As cool as having 4 action bind to one key press it will be extremely situational and this will activate every time you press down or travel up and release as well. Having macro keys are just easier and can be put on independent keys. At least with the analog you might have 2 action and that is on press and bottom out. or on travel up and release. Still I really can't see many options for multiple action on one key at least not more than 2 independent actions. Even if you are a combo users, those will be on cool-down or need a perfect set up every time to execute it just right. Otherwise you'll mill out a few of the skill moves or attack to go into the "perfect chain" execution. For that, you are better off program them into a macro to press one button and execute it.

For me, as a steelseries apex pro owner, it's not about any extra analog feature but about the smoothness of the linear switches, they are miles ahead of any other mechanical switches and I can def feel the difference, even against the other non analog switches on the Steelseries :) Also setting the level on when they actuate is pretty cool, I personally can't stand hyperactive switches (1-1.5mm), they get a lot of accidental presses for me, I prefer they around 2mm :) But your video is valid, all this marketing buzz is mostly useless. The key feel (on the steelseries and I bet on the razer as well) is legit, tho :) And not having hyperactive switches for me is also worth the price, but if you don't care about that then it's not worth getting this keyboard or the steelseries :) Nice video, as always:D

I would argue that Wooting has not been idle since this video went up with all their improvements to both their software and the new Lekker switches themselves. Unlike the other big name corps, the Wooting lads are extremely engaging with their customers and constantly talking about their next ideas and news via their blogs and streams. The Wootility software also has an "open source" online catalog of game profiles ready to go, which counters the "no recommended list" complaint I think. Full disclosure, I'm a pre-order customer for the latest Wooting Two HE, but overall have been extremely happy to invest in such a close company of young entrepreneurs who still have a burning passion for what they're doing.

I actually googled 'analog keyboard' about 4ish years ago and found out about Wooting. I immediately ordered a Wooting One and I love it. I use digital input in competitive shooters because of response time, but in single player games I always use analog. Another thing I love about the Wooting keyboards is that the switches are modular. My WASD keys were getting a little crunchy, so I just replaced the switches. No soldering, not buying a whole new keyboard, I just popped the old switches out with a key puller, and put 3 new ones in. Wooting supplies 3 replacement blue and red switches with their keyboards as well. I think they knew that would happen haha. You can also buy an entire replacement set of keys on their website for under $60USD. So, you buy the keyboard once and you can replace the keys as necessary without having to shill out another 100-150$USD for a new keyboard. With mechanical keyboards being outrageously expensive already, why wouldn't you pony up a little bit extra and get not only optical switches but analog optical switches as well? A lot of people say that this is a gimmick, or marketing strategy, honestly I wanted it before I even knew it existed so I'm sure other people did as well. Thanks again Calder Jeroen and Erik, you guys rock! Wooting Stan out!

Interesting idea, but with poor software and few games that support it fully, I wouldn't go this route. To improve the feel, I would suggest a progressive spring that gets firmer the further you press the key, so that it gives some resistance against the full press. This would help differentiate between a light tap and a full press. Progressive springs can be tiring on the fingers though - I have Halo True tactile switches which max out at 100 grams of actuation force, and holding keys down (especially the shift with the pinky finger) for hours-long gaming sessions makes me want lighter switches. I think this is something that is so personal that finding the ideal spring progression would be difficult for the manufacturers.

basically, to make this thing actually work, they need to change that 75g switches to something around 120g or even more (like 150g super black switches), so u can actually feel the difference between soft touch and actual force applied. same goes for all "cybersport" mice - i cant play shooter games with something less than ~120g weight, i cant be accurate when i dont feel what am i moving and dont know what force should i apply.

Humans can remember pressure much better than distance, therefore a load cell would be much better in this application, and we can see that in sim racing brake pedals. If a company can mimic a load cell (progressive springs) it would be much more successful.
@Mythricia1988
3 жыл бұрын
They don't even have to mimic a load cell, they can just use actual load cell style tech. It can be very miniaturized. Though I suppose there has to be some mechanical movement / give in the switch, else you'll have horrible fatigue when typing on it.

