Internal rhyme in the poem COULD represent the fact that the child is still unborn, within the mother's womb.

Straight from the mark-scheme, it also shows lack of power. “rhyme is internal, and linked to repetition: ‘tall walls wall me’, ‘hither and / thither or hither and thither’, which reflect his powerlessness”

"The parts I must play" shows how this child does not want to become a puppet of society, be that through a government imprisoning people with laws, religions encircling people with rules or beliefs or the socially acceptable roles in society, where we seem to make our own choices but are in fact guided by what society wants us to be.

The internal rhyme in each stanza of the imperative and one of the last words of each stanza could mean that the unborn child wants to remind god of the imperative and make it look back on it.

I discovered this poem when I turned 17 and it allowed me to make sense of this world, finally. I’m 52. He spoke to me, and his poems still do. I made a paper copy of this poem ‘A prayer before birth’ and kept it in every wallet I ever had. Louis’s words here transcend time. Every era, every person who has lived on this planet can relate to the two things that speak the most: please don’t make me a stone, or water held in hands that would spill me. It clearly means as I go through life, don’t make so calloused that I no longer feel, but don’t make me so emotional so the world’s terrible events destroy me. MacNeice is asserting his view of how to get through this life in an extremely beautiful way…he wants to keep his balanced humanity so that he can live. His words changed my life and this poem has been my guide. A very wise man whose words are timeless ❤

Actually interesting to note that Louis Macniece was agnostic, not following any religion, being agnostic. In fact, he harbored dislike for religion mentioning that “Religion never left us alone, it was in the home as much as the church, it fluttered in the pages of a tear-off calendar in the bathroom and it filled the kitchen", so the calls of help may not be directed towards Christian God, so to speak, but just a higher level spiritual being Macniece believes in.

I also think that, aside from the sense of isolation created by seemingly the whole world against the unborn child, the juxtaposition of "lovers" with the sense of ridicule in "laugh at me", a "beggar" refusing a "gift", and his own "children" cursing him (children are meant to be innocent and pure, which juxtaposes with cursing) could show how the world is unnatural and there is a reversal of typical roles, suggesting that the world is foreign and alien to the unborn child, emphasising the unborn child's innocence but also the world's descent into madness to such an extent where unnatural things become natural and are normalised.

In the final stanza, I interpreted the meaning of the phrase "make me a stone" as as a gravestone; is this a valid point?
@henrykay5958
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, although I would describe the stone as simply a tool, with no emotion, so they are passive and are given no choice, therefore the child does not want to become this but to have his own sense of individualism.
