Isn’t it fascinating watching the root growth of our orchids? Yours are doing well and look so healthy. Thank you for sharing!

This was very reassuring to watch. I recently had my first success keeping an orchid alive and thriving long term. What I did differently was repotting to hydro-culture. I subsequently went crazy, buying all the orchids I could afford and converting them to hydro-culture as well, but with varying degrees success. While most appear to be doing great and none have died, some aren’t faring quite as well, which makes me question my actions. Seeing the evidence of setbacks and recovery in your specimens and your calm acceptance of the scars thereof gives me faith that everything will be just fine. I think yours look great and are clearly very happy in their homes. I hope mine settle in as beautifully as yours have. By the way, I also appreciate your thoughts on leaving the “fluorescences” intact and leaving it up to the orchid to decide whether to abort or send out a secondary spike. Once my original specimen finished flowering, I felt obligated to cut the spike. I immediately regretted it. I will refrain with the gal who is currently shedding her blooms. I want to see what, if anything, happens. Thank you for sharing.

The last few months I've really come to understand how much air flow they really do need and my plants are glad I finally caught on to that! I was unintentionally smothering them a little bit as all mothers can sometimes do. 😁

I enjoy your clips and is learning alot.do you let them dry out or always leave a little water in the vase. also,do you have to put the styrofoam?.

So sorry the Phal on the terrarium did not make it. I myself killed my share for lack of air circulation. That is life... Beautiful new root tips on those big phals.

i never cut them margaret... unless they die back... they always can send out new shoots and they take back the energy from leaves/ spikes for food....i just let them be unless they need help... we never know what cycle they are going through from what we do to them.. lol.... so just observation at the moment and food/ watering...

hi Margaret good morning... thank you for the heads up on what your fertiliser methods are....:) this past week i did not fertilise.. but put the Cal/mag solution in the vases for 24hrs.. and then let them dry out for a couple of days and then put a little water over the pebbles...just so the bottom tips of a couple of roots are touching the water for a drink and then moisture is left for them.... after moving them over to this method of wet dry they have put out new roots and tips... and new leaves.. and on one have a new spike coming along... so thank you for the ideas ..as you know the bark just was not doing it for them... i have some new roots starting off on my omcids/ and mitass/ mitons etc.. as they were not hydrating enough in bark mix.... just wondering why you are not going to fertilise each week??? what are you thoughts on this...?? thank you again for all your help along the way... and well done you on the progress of your orchids. have a great day from Australia to you xx

If you think about fertilising orchids what we are aiming to do is replicate what nature would supply them with, which isn't a lot. Nature provides water in abundance, the birds/animals that frequent trees, provide poop! I don't believe our orchids need excessive fertilising, but that is only my opinion, too much fertilising causes a build up of salts and, in fact, can cause the growing tips to turn brown. A little is best, know your orchids and they will let you know if you are doing it wrong. I am so glad your orchids have responded to the way that mine have. Thank you Chris for your encouraging words, always appreciated :)x

I also heard you say one of the "sisters" had crown rot but you saved it. How in the world did you treat that? I mean what did you do to save that orchid?

Hi, I was a bit premature when saying that I had managed to save one of the 'sisters', the rot had penetrated too far down the stem. If the crown had dried and the rot hadn't continued, then the orchid may have been able to send a clone out; it appears as a root, but then forms into a leaf, eventually forming a new orchid. Thank you for your comment.

You said you don't like to disturb the roots but I was wondering how you clean your glass vases and rocks without taking out the orchid? I worry about that. If you don't clean the vases what do you do to prevent alge from forming?

I didn't clean the vases until approximately 6 months, even then I didn't have a problem with algae, but thought it best to remove the dirt that had accumulated at the bottom. Of course, this meant easing the orchid out if the vase, but that process didn't cause any root damage. I placed my vases in indirect light, so didn't have such an algae problem. 😊

@@orchidsgardeninengland1682 You are such a sweetheart and I totally adore your videos. Please keep up the good work. BTW do you have any video's that show "complete" phal adaptation to water culture, regarding such things as putting in water for a bit, taking out to dry, putting back in for a bit, taking out to dry and so on?
