If you're looking for the next timeless classic, look no further : cello's hottest new hit is SEVEN.
New-York based composer Andrea Casarrubios has gone all out : C-string scordatura, heartrending harmonies, old flamenco singing, searing pain and a feverish middle section that makes your arm want to fall off. All that and a finale that answers the question "is the cello the saddest instrument?". Well yes.
Anyways, from Casarrubios' own words : "SEVEN is a tribute to the essential workers during the global COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to those who lost lives. Written in Manhattan, the piece ends with seven bell-like sounds, alluding to New York's daily 7 PM tribute during the lockdown, the moment when New Yorkers clapped from their windows, connecting with each other and expressing appreciation for those on the front lines"
