Does CA have any open source tools? I couldn’t find any. It be nice to make AI that was open so that we could make the better. This is something I would like to get into with the Total War series.

That would be a nice open source project. I doubt the creative assembly has a desire to make an AI using machine learning because it would require a complex machine such as a super computer to compute the moves this would mean the game would have to go online. One business opportunity for this would be to buy time on the machine learning computer.

This is the great question that I have as well !!! When I first started playing the game I took Rome and began to learn the basics. There often were cases I wasn't satisfied with circumstances like suddenly Chartage declared war to me right after I declared to soone else war or anything else very inconvenient that I wanted to avoid. I did reload the game returning to the last saved point. But all of the sudden my recent brilliant ploys and plots against the enemy didnt work anymore, the AI moved so ingeniously as if it predicted my move or includes the knowledge from how I moved before the reload and takes that as advantage. I played in easy, but the more I reload I feel the more it gets harder. Does that make any sense??? Before any first reload - I easily succeeded with my initial strategy but afterwards it's like AI takes the upper hand by predicting every move being about to be repeated from previous walkthrough.

If you actually knew anything about machine learning and weren't just regurgitating a term you read somewhere you would know how expensive and unfeasible it is to use the technology in game development in the way you're suggesting.

Great to see some behind the scenes, and explanation of how complicated AI can be. I think all the tools and data extraction is great for balancing, modeling and even debugging. However, I think there is nothing more important than human interaction with the game, as you admitted without actually playing it you will never find the real problems, in pathing, animation delays, other things that impact the visual result of the AI. It is obvious in your games, you need alot more player testing versus AI playing, if you really want to make AI better and more human feeling.

55:16 i think it would be kinda fun if we hade to face a weird army every once in a while. i once had to fight an army of 14 necrofex colossuses on legendary-veryhard and it was plenty of fun. (i think it would be kinda cool if the important ai factions are allowed to have a very powerful army or a doomstack. for example in the history we see kingdoms having some extra special army of elite soldiers or something like that which they send in when ththe stakes are high. armies are usually pretty similar to the point that when i'm going against a dwarf army for example, i can correctly guess 16-17 of the units before looking. but encountering a doomstack or semi-doomstack army would be fun since it'll spice things up and get the stakes higher and make things feel less repetitive. also, i think it would be really good for the sake of making ai feel smarter(it actually is making it smarter) if the ai was allowed to build (direct)counter armies like when the player is sweeping an area with a treemen spam or whatever spams or doomstacks, the ai needs to step up its game and react and not send the usual armies and instead recruit an army that is better suited to fight them.

The amount of calculations needed to be made was way above the amount i had in mind XD. I wonder how far away we're from Advanced Ai with self learning and adapting to the human player in game.

If we would reach that point, the challenge would be much higher than most players would actually want. In every game, the players that go for the hardest difficulty setting are hardly a majority. This implies that such a system would impact only a minority of players, and even those players would struggle and most likely avoid the game altogether or ask for nerfs.

I am starting to notice something in WHTW 2. The AI has fine controls the human player can never imitate. Just recently the AI threaded a single file like of Calvary between the narrowest of places between a rock and engaged infantry. Once behind my line it fanned out and started raging on my ranged line. I had to watch as I was both amazed the AI had the intelligence to do this and filled with rage that no human could do that maneuver! Rage and respect in one breath is a strange sensation, I imagine ancient warriors felt this way often.

the ai did that to me in shogun 2 it took a unit of samurai retainers , made the formation thinner in front of my very eyes and then sent them between two of my frontline units to attack the bowmen behind them , the ai can be quite impressive from time to time , too bad its not consistent with it

Please add geographical conditions and features such as immigration, deportation, massacre, population change and religion to the next games. The country borders of today are always created with these factors. We are also waiting for the new medieval game from you. There must be more natural events. Many wars in history have been won or lost due to natural conditions. There should also be trade routes (silk road, spice road, fur road, etc.). These can be extra income generating and it may be necessary to build a private building to increase trade here.

The campaign AI is fine it's your battle AI That's trash. You guys seriously need to work on Battle AI. You also need to work on battle pathfinding as skirmish units that have skirmish activated will often run into the enemy not away from.
