I buy baskets to look cute at the garden gate. And I have baskets to gather, collect and rotate out when I go back to the garden. Simple. Except that the baskets and some buckets never walk themselves back to the garden. Even the decoration baskets, they are all in the kitchen or garage. I walk back from the garden using my t-shirt as an apron/basket hammock. Every. Single. Time. 🤷♀️😂

Being from Finland, where most gardeners talk about how the summer is over now we're in August, I love watching you start seedlings at this time of the year! I felt like a rebel when I sowed some salads, arugula, mustard greens, mizuna, bok choi, turnips, radishes, beets, dill and coriander from seed last week. Some out in raised beds and some in a greenhouse. Wishing for a warm fall, if nothing else I should get some salad greens!

@@kathys9786 our first frost can be anything from the beginning of September to the beginning of October. At the moment we are having a heatwave of 27 degrees C so it's hard to imagine a frost in two weeks! Time will show and luckily many of the things I planted can handle a frost. Our biggest problem here up north is that the sun is at such a steep angle and our daylight hours are few, so even greenhouses don't really get much warmth in the cold seasons.

The stem side of the elephant ear leaf tells you what kind it is. Alocasia, the leaf cuts back to the stem, forming an 'A'. Colocasia, the leaf doesn't cut all the way back to the stem, so it forms a more gently curving 'C' instead. (Note: This is my own pneumonic. I don't know if it's infallible.)

I've tried something new this year. My garden isn't huge like Jessica's, but it's still very enticing to deer & rabbits! Maybe squirrels too...we certainly have enough of them. I planted chocolate mint (yes directly in the ground) & every few days I ruthlessly cut off a bunch of it and use scissors to snip it to pieces over or around the plants that get eaten. I have had NO pests nibbling this year accept for the Green Stalk that I forgot to mintisize & it became a fast food diner.😯

The squirrels aren't eating from my garden, they are digging and planting willow oak nuts and in the process they dig up things and I battle pulling up the trees and replanting what they dig up. I did see a few Kiko melons decimated in the front yard, so they do find those tasty. I am not overly fond of those tree rats!

Didn't stop my family from laughing though. :) My ginger is not full or tall this year, even though I thought we'd kept up with watering, and also came up late. Some years it just isn't as lush as other years. Could be water, could be our weather gives it fits. Still produces the important stuff every year! Love your two busy body barn cats. We have 29 acres in Tennessee, also starting from the ground up, and it's hard! We spend weekends out there, trying to get the infrastructure in place to move out there. We're both mid-50's and my health isn't great...I usually describe it as running through knee-high water or bailing out the Titanic with a teaspoon. It's gonna take us a loooooong time to actually be able to be there fulltime, and of course there are a lot of things that we just have to put off until we do. You can't put chickens on autopilot for 5 days and just leave. But someday it'll all be worth it.

We love hummingbirds and have 4 feeders, during the summer I have to refill them every day we have so many birds at them. I think we have many generations that return each year because they just seem to keep multiplying. Two of them hang in front of the window of the room my mother sits in during the day so she can watch them, she is 88. Finding the right spot for starting seeds in pots has been a real challenge for me. So far I have failed, we are still having 90+ degree weather here so I can't do much planting for fall yet. I have a covered patio but starting seeds in it has not been very successful since it is on the north side of the house and doesn't get any sun until late afternoon. I think I need to get a small greenhouse for starting seeds in. I love seeing all of the amazing crops you are growing. Thank you for sharing.
