Fritz is a true honest American born from the family that built and sold Maytag Washing Machines. I met Fritz in the mid 50's when he was going to Stanford and was living in a little cottage in our back yard in Menlo Park. He was always a true and honest person that I remembered having a paper route and driving an AJS Motor Cycle. Fritz took a vacation and I think it was to Japan and when he came back he had broke his leg but still would ride that bike. Fritz Maytag a true honest American!

Just came across this. Anchor was the first brewery I worked in. I now own my own and remember Fritz telling me (half joking) to not get into the beer business if I wanted to be successful. I still use many of his leadership style today running my own shop.

I think many American beers are great, and I think the US is definitely near the top of the stack in terms of innovation, but I think Maytag's opening statement is arrogant to the point of insulting. To say there's untold variety isn't as resounding when you consider the total dearth of beer choice available when the homebrewers were finally unleashed in '79, complete with a huge portfolio of world beers at their disposal. Great job Fritz, excellent beer, but I'd tone down the self-satisfaction.

@1960cad Bud, Miller, Coors, sure. Not Anchor Steam, not any of our great craft breweries. And he is right, you can get ANY style of beer in America. In other great brewing nations, you really only find beers indigenous to that country. They have more beer tradition, sure, but there is far more variety in America, and American micro brewers HAVE contributed to a beer renaissance world wide (wether you are aware of it or not).

great interview, great video. i cannot help but watch this and lament that so many of these 'little breweries' that Mr. Maytag helped to spawn have now given over to chasing trends, with the unfortunate consequence that many of the great traditional beer styles are harder to come by, even from microbreweries. Even from Anchor! Old Foghorn, Porter, even Liberty Ale are harder to find, while their newer, trendier offerings (fruity beers, hazy beers) seem to be more available. And what happened to the Anchor Small Beer? even Humming ale was better than some of the goofy stuff they (and others . . . Sierra for example, unfortunately) now offer. Because so much of microbrewing has been taken over by chasing trends. Unfortunate! These companies seem to think the way to stay relevant is to produce beer for people who don't really like beer (or at least that's all I can figure is behind everything tasting sweet and fruity . . . and 'hazy' . . .) rather than staying true to the beer buyers who helped propel Fritz Maytag and others to prominence in the first place.

@psychokilla6669 Have you ever had an Anchor product? They make flavorful, tasty beers, just like many craft breweries in the United States. Even though most mass-produced American beer is swill, there are a lot of great craft breweries in the US that make products that are just as good as anything made in the world.

@Puabond Safer choice - alternative to alcohol? I guess you mean weed, which has more tar than cigarettes. Tar gets stuck in your lungs and never goes away. That's why lifelong smokers walk around with oxygen tanks.

@megagagnon1 More tar but the average smoker smokes way more cigs than the everyday toker. Thus the marijuana enthusiast does not have nearly as much tar in their lungs. More and more people are making oil or vaporizing which has little to no tar.

94.3% by volume during 2011 in fact (check out the Brewer's Association website). Obviously I'm not talking about those beers. You can make as many Double-Hopped IPAs as you want, it doesn't compensate for a nation's lack of brewing heritage.
@robc5051
6 жыл бұрын
IPAs, sours, lagers, porters, stouts; doesn't matter the style of beer, I'm just glad I'm growing up in a US where "craft" aka good beer is available. As for heritage, I mean that's true, there isn't much heritage, but if you take a style like the IPA, for example, which wasn't very popular in Britain when the US picked it up and started using Pacific NW style hops to create west coast style IPAs, then you're improving on someon else's heritage. I think if you have to fall back on the heritage argument, you're showing a bit of insecurity. Why not just enjoy good beer?

Noone doubts that in the world of small businesses you will find excellency in one form or the other, everywhere. I don´t doubt that you can find good beer somewhere in the USA, just like you will find good clothing accidentally ;-) Fact of the matter though is, the large breweries, those who define the landscape and the, lets call it taste median of a nations´ beer products, produce a lot worse beer in quality, value and taste than in many other nations.
@robc5051

I mean, if you go by that logic, however, then an AB Inbev-owned brewer Jupiler - which is a Euro Pale Lager - must define the taste of the country of Belgium. ignore all those trappist ales and wonder Belgian strong pales and darks. Since Jupiler (owned by the same company that makes Budweiser, which is pretty simiar to Jupiler in character) is defined by this very taste, no? ;)

@littlebier8 Go to NORML (dot) (org) and look in the marijuana health mythology section. Myth: Marijuana is Harmless. Just as most experts agree that occasional or moderate use of marijuana is innocuous, they also agree that excessive use can be harmful. Research shows that the two major risks of excessive marijuana use are: (1) respiratory disease due to smoking and (2) accidental injuries due to impairment. NORML is pro-legalization.
