Disagree with Ana regarding the usage of "spaz" in the US. It doesn't matter if Americans are ignorant of what word it derives from. The word is an abbreviation for the outmoded medical term spastic/spasticity, which is a person who has cerebral palsy. Just because its shortened version is now used as a mild slur to describe someone out of control or incapable, doesn't mean the word is still not charged & loaded with its original meaning & connotations.

Americans a have serious problem with not understanding the meaning of the words we use. I don't believe B was out to hurt anyone on purpose, but is commendable she is reacting to feedback on it. "Spaz" has always been an insult used to describe spastic movements and the people which make them, something typical of a few types of disabilities, whether "kids today" know this is why their parents and grandparents were using it, or not. Anyone crying about "we can't say anything anymore"... just wait til someone tells you what that word you keep using to describe being shortchanged or ripped off means. It's also often used in a less obvious, but still derogatory way in the USA etc towards people with disabilities, and so it would probably be best to avoid it. There is no reason to be mad at Beyonce for either saying it or changing it. Culture and habits change slowly and must really be done with empathy when things are said with good intentions.

I told my mom last night when explaining this nontroversy to her, "It has to be a conversation, not a mandate." The left policing words is how right wingers get their feet in the door. Sort of like how Q-anon recruited soccer moms by saying, "Think of the children." People are sick of PC police, and that's an in road for the right. So, you're right, empathy is important. We can't just push people away by mandating their behavior. Having a conversation about it is fine, and hopefully productive, but telling someone how to think or feel is just a quick way to lose them forever.

@@dumisanitsotetsi2272 But the word quite clearly is a problem. Words have meaning and context. I'm not sure how you could be rich and not know that since wrong words can cost money. You wouldn't use derogatory terms for other disabilities and this term is very specific to Cerebral Palsy. Again, I'm not sure how you could be rich if you're incapable of finding words. And another word you may want to reconsider is 'Scotts'. The word your looking for is 'Scots'.

I grew up in 1980s and 1990s. Song lyrics were waaaaay more suggestive and filthy than today. Imagine EVERY song on the radio being as suggestive as WAP. You make it clear that you don’t approve, why you don’t approve and you say “not under my roof”. You can’t control what happens outside but if dirty song lyrics made everyone a degenerate - GenX would make up the entire prison population. For the record, I think the song WAP is dumb. I think it is lyrical gibberish and it is not empowering. However, in the grand scheme of child sexualization - I would say putting 4 year olds in bikinis on the beach or at the pool is way worse. Letting your teens dress in certain ways before they have the confidence or assertiveness to handle the idiots of the world is more troubling to me.

From the northeastern US. Never, not once, have I ever heard the word "spaz" used in a way to refer to someone with a disability. I've only ever heard it to describe someone excitable or distractable. That doesn't mean that people who live in cultures where "spaz" is derogatory are wrong, but it also doesn't mean that people coloring within the lines of the cultural norms of their own society are being derogatory. Words have the meaning we give them, and that changes between cultures.

One generation a word is considered the respectful way to reference someone's condition, next generation that word is "offensive" and a new word is declared respectful. No word ever should be "banned" not publicly not officially not socially. It's the first step down a slippery slope towards totalitarianism. Americans already have this being trendy for more than a decade now where words change meanings on a whim and being totally removed from society, thus disabling anyone from using certain terms in meaningful conversation. Basically dumbing down the whole population and stripping away at social discourse.
