The name of the place where Çanakkale is located today is called Kale-i Sultaniye in the 19th century. The Greek for the name Çanakkale is Δαρδανέλλια or Dardanellia, which was later translated into English as Dardanelles. From the 1920s, the British began to call Çanakkale Chanak or Kale Sultanie.
The ruins of Troy from ancient times are within the borders of the city. The old center of the province is Biga, and during the Republic period, the name and center of the province was changed to Çanakkale due to the victories won in the Çanakkale Wars. The origin of the name of the province comes from the pottery craft which is very developed in the region. When pottery became synonymous with Kale-i Sultaniye, which became the two symbols of the city, the city began to be named "Çanakkale". In 1452, Fatih Sultan Mehmet built the Kilitbahir Castle in the narrowest part of the strait, Kilitbahir, in order to prevent the Papal State's aid to Byzantium and to consolidate the control of the Dardanelles.
In 1915, it was the scene of the Dardanelles Wars between the Ottoman Empire and the Entente States. The united armies of the Allied Powers were defeated by loss of vehicles and personnel in the naval battle and could not cross the straits. Later, the Allied Forces made landfall. Thanks to the successes of Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal in the land wars, the advance of the Allied forces stopped, the two forces could not dominate each other and the land attack failed.
