Excellent fight it would have been, definitely a decision. I agree with what ya'll say. Big fan of both, Calzaghe especially. So I might be bias. Both are underrated. I will say I think it depends on the judges tbh. If they liked Ward's tactical approach and cleaner punches, he could get the nod. But personally Calzaghe's engine as has been said, his work rate, character and ability to adapt to a style in front of him would find a way to get the rounds needed for the win. Only thing I say I'd perhaps disagree with is I think Calzaghe would actually come on strong as the fight went on and take the last few rounds.

Froch was a brilliant fighter but his place in the sport is next to the likes of Eubank and benn.great fighters but they were still never considered the best on the planet at their weight in their generation. Ward was and so was joe clazghe. Froch should man up and accept he just wasnt as good as either of them. Ive seen interviews with both benn and eubank where both said at their peaks they think joe would have been too much for them. Its about time froch stopped lying to people.

Just my opinion, but Ward always sounds like one of those presidential candidate political campaign managers, always on TV spinning everything in favor of their candidate, or in this case, himself. Ward never legitimately beat Kovalev. In the rematch Kovalev took the fight to him and beat him down with body shots, got too comfortable as Ward got desperate from the fatigue, got caught and hurt, then Ward tried to finish him, failed and punched himself out, then looked for a way out of the fight with three low blows before Kovalev could recover between rounds and come back to knock out a worn down, exhausted, punched-out Ward. Ward is one of the smartest boxers alive. IMO he knew what he was doing. IMO he found a clever way out of the fight and got awarded the hometown win by a biased or corrupt ref. Nothing we haven't seen before. Ward basically did what Andrew Golota did against Bowe after he also gassed out unable to finish a hurt but iron chinned Bowe, but Ward was cleverer about it, and Ward was an American on American soil as opposed to Golota being Polish, so the ref rewarded him instead of DQing him like Golota.
@punchforpound2808
5 жыл бұрын
@Herb Dee I had Ward winning the first fight, but to me Ward quit in the rematch. How you can say Kovalev quit when he never went down, not even after 3 huge shots to the balls when he was already hurt, is almost disrespectful to me to a great fighter. I've seen Floyd, BHop, and many other great fighters go down from just one low blow and then roll on the floor in animated pain. Overdramatic, yes, but I guess smart because calling such attention to it is how you make sure the ref stops it from happening again. Kovalev tried to call attention to it many times, but he actually stayed tough and never went down, and the hometown ref used this against him to just stand by and let Ward keep fouling him. If Kovalev had at least gone down from the low blows, it would have put the ref to a choice to enforce the rules, or expose himself calling a knockdown on low blows. But Kovalev never went down at all, so I don't even know what you're talking about honestly. When you're exhausted and you punch yourself out, but then you throw 3 low blows, that's YOU who at least wants a rest, if not a way out of the fight. If anyone quit it was Ward.
@punchforpound2808
5 жыл бұрын
@Herb Dee I agree two great fighters, and I agree their rivalry ended with no clear outcome. Ward would tell you different though, and that's what my comment was about. My interpretation of the fight is just as plausible as people saying "yeah it was stopped too early but even without the low blows Ward would have stopped him anyway." OK then why didn't he? Why throw low blows at a hurt opponent if you still have gas in the tank to stop them? Maybe because even after Ward hurt him, he hit him with handfuls of body shots and head shots, and he still couldn't get rid of him. Ward isn't a huge puncher. Hell, even _with_ the three low blows, he still couldn't drop Kovalev. So if he couldn't stop Kovalev with three shots to the nuts, how many more shots to the body or head do you think it would have taken to drop Kovalev? 5? 10? And how do you know Ward still had stamina left to throw 5-10 more power punches right then and there after already throwing a bunch that round? Do you see what Im saying? It's just as possible that he wouldn't have been able to do it and that fatigue was the reason for it. He looked exhausted in the corner on the stool ever since the 5th round. He stopped throwing many punches until he got Kovalev hurt, and he came out super dirty, even by his standards, in the 7th and 8th rounds, as if he was desperate. The right hand Ward hurt Kovalev with came after Ward basically walked through a Kovalev jab with his eyes closed right into the danger zone and attacked recklessly. Ward gave up his own chin to go at Kovalev's, kamikaze style, as if he was desperate and knew he was running out of the time, as if he was extremely fatigued. Then 20 seconds later after throwing like 20 more power punches, he goes low, as if he needs the ref to stop action and warn him so he can get a break. There were so many different signs that Ward was on his last lags that it's impossible to say with certainty he would have stopped Kovalev without the low blows, and that he would have been able to last the 12 rounds with Kovalev if he didn't stop Kovalev. That means there's more than a small chance Kovalev would have come back to stop Ward. That's why I say the outcome to their rivalry is completely inconclusive. If Ward would admit that as well, then no one would be arguing about it, but he refuses to admit it, and acts like he definitively beat Kovalev. I simply disagree. The Joshua-Klitschko fight, the Kovalev-Yarde fight, many other fights, as well as Ward's behavior in the Kovalev rematch, all show us that we cannot say with any certainty at all that Ward would have won that rematch without the low blows. It will forever be an unknown.
