It seems to me that the Mini entered in RTH and the RTH height is measured from the point of start. I guess your RTH altitude was lower than the relative height of the ridge. You were flying at around 400 feet AGL from the home point and if the RTH altitude was set to 300 feet the Minimay descend. But only with the log analysis we can see what happened.

@DronesandBones well the mini did really well today in strong wind. I'm not sure what the speed was, but I had the drone over 100 ft up. I took it over a mile and back, going into a head wind. It slowed it down to like 6 miles an hour at one point, but I still had control. The wind was strong enough that it was making my eyes water and blowing the door's on my truck shut. I still had 50% battery left so I kept flying all the way down to 18% after flying a mile. I would tell everyone that if your battery is low you shouldn't consider pushing this little guy into the wind. Most people are having wind issues with the battery already being low. I'm impressed with this drone and I'm still running it with all the current firmware updates and stock props. If anyone is interested look up wind conditions for Boulder Montana. Of course I was about 15 miles out of Boulder on the road to Whitehall.

@DronesandBones The Mini isn't good with strong winds, that's true. A good tip for that is to start from that side of the location you wanna shoot so you can fly into(/against) the wind at first, so that when you return and wind is a factor, it will be blowing the drone towards you, not away from you.

Not sure what happened here. several factors do not add up. 1: if loss of signal from drone to controller occurs, then the drone is suppose to RTH automatically (which it was already in a RTH mode) 2. During RTH, the Mini will rise (ascend) to RTH set altitude if the mini is currently below that altitude. If the mini is above set altitude, then the Mini will REMAIN at current altitude and RTH. loss of height should not have occurred with out an outside force. Ie wind, battery failure, power failure, etc. You should upload the flight data and check for any errors to see what happened.

From the looks of it, I'd say you kept the left joystick pressed down while it was in RTH mode. That actually tells the drone to land where it is. Correct me if I'm wrong. It may actually be made so that even if you let go of the left joystick, it will still land where it is if you kept it pointing down for a while (a few seconds could be enough). I don't advise lowering the altitude manually as the drone returns home.

You can see throughout the video that you're constantly gaining altitude... starting from 0 and going to 440ft when you're going further near that rock. It's not that noticeable when you're just following the ground up. BUT if you happen to have your Return To Home altitude at anything below 400ft in the drone settings, it will try to get to that altitude and fly straight to you at that altitude. Had you set the RTH altitude to 500ft, it would've returned home above the ground... though when it got above you, it would've been 500ft in the air and veeery likely getting a good bit of wind. So in a situation like this, I think manually returning it is the best option.

The problem here is with the battery, DJI put these Li-ion’s in the mini to advertise a 30 flight time in reality it’s hover time. You flew sticks forward/RTH and the C rating is to low they simply can’t handle it, it’s happened to me several times. If you had cancelled RTH or backed of the throttle stick you should have been able to regain altitude but the problem gets worse the lower the battery drains.

Wow! What happened? I'm intrigued to know why the Mavic Mini landed with 55% battery during an auto RTH? ⚠️😯 Battery failure? Notification error glitch? Low altitude at RTH? It shouldn't drop altitude though and looked like you were well above the terrain, unless it sloped up?😯⚠️ I'm over 3/4 way through, you're video, not quite located the drone yet! My guess is battery failure? Another thought, I always put my phone into 'flight mode' and turn off wifi, bluetooth etc none are required for the Mavic Mini and they will probably cause interference and range issues. Also it's a good idea to clear all your running apps, so just the DJI Fly app is running. It's good practise to clear memory in settings and clear and app cache, which just clogs up system resources and may cause issues with the smooth running of the DJI Fly app! I'll finish up watching your very entertaining video, I enjoy your content delivery and story telling, not just a drone flight here, we're getting a hike, a work out, health and fitness advise as well as learning about the technicsl intricacies of the Mavic Mini and drone flying in general, top stuff! 😎👍

Another great, entertaining and informative video. Thanks! Looking forward to any final analysis that determines why that happened, especially with so much battery remaining. Of course RTH altitude is always figured from the take off point as there is no altimeter. But this is irrelevant in this situation. I remember about 5-6 years ago when I was flying my first Phantom at a high altitude ranch in Mexico and took off with full battery, it came down much like yours did after about 5 minutes. Fortunately I saw where it went down and with help from the ranchers, recovered it from a field where the “toros bravos” were. I put in a new battery and did another flight. Again it came dow similarly after 5 minutes. Later realized the altitude of the ranch was about 8,000 feet and the engines could only support short flying times at such high altitudes.

its not battry failure actually.... the batry critical level is set depends on how far the mini flown from the home point...it uses smart batry...means it automatically spares power for return to home....after batry critical warning...it automatically switch to rth mode....that beeping & voice msg shows it turns rth mode on... u didnot actually controls his way back home...and i think you set rth altitude to very low meters...thats why it crash....

