These days nobody actually remembers the circumstances under which the star Anatoly Karpov started to shine. It was, in fact, in 1966, when the fifteen-year-old boy was mistakenly registered in an adult tournament in Czechoslovakia, when he was due to play in a junior event... Not only that, but because the weather conditions were bad in Moscow, he arrived to the tournaments three days in, and for that time span had to play two games a day in order to catch up. He scored 11 out of 13 nonetheless, finishing three full points ahead of the second...
Thanks to that incredible performance, Karpov became an International Master. Soon after that, he would get the ultimate "chess blessing" from Tal himself, he would become the Junior World Champion and the major junior chess star in the Soviet Union. From here on, nobody had doubts he would have a scintillating future.
Yet to come still would be victories in the U.S.S.R. Championship, Interzonal and Candidates' Tournament. You shall hear more about it in the next episode on Levitov Chess. An episode you don't want to miss!
