I was at college in the late '90s too -- Sussex of all places, home of Woke. I got a 2:1 for arguing against the supporters of Said and the French loons. Lucky for me I could find some use for Derrida and Barthes, I suppose. Funny thing is that at Sussex, the old Marxists who set up the place a few decades prior were warning us about the lunacy of post-structuralism and post-modernism ('the metanarrative that denies the existence of metanarratives,' as Cedric Watts once wrote to me).

Ah, Nick, I do love your political podcasts, but I must admit (talking of getting back to art), I so miss your stand-up. I’m so disappointed you gave it up before I got to that part of the world to see you live. My solace is watching your sets on KZitem over and over again, so that I can recall many of the events you describe, and, when I’m pissed and telling stories, passing them off as my own. 🤣. Keep up the good work, mate, and one day those f..kers at the BBC will pay you the money they owe you. (But don’t hold your breath). One day, when I get over there, I’ll buy you lunch. Also great to hear from Andrew. His comment about the crab in a bucket is one I’ll long remember, and must use.

Great place to come for calm, sensible analysis (from calm & sensible people.) Reading between the lines & taking the hints being put out, it sounds as if Starmer may have 2 partners (both women) & 2 families in 2 separate locations. The Westminster rumour mill is a bit like in Astronomy - when something can't be detected directly, but you know there's something there because of its influence on all the stuff around it which can be seen.)

The discussion about art and creativity and the attack it can come under from any side in any era (and how to respond) was very enlightening and worth more time from both. Much more productive than moving on to discuss party politics.

I'm glad Doyle addressed the 'fire in a crowded theatre' standard, as I've long thought that freedom does mean responsibility & whilst 'reckless endangerment' is still a thing & I do think speech has limits in terms of slander & even fighting words but both are somewhat context dependent, (the sh!t we say to our friends...), & shouting fire in a crowded theatre seems a risky act that is on the line of legality but not across it but could be deemed the latter subject to the consequences. If everyone ignores you, then nothing, if a parent is angry at your potentially endangering their child[ren] then it seems a reasonable fighting words scenario & if there ends up being a stampede or crush in which persons are harmed or property damaged then it seems reasonable you be held somewhat liable.

You must get asked this a lot, but have you never thought of setting up a center-right political party? There is an amazing group of common sense commentators currently. If you organised and pulled together as a political force, we could stop the decline.

It's rare that I listen to these political podcasts more than once but this one definitely deserved a second listen. I know you've just gone through a bit of a podcast divorce and you're probably not looking for another double act but you've found a great sparring partner there with Andrew and I hope he becomes a regular guest on The Current Thing. I particularly liked the discussion on the state of art at the moment. Fine art is particularly under attack at the moment. There used to be the odd public gallery that you could rely on to exhibit and sell work through but most of these have now all been taken over and they're only interested in promoting work that explicitly pushes the message or truly awful abstract art (because obviously it's not as problematic for them as representational art). So unless you're producing either of those then don't waste your time trying to exhibit - unfortunately however, if you're not exhibiting then chances are you're not selling, so you're pretty much demonetised. But please, please, please tell Andrew, this world needs The Bad Art book!! We've had decades of art publications and art theory pushing shit like piss Christ and piss flowers (Helen Chadwick) as masterpieces but never a book that sets the record straight, so please could you recommend this little project to Andrew. Anyways, keep up the good work.

It is risible when any one of the MSM or film companies is making a costume drama these days, they wiĺl go to the nth degree to make sure the scenes, the costumes, the hair styles, the dialogue, everthing is absolutely true to whichever historical period they are setting the drama in, and then go and completely spoil the illusion with incorrect casting (a black actress playing Anne Boleyn for example!). Why bother going to the great expense and inconvenience of making everything else completely accurate and then spoiling the illusion anyway? I just can't bear to watch them.

Ironically Kemi Badenoch is literally an anchor baby. Her mother deliberately travelled to Britain while pregnant in order to take advantage of birthplace citizenship. Once Kemi was born they promptly returned home to Nigeria.

There is no prospect of a Tory/Reform merger. Both parties need to spend the next three years trying to position themselves as the dominant right wing party. If however we are a year out from an election and the right are split with Reform in the teens or twenties I think some sort of a seat pact is something they will need to consider.

I would love to believe Badenoch is genuine, but I am highly suspicious. If we are going to defeat Woke, which is a very dangerous and divisive and destructive cult, you don't keep giving it highly symbolic victories through your own standard bearers.