Major factor is cost my guy, proper good load cell pedals costs an arm and a leg 😂
@Mythricia1988
3 жыл бұрын
@@pepperpepsi5644 There's several reasons for that though - pedals using load cells are very expensive because there's a small market and they can happily rip you off, because you have no alternative. The other reason is a pedal is required to survive hundreds of pounds of peak force. At a quick glance, off-the-shelf load cells good up to ~150kg with +/-1% accuracy is only 50$ at single unit prices, a lot less in bulk. Anyway, a key switch only needs to read up to a few hundred grams, tens of thousands of times less than a brake pedal. As a result, you can use very different techniques to sense pressure, including surface-mount chips that cost literal pennies.
@pepperpepsi5644
3 жыл бұрын
Good point, as a student i dont have the industry knowlege to know if there are mini load cells like that out there. But keyboards have lots more keys than sime rigs have pedals so the cost would likely still be atrocious

@@pepperpepsi5644 Yup, definitely would not come cheap! But it would be interesting to see what alternative ways of sensing force an engineering team could come up with. Simple ideas such as just sensing the flex in a PCB has been used before (albeit with very low accuracy).

For some competitive titles it would be better not to have support for analog input and mouse simultaneously, as that allows some unfair advantages akin to cheating. Like silent running in some games. I'm nevertheless surprised that so many single player games were just unable to handle them together. They can definitely be gimmicky and nearly useless, as they were on PS2 buttons mostly. Trying to just aim, not shoot, in MGS2 was at times annoying. But there are also good use cases: in mobas, using the double actuation first to aim, second to shoot, could be useful. In escort quests of RPG games, WoW included, you usually walk either too slow or too fast compared to your npc:s, so with analog input you could sync your speed up. Besides all that, the advantages of opticals are that the switches will last, they stay accurate, and they are smooth. The rest of the keyboard, including the software, better be on par with that, though.

I guess it's an emerging technology. I'd be happy with a keyboard with a tactile point at 2/3rds travel that you could press through for a second function - similar to a Cherry Brown. Although I've never used an analogue keyboard, I see the same problem - too short travel to have granular control, and increasing the travel to increase granularity will make the keyboard feel mushy and unresponsive. But I do see an opportunity for a second switch at the bottom of the key press. There you go Dmitry, you can have that idea. I only ask for 90% of the profit.

I absolutely hated my Huntsman. Just leaving my fingers on WASD, I would press the D key without realizing so I would strafe right all the time.

It would seem to me that analog control based on pressure, rather than distance, would work better. Press-harder run-faster.

The OmniPoint switches are NOT analog, they are hall effect which is another cool tech. Wooting are both Analog and Hall Effect. Razer are ONLY analog.

Wooting is not Hall Effect. They don't have magnets. They are analog just like Razer. Only steelseries is hall effect, but not analog

Glad to see someone else knows what they’re talking about. They may operate differently but at least they have the same advantages.

Kinda... their main selling point today is Rapid Trigger which is amazing but a regular keyboard with "Kill Switch" feature should easily be able to compete with it Kill Switch work in a way which you dont need to lift A/D. the moment you press the other, it immediately moves to the other side

I have the swiftpoint z with analog switches that is customizable close to the level of qmk yet using the analog switches is so difficult that I have never actually used them once

Will admit I'm enjoying my Wooting keyboards. The analog function.. not that useful for games I play but for other actions like Blender to add a bit of analogue noise and action to animation. Main issue is the need to program them for the less popular or small games..

I think maybe it is a good keyboard to play real racing games without actually needed a pedal or that kind of equipment and just depending on finger pressure

Imagine thinking analog controls making games like Hades control better is some revolution of technology and not a clear sign that isometric angles in games are terrible and outdated
