you could have been a bit more generous level matching. i can clearly hear 2db difference which makes it harder to hear the tonal difference

You're right, the examples aren't matched that well. But hopefully you can still hear the tonal changes and it's not just a case of louder is better.

Slapping an EQ and boosting the low end isn't really a "trick" no matter how fancy your EQ is...

This trick is just a simple EQ process

Nice one! I tried applying this separately: 100hz setting for rack tom and 60hz setting for floor tom, and it works wonders!!!

are we really comparing eq-ed signals that are 4 db louder to un eq-ed in 2022? especially when there´s a gain knob on both plug ins. 🤦♂️ i think a little added putec attenuation would have probably sounded good on those toms too.

Super intricate trick up your sleeves Joe.. Do you think this should be accompanied with a limiter/clipper ? Coz Toms are those elements you can never have enough ?
@GreenLightSound
2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, especially if the tom hits are really "spikey" in terms of transients. Then you can really turn them up without clipping the DAW channel.

When adding those frequencies, what about other elements occuping those parts of the spectrum?

The tom hits are often so infrequent that they won't interfere.

Pultec style equalizers have a very distinct character/curve, and a different add+subtract "algorythm" that creates very subtle but noticeable changes. Lots of character and bass depth, with no dramatic eq/fq changes.

I would say for the rack tom there is no low frequencies needed too much.

Probably not, but it's faster to just work on them together.

You should mention that the amount of boost is dependent on the music you are mixing. One can not "copy" these settings? One has to do this when listening to the whole track. Just sayin'

Little bit of level matching, and the eq made it darker and heavier... before that it was more snappy and bright. Can't say which one's better tho without context...but what's special about the pultec?
@realraven2000

I think normally it's using boost plus attenuation to generate a pleasant curve. wiuld be interesting to see in plugin doctor to see if you could match it with a fabfilter Q3

I wouldn’t really say it’s a trick more just a process?
