It was a terrible performance and tough to watch as a Murray fan… but people calling on him to retire need to get a grip. He’s still in the top 50 best players in the world and people are saying he’s not good enough. He’s never going to be as good or as consistent as he was when he was at the top of the game - but he still has something to offer the tour. If he stops enjoying it, fine. But if he’s happy working hard, let him play for as long as he wants.

It's a sad way to go out really. Ever since that hip injury it just feels like it's been one long miserable road to when he eventually retires. It's a shame because it feels like it stole a good few years off his career. Not saying he would have won loads. But he definitely could have picked up a few good titles along the way, even a major or two if he was lucky. It would have been a happier end to what has been a really good career. Now it just feels like all people will remember is his last few years on the tour, when we should be remembering all the years before that.

Maybe I’m pointing out the obvious here but I think some people are downplaying the effects of age here (perhaps it’s people’s hope and delusion, nothing wrong with that I suppose). At the end of the day Murray is 36, I’m a little older and while I don’t have an ounce of talent that Murray has, I can be sure is he will be feeling every bit of his age particularly when playing someone much younger. I’m relatively fit and have siblings who are 10 years younger than me. Where I sometimes can beat them in strength, I am no match when it comes to speed and don’t even get me started on recovery lol. As you get older you lose speed, sharpness and recovery takes longer especially after a long workout. You can see the aging effects on in both how Djokovic and Nadal play - especially Djokovic, compared to 5 years and or even 2/3 years ago, he is no whereas sharp and that is normal. Yes Djokovic is still performing a high level but some of that is down to talent (having a better serve and forehand than Murray for example) and adapting his style of play. People who think Djokovic will beating all these young’uns at 40 to win grand slams are either under 30 or older and forgotten what it feels like when you turn 40 and your body reminds you on a regular basis you are not young no more lol. Now if we add in other elements such as injuries, surgery, time off the tour, match fitness - I don’t think there is anything surprising about Murray current performance in fact I think he has exceeded expectations in that respect. While I’m not the biggest Murray fan it is certainly very inspirational what he has managed to achieve since the surgery and I’m sure when he retires and look back he will see he has had a career that he should be extremely proud of and that most would envy.

Over the past 8 months, there have been instances where Murray's temper has escalated to the point of verbal abuse towards himself and his team. Additionally, he has been seen smashing his racket and expressing anger in a manner that can be perceived as deranged.
