It's rude to Speak a foreign language in public around others, especially when people do not know what they are saying. Look up all the people who have been removed from airplanes because of speaking a foreign language that made other passengers feel uncomfortable. There is a place and time to speak in your native tongue. In public, it makes people ask questions, and report suspicious activity.
@purplenights1
6 жыл бұрын
I would ask you all to google "passengers who have been removed from American airplanes for being overheard speaking in a foreign language" and see how well Americans are eager to have people speak in another language in public. Please, do it. You will be surprised at the number of people airlines have removed because passengers complained! In fact, some of them are well-known in certain circles. The American people generally speaking do not like people to speak in a foreign language in public, and find it "uncomfortable".

So the border patrol officer said that the sole reason that he decided to stop them and question their citizenship was because they were speaking spanish in a state that is predominantly english speaking. I understand that before they decide to take any form of action they think before they question any individual but had they been speaking korean, russian, german, or even jamaican I don't think that he would have stopped them. Ultimately since it is more likely that a Hispanic looking individual who speaks spanish is an undocumented immigrant he decided to question them even though it could be looked as racial profiling. I guess that's just the world we live in right now. If I go to the supermarket and see border patrol agents outside I better hope that my mom does not call me at that moment otherwise I might be stopped and questioned for not talking and looking like an American is supposed to look like.

My uncle, a doctor with VA medical centre and a US citizen, was also asked for his id and he had no problem. I was a foreign student from India and my uncle came 11 years earlier. We were speaking in Telugu and the INS officer asked us politely and we responded politely. He was doing his duty.

THE bus u were riding is very common for border patrol to question ppl when traveling to Buffalo, Rochester, Toronto area

The Border Patrol did nothing wrong here. The SC has said that the Border Patrol has wide latitude in stopping someone based o cause, and Border Patrol rules also support what he did. The Border Patrol just doesn't Patrol the border, they patrol up to 100 miles inland from the border, and they have jurisdiction within that range. These women were 35 miles from the Canadian border. So this agent was well within his rights, and he had no problem with these women recording him. He was polite and appropriate and treated them with respect. He explained why he felt it was necessary to question them, and did so in a professional manner. There was nothing done wrong here, regardless of what CNN would like to portray.

Most Americans don't realize that English is no the official language of the United States, the US has no official language, this is the most asked question on the US citizen civics test. So all immigrants know "speak English you are in America" is ignorant. English became the lingua franca as the founders were English. They had 5 languages on the table to adopt as a national language after leaving English rule and English did not make the cut. They wanted nothing to do with England or their language. They couldn't agree, so the issue was put aside for the time being. The US has amended her constitution many times, but has never added an official language. I do think that it was left unchanged because the idea is to be a melting pot. Go to any US Embassy or Consolate around the world and brochures will state that although America has no official language, speaking some or understanding some English helps as English is the language of the marketplace (lingua franca). Too bad they did not teach this in America. What a shame!
