search of food and suitable breeding grounds." With the ability to attack at such high speeds, Wojciech said the process of capturing these images was exciting and, at times, 'even scary.' He explained: "Being in the water and photographing such a spectacular fish during the feeding frenzy was very exciting, intimidating, and sometimes even scary. "Marlins striking one by one with incredible speed precision hitting they pray created a spectacular show."