Always turn the drone off first and then the remote. Turning off the remote first can initiate a fail safe mode built into your drone. Some electric helicopters have fail safe mode that will make the heli start up and climb do to loss of signal.

Just to make sure I got it right. You were reducing altitude and lost the signal- it kept reducing altitude while signal was gone? Shouldn’t it just stop and hover if signal was lost? Or is it those 11 seconds - it would stop and hover 11 seconds after signal lose?
@DadRandom
4 жыл бұрын
The drone was in RTH and I was slowly reducing altitude to counter the RTH altitude rise. Out of the blue, the drone nose dives into a landing mode, but still moving forwards. If the drone decides to auto land it just lands. It doesn’t continue RTH. As the drone lost signal, getting too low, it continued to land. Strange.
@wza360
4 жыл бұрын
Dad Random ah, got it. But why it was auto landing, I thought it had over 40 percent battery left, wasn’t it?
@DadRandom

The drone should fly home. With over 50% battery. Only time it should auto land is when below 20%
@wza360

I’ve actually read few articles on advices for drone pilots and one not very common is to avoid Auto RTH - advised always to return home manually, unless remote is dead or signal is lost. It feels that more and more I see examples confirming this. I e if I lose the signal I always cancel auto RTH immediately after getting signal back and come back home manually - in most cases due to close trees or other obstacles, but now got used to it, that doing this manually even if shrouding area is totally clear.
@wza360

Dad Random I recently did a test when I flew above me until 15% - it didn’t auto land - I landed it manually. I was at 350 feet altitude.

Be careful when you fly in a curve. When you hit RTH, it will not come back in reverse and at the same altitutde (I wish DJI would have that feature to come back in the same path only in reverse). The drone comes back to you in a straight line from where it is to where you are, and somewhere in the middle the ground was higher than your original home point.

Could you have had a bad or damaged blade from earlier because it drifted to the right first then gradually went down and I have seen other videos that shows them drift of and things go wacky when it is trying to correct itself. So a bent or cracked single blade can do that. Sometimes storing in the case with the blades being up on the hump in the case san bens then after an extended time.

Hi - I've been flying DJI drones for five years. Haven't lost one yet. It appears to me you have a bad battery. Or you had the smart battery system invoked. Let's talk about the bad battery first. You got a battery warning at something like 55% which means one of your cells is approaching 3.3 volts which would trigger an inconvenient auto-land. And RTH might have saved you. However, voluntarily dropping altitude is not what you want to do in most cases such as this because you can use that altitude to angle the AC towards your home point or at least towards a clearing for a safe emergency landing. So what happened was you lowered altitude, and then it did go into critical auto-land due to the bad cell. Once it goes into critical auto-land, you have a choice of feathering the left stick up to keep it aloft long enough to get it home, or finding a safe place to land. The former choice is a risk because the battery could possibly shut itself off without warning when a cell drops below 3.0 volts. Unfortunately you had no room to work with because you had already dropped altitude. It appears it dropped below the rocks so that you lost signal, even as it was angling down. Then it had a hard landing. IMO, you should check out that battery and it probably needs to be retired. This was not your fault directly - it was the fault of the bad battery, although you might have piloted a better landing by keeping it at altitude on its way home. You should examine the battery for swelling. Swollen batteries are famous for going into auto-land very early and without warning. It's best to retire a swollen battery. If you must keep it, use it only for very short flights. Or for bench work. With the smart battery system, you will get a pop up warning you to fly home now which you can accept or decline. That warning will normally pop up at around 67% at the latest and your app shows you are below 60%, so that's odd. There may be a very good explanation since you can't just hang out at distance forever - the smart battery won't let you do that. Let's say it's a smart battery warning and let's say you accepted it. So now it's coming home. But you then voluntarily lowered altitude. This steals time from the battery, and the DJI smart battery system now has less time to get home than it had before. If the smart battery system believes you won't make it home, it will commence Autoland in a desperate attempt to save the aircraft. But it would give you a pop up on your controller screen. The problem is, you may have had the downlink blocked by the rock. So it's possible you never saw the popup and was unable to respond to it. Therefore, the drone continued its Autoland. The reason it continued moving forward is the uplink was still intact. Typically the downlink is what you lose first in these situations. As a rule, it's best to start home at no later than 60% battery. The battery will burn faster in it's lower half of percent (i.e. 50% is actually less than 50%). Also wind, even a slight breeze, can spoil your plan. Also, critical Autoland will start at 10% battery and there is no way to cancel it. So you want to avoid that if you can. Good luck.
