Borg's resilience and absolute resolute mental strength in the 5th set of the 1980 final was so amazing!

@@jamesb2871 Mats was super in 1988. In the Paris final he was peaking. I think in that match he was aggressive in a way seen neither prior nor afterwards. Totally crushed Leconte, great game.

Hey this is a great program. We don't get here in Australia. Thanks for posting. 35 years ago man. Where does the time go? That 1980 final, not only is the greatest ever final at SW19, but is the BENCHMARK. We may never see this happen again.

Very interesting! I always thought that Borg´s movement was similar to Steffi Graf´s as well, and I definitely agree with Mats at 8:27 that McEnroe was "maybe the most talented we have ever had, in terms of feel in the hand", and also that "Federer, with the balance and the speed of arm, is more talented overall". Pretty much sums it up ;)

Laver also had great touch but a stronger wrist like a squash player and even slightly quicker reflexes. Still probaby the best player inside the service square of all time.

McEnroe had great feel on the volley because he played with a soft wrist and he had quite loose strings.. Something like 49 compared to Borgs strings at 80lbs

McEnroe got so close to the net because of the motion of his serve. Later, Pete Sampras developed a similar rocking motion.

@ Theoriginal Thinker. It was primarily McEnroe's strong legs and fast footwork that propelled him forward so quickly to get as close to the net as he did in his tennis career, not just the fact that he would toss the ball forward on his service motion to get his momentum moving into the court on his serve. Even Sampras at his peak didn't get as tightly close to the net as frequently as McEnroe. McEnroe had the uncanny ability to consistently get inside the service box for his first volley better than any serve-and-volley player in the Open era in tennis.

@@michaelbarlow6610 All tennis players of McEnroe's caliber have strong legs and fast feet. And Pete was a better player than McEnroe. No doubt about it.

@ Theoriginal thinker. Sampras had a better, more powerful forehand than McEnroe and a more powerful serve with freakishly phenomenal accuracy on serve, but McEnroe had a greater diversity of shots in his repertoire than Sampras ( i.e., the drop shot, drop volley, stop volley, the underspin offensive lob, the soft backhand drive down the middle of the court low over the net when the opposing player- such as Connors -is at the net to force the net player to hit up on the volley and to generate all the pace on the volley, and the topspin forehand lob) and McEnroe had a greater diversity of service placement in his game than Sampras. McEnroe utilized the "into the body serve" otherwise known as the "jammer" serve which Sampras completely lacked. Sampras lacked McEnroe's phenomenal touch at the net and feel for the tennis ball. Although many tennis pros at or near the top of men's tennis have strong legs and excellent foot speed around the court, no serve-and-volley player has gotten as close to the net for a first volley as consistently as McEnroe did--not Sampras, Edberg, Becker, Stich. Perhaps Laver and Kramer may have been nearly as adept at getting inside the service box consistently for the first volley as McEnroe but that is questionnable. Despite what many fans think, McEnroe at his absolute peak in 1984 played the highest level of tennis seen in the graphite era. Sampras' level at his best from 1993--1996/1997 was a close second in my opinion. Federer would be third behind Sampras in the level of tennis achieved at his absolute peak. It is unfortunate that McEnroe and Sampras' careers were not precisely concurrent so that tennis fans could have seen both of them at the absolute peak of their prime play against each other. McEnroe has never received the recognition as having possessed one of the greatest overheads in the history of tennis.
