Throughout history, various communities and movements have embraced anarchist principles to establish self-governance, direct democracy, and social justice. In Mexico, the Zapatistas in Chiapas, the Magonistas, and the autonomous communities of Cherán, Villa de Zaachila, and Morelos have all resisted state and corporate control, promoting indigenous rights, land reform, and communal decision-making. Similarly, Marinaleda in Spain has demonstrated successful local governance based on collectivism and democratic assemblies since 1979.
Globally, the Jamaican Maroons, Albanian rebels of 1997, and the Frisian Freedom are examples of communities that resisted external domination and established autonomous societies. In China, the Guangzhou Soviet and Shanghai Commune were brief but notable attempts at creating self-governing regions inspired by anarchist and communist ideals. The Korean Anarchist Federation played a significant role in Korea’s independence movement, advocating for mutual aid and direct democracy, while the Free Territory in Ukraine, led by Nestor Makhno, implemented large-scale anarchist organization during the Ukrainian Civil War.
More contemporary examples include Rojava in Syria, which has implemented democratic confederalism emphasizing gender equality and ecological sustainability. In Italy, Spezzano Albanese has a history of anarchist activism, while Puerto Real in Spain was a stronghold of labor unions and anarchist principles. The Strandzha and Saigon Communes, along with the Tambov Rebellion in Russia, represent significant uprisings that embraced self-management and direct democracy. Exarcheia in Greece and Fejuve in Bolivia continue to embody anarchist ideals through grassroots organization and community self-management. The unique cases of Cospaia, Naissar, Kosovo Anarchy, and Bashkorstan highlight the diverse ways in which anarchist principles have been applied to resist centralized control and create autonomous regions.
