📌Andrei Rublev “The Trinity”📌
The color of the whole painting is yellow, which gives a bright and warm feeling.
This indicates that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are a community of warm love.
When the rim is connected around the cup in the center, a large circle is drawn, symbolizing the perfect love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The same size, face, head, wings, and halo of the three persons indicate that the inner essence of the three persons is one.
All three persons are wearing sky-blue clothes that symbolize 'the divine nature'.
The Father is wearing a golden mantle symbolizing 'glory and power'.
The fact that the blue light is transparent outside the outerwear means that he is a person who emits light on his own, not outside light.
The Son is wearing an azure mantle, which means 'God revealed outside'.
The red clothes on the inside signify ‘being sacrificed as a human being’.
The golden belt on the shoulder signifies that ‘Christ alone is our high priest’.
The Holy Spirit wears a green mantle symbolizing 'life and hope'.
The staff of the Holy Spirit is tilted in an oblique line, and the oblique line implies ‘movement’ and means ‘active at this moment’.
The trinity icon naturally draws our attention to the Son in the middle.
And, our eyes move to the Father who the Son looks at, and then to the Holy Spirit who the Father looks at.
In other words, we know the Father through the Son, and the Father leads the Church through the Holy Spirit. This symbolizes the ‘personal cycle’.
The hand shape of the Son is the traditional ‘blessing hand’ of Christianity.
The cup blessed by the Son's hand contains the ‘ox's head’, an Old Testament sacrifice.
The table with the cup symbolizes the ‘altar’ where the sacrifice is performed.
When the bodies of the Father and the Holy Spirit are connected with lines, the ‘hidden cup’ is revealed, and the Son is contained in the cup.
It indicates that the Son became a sacrifice for human salvation, and means the 'Eucharist' of sharing the body and blood of Christ.
The Father extends his hand in blessing to the Son and encourages the Son to drink the sacrificial cup.
The Holy Spirit points to the square under the table, which means 'the created world' and symbolizes the 'narrow gate' to enter the kingdom of God.
The ‘house’ behind the Holy Father symbolizes the ‘father’s house’ to which we must return.
The 'tree' behind the Son is the 'oak of Mamre' that gives life and becomes a type of the cross of Jesus Christ.
The ‘rock’ behind the Holy Spirit symbolizes ‘Gethsemane’, where Jesus prayed, and means that a solid foundation of faith is completed when the Holy Spirit is with us.
The biggest feature of the ‘Trinity’ icon is that it ignores perspective.
The general perspective is to draw larger as you get closer and smaller as you get farther away.
However, when looking at the scaffolding, a ‘reverse perspective’ was used, which drew a larger view of the far back than the near front.
This expresses God's point of view, and it is 'seeing with the eyes of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit' in the painting, not my eyes.
The Trinity icon is the most Russian-like icon and the most loved by Russians.
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the holy Spirit be with all of you.” (2 Corinthians 13,13)
