I noticed that its the exact truck you have, I was worried that not driving a dually would be a problem - you answered that!! also I was on the fence about the Anderson hitch, you answered that too!!!!! nicely done sir, nicely done.

I have the Anderson hitch and love it. I have a Silverado 2500HD and I pull a 42' Sabre fifth wheel. I selected the hitch for the same reason you did. I want to be able to use the bed of my truck. The only problem that I have had is that in backing, I can hit the rear window of the truck. I found that out the hard way. I also can hit the bed rail pretty easily, but that hasn't been a huge problem. The dealer mounted my pin cable on the left bottom side of the kingpin assembly. It actually would hit the bed rail easily. I removed it and moved it to the underside of the kingpin assembly and instead of screws, I used rare earth magnets to hold it. It will move around some but will not come off without a pretty heavy pull. I do like where you mounted your cable. I may try that.

The one thing I would add, is that the goose neck hitch allows more room to get in steeper driveways that might cause the truck and trailer to pivot to a point that could cause the bottom of the fifth wheel to hit the top of the bed. The ball on top of the gooseneck can be lowered or lifted to allow for this scenario. I’ve been using this hitch for many years and have nothing but good things to say. And I have taken it everywhere imaginable. My truck, a 1998 dodge Cummins 2500, handles extremely well with this hitch. Great review. Thanks.

How does the pin box react when the ball is on the highest setting? My dealer set mine there and the connection oriented like yours - now I’m gonna go check as I didn’t notice contact at 90… (2021 gas 7.3 F250, 6’ 9” bed, crew cab)

Thanks, Matthew. I do have better pin box clearance at the highest setting. However, in that position my camper does not travel parallel to the ground. The front section rides a little high. Sometimes you need that full 90 degree. Sometimes you need a little better than a jacknife position. Whats the purpose of a fith wheel if you can't utilize a 90 degree jacknife? Useless in my opinion. Give me atleast that 90 degree, or nothing. Nice video presentation though.

What is the process to remove the hitch? Do you have to loosen the 3 bolts you torqued in the beginning of the video? Or just remove the pin on the ball in the bed? Thanks. Great video. I currently have a bumper pull travel trailer and use the Anderson weight distribution hitch, and I love it for the same reasons as your hitch…light weight and simple.
@TodayisanAdventureDay
Жыл бұрын
To remove it, you first unlock the fifth wheel trailer, then loosen the three torque bolts (first the two on the side that just provide extra support and then the top one to loosen from the gooseneck ball), then pull the pin that holds the hitch onto the gooseneck ball, then lift it off and store away. I also remove the gooseneck ball at that point so that my truck bed is completely clear. The whole process just takes a few minutes.

All of a sudden the sleeve popped. The torque bolt stripped out the threads in the sleeve.. I called Andersen and they replaced the whole unit. I noticed on the top where the torque bold goes through the flat plate also started defecting. I love the hitch but a little scared of it failing. Has anyone ever had this problem?

5 жыл бұрын
@@TodayisanAdventureDay. We have done a ton of online and KZitem research. It looks like a 35 foot to 37 foot would be perfect for my wife and I. Our favorites are the Grand Design Solitude (310GK or 344GK), Keystone Montana (3120RL) or Keystone Montana High Country (330RL). We need to travel to Eugene Oregon (90 minutes away) where all of these are in stock and devote most of a day to really settle on which we like the most. I do best when I san live with information for a while and chew on it, so I hope to do that in the next week or two. We'd like to be ready to make some decisions when we have a buyer for our place. Our current plan is to sell the 5th wheel after the house is built, but I have a feeling that we may enjoy it too much to sell it We have had an Arctic Fox camper for the past 10 years (since we often pull a boat or an ATV trailer), but I think the 5th wheel will spoil us. :)

Those are great fifth-wheel options. Although we really like our Montana High Country 305RL, we actually prefer the 330RL because the main windows are on the other side. I think that is a great unit. Thank you for the question! First of all, everyone should do their own research in order to make a final decision. I am not in authority, just an avid user of the product. @TodayisanAdventureDay
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Chris. Glad you liked the video. Yes, I could raise the ball one notch and it would keep the pin from hitting. The only reason I have not done that is that I want the camper to travel parallel to the ground. Raising the ball up a notch would cause the trailer to ride a little high in the front. There is always a trade-off one thing for another. Best wishes and happy camping!

Great video. Would using a higher position on the Anderson hitch ball give more clearance and result in pin box not being close to hitting the bed or rails?
@TodayisanAdventureDay
Жыл бұрын
Yes, Sean. You are absolutely correct. There are three positions and we used the middle position for the ball at the top of the pyramid. The reason we left it in the middle position was to maintain a level trailer while traveling. Raising to the top ball position would gain us the extra bed clearance but would cause the front of the camper to be pitched up which we didn't like. It is just a tradeoff and personal preference.

Would going with the extended height version give your pin box more clearance?
@TodayisanAdventureDay
Жыл бұрын
You can always raise the hitch point at the top of the pyramid. I use mine on the middle setting so that the camper rides level. I could raise it a notch to give me more bed clearance and therefore a tighter turning radius, but I chose to keep the camper level. I still have ample turning radius - I just need to be aware when backing into a tight corner. No matter how tight I turn driving forward, I’m completely fine.

what is the pin box you referred to and how do you know when you are in danger of damaging your truck box?
@TodayisanAdventureDay
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Tom. The pin box is the front hitch assembly on the fifth wheel trailer. It would include the metal cylinder knob that comes down along with the large metal rectangular box that supports it. The backside of that box can come close to the side rails of your truck when turning a sharp corner. That is what you need to watch regarding the pin box contacting the truck. I hope that helps! Safe travels and happy camping.

We had a travel trailer for several years, and this fall decided to upgrade to a new fifth-wheel. My tow vehicle is a 2018 Ford F-250 PowerStroke, and we purchased the Andersen Ultimate 5th Wheel hitch from our 5th wheel dealer. We’ve only used it two times, but so far we like it just fine. Very smooth on the road, easy to maneuver, and for sure, the light weight and ease of installing and removing are a big plus. I know there are many great 5th wheel hitches out there, but for us, the Andersen hitch fits our set up perfectly. Thanks for the great video!

In my search for a 5th wheel receiver, I'm noticing that they are made specific for certain trucks. My question then is if you use top mounted bed rails that are universal, then isn't it a moot point?
@TodayisanAdventureDay
Жыл бұрын
The bed rails shouldn't come into play with the clearance of the hitch. There are some height adjustments that allow you to raise the camper up out of the bed a little higher if you need more space above the bed rails.

We've had the Anderson hitch for about six months. It was recommended by the rv dealer where we purchased our outdoors rv travel trailer. I've towed six times so far and really love the hitch. Install and removal is a breeze and when not in use the hitch stores in the front compartment of the trailer. I'm glad I took the dealer's advice and went with the anderson over a slider. The truck it is installed in is a 2017 3/4 ton Ram with a 6 ft. 4 in bed and I have had 0 problems with turning radious.

Fantastic teacher very simple and to the point...Love it. I too have an Anderson hitch I allowed the mechanic to install and I forgot how to remove so this was fantastic. I did have to raise my ball to the top setting it did touch my side rails but did very little damage thank God! Only an expert would see it. The ride is far better than any hitch system. Check Craigslist because a used one is as low as $200 where new is 1K and they last forever.

Great review. Been wanting to get away from my B&W hitch due to the weight and the amount of space it takes in the bed. It is also not that easy to take in and out if and when I want to use my truck as a pickup.

You should have no trouble getting a cooler in front of the hitch. I have a rolling bed cover that takes up some room plus I keep a couple of boxes of emergency supplies in front of the hitch. I wish I could include a photo in this response.

What brand/type of tonneau cover are you using & how wide are the side rails for it? Do the side rails play any role in your sweet spot for turning?
@TodayisanAdventureDay
4 жыл бұрын
The brand is Retrax, and I really like it. It was more expensive than other bed covers I've had on previous trucks, but it is very heavy duty and I like how it rolls up. You can lock it in any position as well. The rails are not an issue. They probably stick up an inch or so.

I Love the Video...We are full time and want to go with the Anderson just for the light weight....I Have a question though. I have a 2021 F350 short bed and from the bed to the top of the side rails it measure 21.5 inches. I have narrowed it down to two Anderson Models...The Ultimate (3220) and the raised Ultimate (3217) which is almost 2" taller. Yours looks like it has plenty of bed clearance. #1 Which model do you have?...#2 what is the measurement from the bed of your truck to the top of the rail? Thank You in advance! Scott
@TodayisanAdventureDay
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! The SKU that we have is 3220. That is the standard ultimate gooseneck hitch. We have loved it and will definitely make that decision again. As far as the bed measurements, I have a 2019 F350 short bed as well. Our measurements would be identical.

Why not raise the ball another point so it wont hit the side of bed?
@TodayisanAdventureDay

I certainly could do that, and it is a good suggestion. However, I do not want to raise that ball any higher because then the camper will not travel in a level position.

Could you tell me if I have to grease this fifth wheel at all?
@TodayisanAdventureDay

You do not need any grease for this type of hitch. It is maintenance free other than making sure the bolts stay at the correct attention. I have not had any issue with the bolts loosening, but it is something that should be checked regularly.

What a joke. This can't be serious. You've got a dropped in Puck system in the back of that bed and you're trying to convince me that somehow this is easier then just getting the proper fifth wheel and using the quick release Puck system.😅🤣😂🤣😅 Not to mention pulling a high-profile top-heavy trailer with a gooseneck is far more dangerous than using the factory fifth wheel. That's why semis use fifth wheels because they're safer. Goosenecks are more vulnerable to rollover and high winds because of the nature a gooseneck type hitches. That also goes for all of the fools that pay extra money for fifth wheel hitches that pivot sideways. There is no need for them to put it sideways. They are engineered with a certain amount of play so they have sideways movement

What did you install into the bed of your truck that the gooseneck ball inserts into?
@TodayisanAdventureDay
2 жыл бұрын
Our truck came with a B&W receiver that was already installed. I then purchased a hitch ball (which is about the size of a soda can with a hitch ball on top) that drops down into that metal ring/hole in the middle of the bed. The Andersen hitch then fits over the top of that ball. Good luck!

My concern is the 4 set screws holding the red piece against the pin box? Maybe I don't completely understand.
@TodayisanAdventureDay
3 жыл бұрын
From what I can tell and understand, the weight and pressure is carried by the kingpin and the red coupler box. The four set screws just hold it in position.
@MrTimeforchangenow

I guess that is what concerns me. If they came loose or broke the red coupler box could spin. It must work fine if you’ve been using it for a year.

Great review as I have been searching for a hitch that is easy to remove and get my truck bed back but at the same time allows me to turn into tight locations. Particularly my own driveway which is one of my tightness turns. I have an Air Ride pin box with a Pullright slider. That pull-right is a back breaker and although a nice piece of equipment it is extremely heavy and needs my forklift to get it out of the truck. I like to be able to spend about 10 minutes removing the Anderson hitch and doesn't break my back and give me my truck bed back. Well done review and thank you.

The Anderson, Reese goose box, and gen-y torsion hitch are the three we are considering if we buy a 5th wheel this summer. Of the three the Anderson is the only hitch the other two are obviously pin boxes but they all three give you the bed of your truck each with their own set of advantages and disadvantages.
